Co-Op Mutation #379: By Fire Be Purged

Flames engulf the battlefield both from above and below. Every inch outside your base is a maze of fire that must be trudged in order to destroy the enemy trains.

Going Nuclear - Nukes are launched at random throughout the map.
Lava Burst - Lava periodically burst from the ground at random locations and deals damage to player air and ground units.
Scorched Earth - Enemy units set the terrain on fire upon death.

Notes:

  • The warning spot for Going Nuclear is the large targeting area. However, you only have 5 Blizzard seconds of warning before the nuke hits.
  • The Lava Bursts appear all around your bases, but not in the mineral line. It is probably wise to build your expansion on-location.
  • Lava Bursts hit air units, like in Vermillion Problem.
  • The size of scorched earth depends on the supply count of the unit killed.
  • Air units are immune to Scorched Earth.

1st clear Mengsk P1+Nova P1

Mutation (By Fire Be Purged) play list.

#193 By Fire Be Purged – SOLO ALL CLEAR

Mutators: Going Nuclear, Lava Burst, Scorched Earth

An easy mutation. Air units are better here because they can fly away from nukes. They also aren’t affected by Scorched Earth.

This won’t be the last OE mutation with Going Nuclear. Here are some spots to beware of: Left edges of the main area, player 1’s (left main) left gas and minerals, player 2’s (right main) ramp, left expo’s left gas, right expo’s lower gas

Cleared it twice as Mengsk P1. You just need a good partner to handle the early game like Tychus or H&H. Be sure to place your ESOs a bit further back than normal because the Nukes will reach them if they’re near the cliffs. Don’t forget to station a couple of bunkers near the guns as well in case any stray air units decide to attack them.

On another note, it’s either I kept forgetting to upgrade the ESO range in my previous games but did the range upgrade get buffed? I’m able to bombard their west base almost halfway from our base now. I remember ESO range reaching only up to the base exits when upgraded.

All I can recall off the top of my head is the range goes from 50 to 75 after that aiblity upgrade.

This mutation requires air superiority, fast-movers that evades nukes and lava bursts, and long range attacks. Recommended commanders:

  • Raynor P3
  • Swann P1
  • Alarak P3
  • HH P2
  • Karax P3
  • Artanis P3
  • Fenix P2
  • Stetmann P3
  • Mengsk P1
  • Zagara P1
  • Stukov P1

I wanted to speed level a lvl 1 Zagara so I found someone to essentially carry me for the mutation. My ally went with Mengsk.

It was impressive. Our little central island became carpeted in ESOs. And with them, my ally wrecked everything including the bonuses. I think the only time my ally even ventured out was to set up their expo.

We got an Zerg air comp, so my primary contribution was massing scourge to finish off the trains’ escorts (and the flying portion of the attack waves). And even that wasn’t hard because my ally would use contaminated strike on the remaining air units just before I flew my scourge in.

Karax P2 + Mengsk P1 - WIN vs. air Zerg comp

I used SoA lasers to deal with air units from time to time. Ally was quite proficient vs. trains. Helped out with Zealots, Immortals, and alter on, air units (Mirages and Carriers) vs. Guards, Devourers, and Mutas.

Won first try with Artanis p0 and play this map normally with protoss mech (dragoon/immortal/reaver). Ally was Tychus. Got two bonus trains too without issue. Nikara helped a lot and shield overcharge allowed me to ignore the flames from time to time. Enemy was terran but we both know to build turrets on the ramps so no issue even with the additional nuclear launches.

You just need high dps to kill the trains on this map (I dealt 2/3 of the damage overall and we didn’t need to chase any of the trains). A few sacrificial zealots can help containing the fire away from the death ball.

As this is an easy mission to begin with the fires added challenge, but managable. Commanders with large number of low HP units can be in trouble however.

I was Stukov P1, ally was Tychus, he told me he’d deal with the waves, and I just would deal with the trains, so I went mass tank with both upgrades, and set them around my base, the nukes weren’t a problem, and the lava bursts were cumbersome to my volatile infested, but we won in the end.
