Are rankings relevant?

My question comes from the fact that this (playerstarcraft/profile/1/5852653175781195776) has managed to acquire more ladder points then a player with equivalent wins, and yet significantly less losses, (battlenet:://starcraft/profile/1/15795612661997109248 )
(Note. Both accounts have been ranked on the same ladder one account has the same wins and less losses then the other, and yet is ranked lower.)

P.s. Originally my inquiry was into why I have been ranked higher then this player (starcraft/profile/1/5852653175781195776) on the ladder that corresponds to my random race rank, when in fact the player I am ranked higher then is just about to be promoted to the next division, where as my profile is on the verge of being demoted.

For someone to be rank one in their respected ladder, and yet be on the verge of demotion seems odd to say the least. Along with the skill disparity among the players of equivalent rank to myself I encounter on ladder.

MY suggestion is to perhaps no longer nourish these players preferences (when I say player preferences I am referring to the fact that whilst one player may have significantly more wins and less losses then another player and yet have the same MMR the fact they may have been playing worse opponents and therefore receiving slightly less MMR points per match can explain this, it does mean that therefore some players accounts are being more consistently placed into matchs where they are favored to win then other players accounts.

Perhaps if the links provided in this forum post worked I could acquire additional understanding of how and why this match making system, and the ranking system work.

*THESIS ( imagine if a sports team was allowed to play games against teams that belonged to lower skilled leagues, and yet received the equivalent ladder rank as a team whom had only played teams belonging to higher skilled leagues.)

Win rate isn’t relevant because a GM player faces way better players than Plat for example. So having a positive winrate on Plat doesn’t make one better than a GM with negative winrate.

Hope I was clear.

I think the solution is therefore playing more often on the Asia servers for that very reason, in order to play better players. I mean quite literally I played one game on the Asian servers and I encounter a timing push the likes of which I had very rarely seen on American servers, and found myself saying, well that was clever. Where as In the same match up, (TVT) on the same map, on the American server, I had several games where I found myself saying, well that was cheesy. I guess i have to admit that I got caught up thinking winning my matches was more important then how I win , and who I win against…

Your ranking depends on the MMR threshold of a given rank compared to yours

Let’s consider MMR to be an accurate measure of your skill, so yeah your ranking reflects your skill, HOWEVER since you can’t get demoted rankings lose all its purpose

You end up in a rank that has players from various skill levels that got there by lucky win streaks and couldn’t get demoted

Your position inside a division is even more stupid since it only takes into consideration ladder points (acquired by winning/losing ladder matches)

A 4k MMR player gains 20 points by beating other 4k MMR players, a 3k MMR player gains the same 20 points by beating other 3k MMR players

The 4k and 3k are vastly different in skill but have the same win rate and points because they are playing in their respective MMR range

Only GM is relevant because its based exclusively on the MMR

No the rankings don’t matter really. I’ve been competing with my terran against a dude named koalapuch or semething similar for a long while for rank 1 diamond. When I finally checked his profile I saw he was several hundred mmr below me. But even so I had great fun trying to get #1.
It is what you mekr of it.
Also koalapunch if you’re reading this i just want to say F to the U! THE LADDER BELONGS TO ME! COME AT ME!!!

These players have either ZERO games played? And why were you ready to replay so fast? Plus one of them was Winter, and he was streaming during the match!

Ladder points are different from MMR and have little to no value, the only thing that really matters when it comes down to “who is better” is the MMR count.

ladder points is like the points on who’s line is it anyway… where everything is made up and the points don’t matter.
