It doesn’t have much HP; it’s not very mobile; it doesn’t do much DPS, and it has 2 more range against ground units than a queen. The tempest has zero abilities/spells.
Despite this, it requires a fleet beacon and it costs 250/170 and takes up 5 supply.
Has anyone ever played SC 2 or watched SC 2? Infestors alone can absolutely annihilate every Toss composition in the game. Zero exaggeration.
A disruptor can nuke your army, over and over again. A cyclone has so much range and does so much damage that it’s absolutely pointless to even know what the stats are, because it’s freaking stupid. That’s all you need to remember. Never try to harass Terran and never try to out range it. That’s what liqupedia should read for its stats. Numbers are pointless.
This game is just chock full of “super hero units.” The liberator has been nerfed about 100 times, yet it’s still 100 times better than the tempest.
Like… this game is so dumb/random man. So many units are allowed to have so much potential. Endless ceiling. If everything is super charged, then it’s balanced… But… here we are with a tempest that’s not allowed to kill anything in the game, yet is supposed to be more expensive than nearly everything.
Take 200 queens vs 200 tempests on a micro map and see what happens and see how ridiculous it is. A tempest is nothing more than a flying probe with 13 range against air, but it can’t mine minerals and costs 275/175.
Can we explain/justify this unit at all? If not, could we, I dunno… make it better?
Personally, I would love to see the tempest just reverted to the more expensive but more durable version. At least then it could do it’s job: killing Brood Lords and liberators without requiring total air dominance. Now it requires more than total air dominance; it requires you to be ahead on tech by a landslide to function. Sure it’s cheaper, so that helps accomplish that, but still I think it was a better unit when it was 6 supply and tanky and a little slower.
I’ve never played this game when it wasn’t the clear cut worst unit in the game. The only ability I’ve ever used with it was some stun thingy that was there for like a month. It was super bad then.
It’s just so infuriating trying to make this unit and watching all these low tech units just absolutely crush it, in every single way possible. It’s like trying to make a 400/400 mothership that doesn’t have cloak. You’re just making a mothership for the meat shield and its DPS.
Wait a second… I just looked up the mothership’s DPS. THE MOTHERSHIP HAS 7 RANGE AND DOES 6 MORE DPS VS GROUND THAN THE TEMPEST.
Most people probably forget the mothership even does damage. Why on earth did they need to reduce the ground range of the tempest. This unit is so bad that I like making it just for the humor it brings me.
They just need to stop being stupid in regards to this unit. “This unit has 30 range! Yeah, ofc that’s impossible to balance, so we gave it 3 DPS!!!” Dumb. Make it a siege type of unit. Make it do reasonable damage like everything else in the game. Christ. And if it costs a million minerals and a million gas, having a spell/ability probably would make sense, too. Give me a break.
When they nerffed Tempest on the ground they planed to give as compensation the Dezintegration Blast but reverted to Stun (a 4 sec Charge that allowed zergs to run on the other part of the map)…
As to be expected the nerff came but the compensation…you know…
This junk that in many directions is worst than the perevious junk has the merit to provoke a +1 Range for Thor…
So we are double screwed, we received junk and on the other hand a more powerful enemy unit…
I consider the tempest more of a siege unit. Kind of like an air type colosi. Just without the splash.
What i do is throw a couple of tempests to back up my ground army and to siege especially PvT vs a terran that has alot of siege tanks etc
i really wish tempest did splash damage it would feel more to the unit… How can it shoot that huge ball of energy and only do single target it looks even more ridiculous when attacking marines
I never played when the tempest had this ability, so I’m just absolutely baffled by the thought of this unit being viable. This unit is the poster child for the balance treatment of Toss.
Did someone lose a game to mass tempests in Bronze league? The balance team knows what to do! Make the unit take up 10 supply, so it can’t be massed.
Did someone damage a tank to the point where a scv had to consider whether to repair it or not? I know what to do! Reduce the tempest’s ground range to 10.
Did the tempest evade being killed by a queen? I know what to do… let’s reduce its speed.
It really doesn’t take that much to impress me man. I think the void ray is a great unit against Zerg. I think the carrier is good enough… Everything in the game seems pretty good to me, except stalkers and this unit. Especially this unit.
I don’t even know how you could make the tempest worse. If you nerfed anything about the unit, it would be like who cares? Like cutting an inch of nub off my armless body. It don’t change much man.
