Co-Op Mutation #243: Spear of Your Doom

Phase-smiths under Amon’s thrall have constructed a new arkship to rain destruction upon the Dark God’s foes from orbit. Withstand the onslaught, and seize the locks.

Orbital Strike - Enemy Orbital Strikes are periodically fired throughout the map.
Temporal Field - Enemy Temporal Fields are periodically deployed throughout the map.
Purifier Beam - An enemy Purifier Beam moves across the map toward nearby player units.

Notes:

  • The Purifier Beam is permanent for Amon, and spawns at the start of the map. It slowly chases your units, and also [your static defense on the locks].
  • Amon has [A LOT] of Orbital Strikes.
  • A new Purifier Beam spawns on Brutal at 10:30, and it attacks your expansion if you put buildings out too far.
  • Time stop will cause the enemy to start sending units to the locks non-stop. Do NOT use time stop unless you want to make life harder, or if you’re capturing the last lock.
  • Mind control does NOT work on Purifier Beams.
  • Artanis’ Guardian Shell in particular saved my Marines from the Orbital Strikes. He would be a great ally for Raynor or Kerrigan.
  • Vorazun’s Dark Pylon recall does not work on units trapped in Temporal Fields.
  • If Zagara’s units can kill the lock defenders fast enough, the Orbital Strikes/Purifier Beam will not be much of a problem. The Temporal Fields may prevent that though.
  • As is with normal Lock & Load, the enemy will not begin capturing a lock until you have zero units on the lock. When you’re on the verge of capturing the last lock, and your defenses on a particular lock have failed, you can just throw 1 unit to the lock to delay the enemy from capturing it. Overlords, Speedlings, Warp-ins, Drop pods, even MULEs may help with this, if only to delay the enemy by a few seconds.

Time to pick a Prestige CO at level 10 and get that sweet bonus XP.

Don’t enemies already do that? They send units to locks time to time anyways. Are you saying that they will send more units more frequently?

Thanks for the info @Swordier and @NoobIsHere

Anyways a super easy mutation this week already beaten them in two servers.

I believe enemies that are around the encampments will start going to the various locks in a steady stream. Since the enemy also happens to rebuild those units, unless you completely kill the enemy bases, they will keep sending units to all the locks. And since they’re normal units and not attack waves, you’ll have no indication until they start actually capturing the lock.

If you do a time stop super early, you could find that nearly every lock is now being captured at once early in the game, immediately putting you and your Ally on the back foot. And even if you do manage to push the enemies off the locks, they’ll be right there again as soon as your army leaves. And considering this mutation makes static defenses on each lock difficult, well…

I’ve had an ally doing a TS recently (in a standard brutal L&L) and after that we had lone marauders, firebats and else endlessly coming from each side base to reclaim the locks and, unlike the attack wave, they were not shown on the minimap. That and all the locks we did not have were taken soon after TS.

Beat it by Just teleporting swarm hosts around with Abathur’s P2

Sweet! Played it last night using level 10 p2 stetmann, saved me a lot of the levelling grind. Ally was p2 tychus, easy 14 min mostly hero solo run.

Did it, with Zagara as usual, with a Vorazun enemy (can’t call it ally, all teamwork from it was purely accidental).
Various trouble occurred:

  • The ally was an idiot creating random units and not really participating, but that always happen even out of mutations
  • The ally used Time Stop, so I could see what was mentioned in this topic, lots of attack waves suddenly appearing at the same time at several locations.
  • Amon Orbital Strikes (at least, but possibly more) have a “full map vision” cheat, so Overlords thrown at the bottom left of the screen, if they gather a big enough group, can get targeted.
  • Burying a zergling near a Lock until the ally come around doesn’t work as well as usual, due to the purifier beam aggroing it.

Well, now it’s done, no need to worry about it anymore.

Much more easier compared to last week. At least can complete brutation with tychus ally, me played Arty. But missed activate prestige during mission start countdown, else can skip 6 level grinding.

I can’t decide which commander should I play this so I have choosen random.

Did this one with Nova P3, ally was a level 10 P0 Tychus. I was actually surprised at how fast my support army got torn apart the moment I stopped watching them. Not that it matters, Nova defense drone plus tychus is GG. Fast nukes and occasional snipe made it even more so, even got the bonus.

As usual, P3 Nova cheese does wonders. Had an Raynor ally who scanned and sent bio when I cleared the locations. Had a bit of bad luck with the middle lock, but otherwise a very casual run on brutal.

Prestiges really made some mutations a walk in the park.

Pretty easy to beat it on Brutal. I beat it on my first try with my Lv.10 P0 Alarak with Raynor as my ally. Unfortunately, my ally left immediately as soon the game started. Probably because I’m level 10. Even though he left, I managed to win solo. Ahhh feel good to gain level 3x.

Played H&H with an Abathur lvl 10 ally and I am not sure that was the best choice, at least not as how I played it (lost cruiser and upgraded galleons to the orbital strike).

Still a relatively easy mutation, great to prestige trick and did bonus as well.

Play with a Tychus P2 as Artanis P2, with guardian shield as support and teleporting micro (a small amount of zealot and tempest) help allies clear an outpost.
Finished in 10m or less.

Nova + a drone can tank the beam until the drone expire.

Carried some dumb P0 Artanis through the Brutation plus bonus, as Alarak P3. Cleared everything, he only warped in some Dragoons and Zealots, and dared to spam-ping when a lock wasn’t under control yet, while I was moving to the next one.

He also used Solar Bombardment for two Carriers. At least the second one went into the bonus. Guardian Shell came in handy as well, I must say.

Mission was done at 18mins. I shiver at the thought of how long it would’ve taken if I waited for Artanis to be the one to push in to bases with his few Dragoons and Zealots. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Lock and Load was always a “time bomb” mission. If it takes too long, too many waves start to spawn. I’m glad it didn’t last over 20mins. The Orbital Strikes and Purifier Beams can be dangerous when you’re busy somewhere else on the map.

Amon sends units one by one to the locks anyway.

On a note unrelated to the average post in there, I think they should have called that mutation “Spear of A Doom”.
More syntax-broken, but pun more obvious.
