Board game based on SC/SCII

I don’t really want to write a long wall of text here so I will try to be brief; I was thinking about this myself recently and wanted to see how different people here would approach this kind of task.

How would you implement a board game based on SC/SCII? There are already some obvious questions like how one would implement the playing field, basic resource collection, units, etc., but there are some more interesting questions that are worth thinking about. For example…

SC is ultimately a game about effective resource management and control; minerals and gas come to mind, but there are others: vision is a resource, your army and workers are both resources and the army-worker ratio needs to be balanced carefully, and even your attention itself is a resource that you have to balance (you can’t look everywhere at once, it’s not almost never worth it to micro a single reaper or a single vulture if meanwhile you float a ton of minerals).

There could certainly be some interesting approaches to implementing some of these features in a turn-based format with no fog of war.

This also got me thinking about C&C3:KW which I played over 10 years ago, and which had a global conquest mode, where everything was turn based, and you built army templates and stuff like that, don’t know how to explain further. Such a game would be much easier to port over to a board game format, but it got me thinking about something similar for SC2, where you could have a map of planets in the koprulu sector, some different resources, and then when you and another player get into an engagement, you fire up a custom game of SC2 (with a custom mod with special parameters set up to reflect what’s going on in the board game). This way a skilled player could end up winning an unfavourable engagement.

i feel like starcraft could be played as a card game like magic as well.

A card game also occurred to me as a possible approach. However, I dismissed it initially because I figured it would be more frustrating because there is a lot more of an RNG factor associated with the shuffling of the deck. But it really depends on the implementation, you could potentially design a minimal-RNG or RNG-free card game — I’ve never played MTG, so I don’t know the mechanics.

turning it into a card game removes the real time aspect so adding some RNG can make up for it. i could see it being pretty fun. but it would just be a numbers / strategy game.

Aight, there is such a thing, SC board game. It was produced in 2008-2009. I have one, really love it. It also has BW expansion tho.