Lol long ago when i was bronze i would actually mass tempest in 1 vs 1 games via proxy. Fun times. Send that stuff to a zerg mineral line when they dont even have a spire up for corrupters its actually funny as hell.
Yeah man im guilty… i prob got void rays nerfed to its current state. Cause almost every game i get rays. I get the saltiest of whispers and rage messages.
I love me some skill rays. Even when they nerfed its speed to quick sand levels, I was still making them. No bias or hatred going to stop me from the rays. The void ray is the sun ray in my life.
This guy never forgot to respect them, even if everyone else dissed them.
A well placed star gate rush proxy into double void rays vs zerg wins me 90% of PvZ matches by the time i get those rays up the zerg only have 2 queens and a roach warren and no spore crawlers and my second is up all defended by cannons.
People have to legit hate me man. Last night, for instance, I played this guy who absolutely dreads playing me. Get this. I MASSED void rays, and he went mass corruptor, viper.
Your normal guy gets HT and what not and tries to “counter parasitic bomb.” Not me. I’m not your normal guy. When I see a problem, I think more void rays is probably the answer.

Void rays are honestly so strong and good against 90% of units. Ive had people mass hydra vs me… all i had to do is keep my upgrades higher then the zerg via double cyber core and turtle up and casually snipe expansions. The rays melted zerg army in seconds and same with marines. Only issue i had vs terran with mass rays are viking kite micro. Then you can easily swap to ground and meme him especially if hes only getting vikings.
Without a doubt the void ray is def my all time favorite protoss unit and its the biggest unit that has been cried about since its release in wings of liberty… go ahead google Nerf void rays and you see these cry threads almost 99% of every expansion also.
So blizzard nerfed the void ray and only made prismatic alignment activated and do more damage to armored instead of charged like long ago and it doing more damage when charged.
Void ray was prob the most cried about Protoss unit of all time till warp prism recently took its place for being cried about.
Void rays are EASILY the most underrated Toss has, and it’s not even close. I think Showtime even called void rays the worst unit Toss has. Like he hates this unit with a passion.
To me, void rays are probably the most well rounded unit Toss has, lol. They’re amazing against Zerg and I would go as far to say they were essential in HotS P vs P. They’re still really good to open with and help shut down warp prisms.
Every Terran unit has 100 range and does 1k damage, so can’t really blame the void ray for not being amazing/good there.
I’m so happy to find another void ray fan Btw, the void ray actually got nerfed because of Harstem whining to Blizzard about P vs P being broken, due to sky toss being the best strat.
Like, really… we can get the void ray nerfed because of P vs P but can’t get cannon rushing nerfed. The only thing keeping me out of an insane asylum is refusing to believe this is real life.
Cannon rush does not need to be nerfed. It needs to be removed from the game. Ive been turned off from 1 vs 1 recently cause 100% of my PvP my opponent is a cancerous cannon rusher
And yes void ray is by far my favorite protoss unit. Ever since wings. I think its the most solid well rounded unit protoss have. Its expensive. It can be countered. And when massed its a force to be reckoned with 100%
Our society is so dumb man. 95% of the player base could quit the game due to THE DUMBEST STRATEGY OF ANY GAME, OBJECTIVELY. Yet, the remaining players and balance team would be like “bro… this strategy was put here by god. It’s as American as apple pie. Without cannon rushing, there is no SC 2. YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.”
I’m just going to assume that’s why the tempest sucks so bad. This stupid logic of… well… it’s always been the worst unit, so it probably should stay that way.
Yes tempest sucks atm cause some salty terran or zerg never scouted a proxy gate and got cheesed and memed on so they cried on the forums saying tempest is broken. I get it all the time when i get rays and proxy them ESPECIALLY VS zerg where its alot more effective.

Thebatz has been giving me grief for years for massing void rays. Even in HotS, when I just made a couple to protect colossi. So, yeah… I’ve seen how desperate and crazy the void ray hate can get.
I went undefeated vs a popular streamer, in part to void rays, in non phoenix games. Talking over 10 game sample, and every time… the guy hates on the void rays. “oh… that’s so bad. I should never lose to this.”
If it weren’t for the disruptor, people would realize just how much sense void rays make, by now. Now, people can just mindlessly go stalker, disruptor and look like geniuses. It’s pretty sad.
