Co-Op Mutation #329: Attrition Warfare

Sgt. Hammer’s surveillance team has reported that the area around her fortress is a mine field, so you begin landing before your engineers have finished calibrating your weapons for safe operation on Char’s hot surface. This results in your weapons malfunctioning and damaging their owners as they take down the enemy. Destroy the Void Thrashers to buy yourself more time to properly calibrate your weapons.

Diffusion - Damage dealt to enemies is split evenly across all nearby units, including your own.
Minesweeper - Groups of Widow Mines and Spider Mines are buried throughout the battlefield.

Notes:

  • Diffusion affects units within 5 range of the enemy damaged.
  • Only damage dealt to Amon’s forces [instead of to your own forces, or to the rocks] is reflected.
  • Widowmines and Spidermines spawn in randomized spots all around the map at the beginning of the mission.
  • Diffiusion affects your buildings also.
  • Artanis’ Guardian Shell and Karax’s unity barrier are literal life-savers for mines.
  • Observers’ and Overseers’ surveillance mode and scanner sweep are helpful for seeing mines.

#143 Attrition Warfare – SOLO ALL CLEAR

Mutators: Minesweeper, Diffusion

Diffusion makes fights last a bit longer and dangerous. Use ranged units and kite enemy melee units. If you must fight melee vs melee, you’ll need a lot more units than usual to win the fight. I think it’s better to spend minerals on static D than units like zerglings and zealots.

Minesweeper slows this quick mission dramatically. Be careful with your detectors as you clear mines because losing a detector might set you back a minute. How do you be careful? Don’t get close to a widow mine, and don’t get in diffusion range. The good thing about diffusion is that once you’re in range of a mine, you’ll damage the others near it. Be careful when expanding because there might be a mine field near the rocks.

Because of minesweeper, it’s better to go around the sides of the map (where there are no mines) and snipe the thrashers from the back. Take good care of your detector and make a few extra just in case.

Mines huh. Time to send in a very expendable horde of minesweepers.

This time done in 1st attempt. Stukov P3 with random Nova P3. Just like a no mutator. Widow mines in expansion really anoying.

Artanis p0 + Tychus p1
Mass dragoons + observers with speed upgrade are perfect combo for this mutation

Mission didn’t fill much slower, we just brutforced through

P1 Zeratul (EU)
P3 Artanis (US)

Is anyone else having an issue of being paired with single digit levelers?(Mostly Raynors * rollseyes*) This has happening to me quite a bit and kinda annoying.

First time logging on for more than 2 weeks (missed last 2 mutations even though I wanted to do them).

1st attempt: after a warm up game I went into this mutation as P1 Alarak. Didn’t play particularly well but I played well enough IF my ally had done anything other than suicide P3 Mengsk troopers into mines. Lost on the last set of thrashers. Alarak is a real liability on this mutation, almost better to leave him at home except that his destruction wave is so nice.

2nd attempt: Tychus P3 which I normally don’t play but thought I’d give it a go. Ally was P1 Zagara and I suggested at the beginning of the game that it was the wrong prestige for this mutation but they seemed confident. Would have won this IF I hadn’t gone for the second optional despite how atrociously P1 Zagara performs on this map. On the last set of Thrashers I had cleared one side when we lost. My ally commented “I chose the wrong prestige” and with that admittance of fault I invited them to party for a retry.

3rd attempt: Tychus P3 (despite my feeling I would have done better with P2 even on this mutation) with Nova P3 team mate. Easy.

2 weeks until I’m in my home country. Hoping to be able to set up my monitor and keyboard again soon.

Similarly to what someone said above, ran this one as a P3 Stukov with a P3 Nova ally. Between Nova’s massive detection radius, and Stukov’s throw away units, this mutation wasn’t bad at all.

After we cleared the first area, my ally went to work on the 2nd area while I simultaneously started working on the 3rd area.

When my ally cleared the 2nd area’s defenders, I diverted to help with the thrashers. Then we finished up the 3rd area.

A nuke dropped in the 4th area essentially cleared most of the mines, and Nova’s detection revealed any left overs. Got the bonus without much issue.

It was a good commander combo. It made it fairly easy.

Dit it as Tychus P3 with a Stukov P3 ally, although my ally struggled a lot we won quite easily first try.
Slightly different build order for Tychus, so I could get Nikara with detection asap. Her heal was quite useful for diffusion and the occasional mine, that got through. They hit hard. Didn’t really feel like a mutation at all, though, relatively easy one.

Just want to warn… damage to the rocks does harm your units, so be careful.

Yeah the amount of times I’ve set dropped a bunker next to the rocks without thinking .

As already mentioned by others, this note from the main message is not correct

  • Only damage dealt to Amon’s forces [instead of to your own forces, or to the rocks] is reflected.

Rocks have been changed to hostile quite some time ago and since then they do reflect/diffuse damage back to your units.

Done as P3 Karax (Mirages) with a P0 Artanis ally with Dragoons.

One of those rare mutations I would actually play in Hard.
Played Stukov P3, with an ally Artanis P1 in Normal.

Good ally that brought observers around and launched a few units in battle in the middle of the flow of my infested.
He wasn’t concentrating on the offensive (no Tempests, Reavers, HTs or Archons), but was doing good things with the observers and some orbital attacks, Can do better, but definitely far above the average.

Masses of infested along with calldowns eventually erased Amon forces, including his Archangel…but not the base behind the final one, I wasn’t in the right configuration to play around at dealing with it.

If you ask for help I’m sure there’s plenty who’d give you hand to knock out on Brutal. Mengsk P1 makes this practically a non-mutation.

Why waste time on destroying that base anyway?

Maybe he meant partially? You can sneak in the back there with cloaked units by taking out a few detectors within that 2nd portion base (as well as presumably taken out the fewer detectors within final base already).

I see and use this more or less with HH’s A-Wraiths. You can also do it with Swann, especially now that the movement speed is changed.

But that’s a big stretch on my part :joy:

Like the climbers say about why they climb the mountain: “Because it’s here!”

As a climber I can tell you that I don’t destroy bases in sc2 coop unless there is some purpose.
