Worst balance change in history

What are some of the worst nerfs or buffs put on a character or were supposed to be put on a character in the history of ow?

For me tbh is probably ball double boop or doom uppercut recovery originally nerfed to 0.5 seconds

Sombra’s OWL change they made. It didn’t go through, but I’m counting it as one of the worst

what no lol it was nerfed from 0.25 seconds to 0.35 seconds. but the worst one would have to be mercy 2.0 and the best one would have to be moira hps increased to 70

As a D.Va main, I still shudder remembering the Roadhog buff from Season 4. Hog could one-shot D.Va out of mech, he shot up in popularity to become essentially picked in every game, and every Hog was out for D.Va’s blood- purposely going out of their way walking past barriers to hook her away from the safety of her own team for cheeky kills.

Remember the Mercy rework giving her rez on cooldown, but it had two charges, and was super fast!?

I mean we have the obvious ones: DVA season 2, Ironclad Bastion, Mercy rework (as in her initial state after it), Hanzo rework, McSniper, and when they did 4 Genji buffs at once. Let me also point out something to those who were not around then: NO ONE was surprised by any of those changes breaking the game. These were tested and in every single case the dominant feedback was “you just made this hero mandatory at every single rank” and they all went live.

sym infinite tp which legit cripples the hero (imagine if you increased the downtime of all of a flanker’s mobility abilities by like 100-500% or so, that’s what it’s like with infinite tp).

the sombra hack cast time increase suggested by the “pros” expC.

The major symmetra and torb reworks were bottom line the worst changes I’ve ever seen. Not because of balance bit because of the feel. They became super dumbed down from where they were originally. Torb was one of the best buffers and zoners before the change. Now he’s just another set it and forget it turret character. Symmetra 1.0 had a fantastic setup, a buff applying, awareness network builder class with a great teleporter ult ability, what a combo. One of the most complex characters in the game with lots of growth potential. Now she is just another set it and forget it turret setting character, so boring.

Definitely the Genji buffs that made him busted for 1,5 months. Worst time I’ve had in OW in a while disregarding classic double barriers

Omg I almost forgot about that.
Mega buffed genji made me literally quit for 3 months. Even moth didn’t do that (though I was really new, and a mercy/d.va main at the time, loll).

Hack cast buff back in Feb 2018 - the point of no return for Sombra


The second mistake was pushing live not tested change ( 2 s recovery CD ) that made hack very buggy and made Sombra basically unplayable for a long time instead of just reverting single buff that made her OP


Then third mistake - infinite stealth and translocator

These 2 thing not only removed one part of her gameplay - cooldawn and timer management that were making her on of most complex characters that was also making her on of most fun and interesting characters to play.
But also made EMP stronger because of infinite opportunities to use it and in general removed by 70% counterplay against her, especially as tank


Right now she is just boring - you dont need to think about your routes, positioning and timing that much , just get the position and wait…

She was easily the strongest hero in the history of Overwatch on initial rework. I’m shocked they managed to get her into a decently balanced state.

I’m probably biased as a Ball player, but just the fact that he’s received nerf after nerf after nerf, even after it was obvious that he was fine. I know it’s not a single nerf, but Blizzard’s entire balance philosophy around Ball has felt like an intentional middle finger to Ball players.

Other than that, Genjiwatch. Maybe there was something worse, but I almost entirely stopped playing for a while I was so sick of everything not only revolving around Genji, but around nanoblade.

Symmetra’s rework

It was originally nerfed to 0.5 seconds, doom players and none doom players said this was too much and blizzard changed it to 0.35.
Nerfing it from 0.2 to 0.5 is just incompetence on their behalf and it’s why I have no faith in the balance team.
