Imo RIP overbuff. I had fun analyzing stuff that was probably wrong while we had it.

So I think this only considers GM rank. Do the stats for middle ranks reflect what middle rank players see in their games?

As soon as you give us a source with more trustworthy data, we can ignore the data Overbuff provides. But as long “your feeling” is the only source you and other people have, Overbuff will hold more value to the discussion.

This is completely at odds with Overbuff. Yes I know it’s only a subset of players but it’s drastically different from the Overbuff data

Top 500 Pick Rates - Season 11

Hello Everyone, It’s now been a couple weeks since the mid-season patch so, I have calculated the pick rates for the Top 500 in Season 11. Most of these aren’t a huge surprise though there are a couple things that stood out to me. So, just some housekeeping. These pick rates are for Top 500 PC in the Americas region. I mean a permanent dataset and not something you put together in your free time (kudos to you, this is amazing work!). We know its not to 100% accurate and the less data we have the less accurate it becomes. This does not change the fact that Overbuff is the only thing we have and until you dont want to create this every week for all ranks, we will use Overbuff. For normal discussions this data is more than enough.

Not to mention a rank and general breakdown of QP and comp is what people look at. Not top 500 data. People should not care what around 500… sorry… its more around 300 players play and rather what does on in Diamon, Masters and GM (the ranks the game is balanced around).

Honestly I only ever cared about GM pick rates and win rates because I believe strongly in top down balancing. I honestly do not care about what people in Gold are using. It’s irrelevant to balance from my perspective. The problem is that I don’t believe in the data enough to actually justify balance decisions based on it.

For example, just looking at the site right now, if I was using Overbuff as my source of truth, I’d be suggesting large nerfs to Wrecking Ball, large buffs to Winston, I’d advocate for D.Va buffs and nerfs to Mercy, Genji, and Mei. And with only a 5% win rate and the lowest DPS pick rate I’d really think Cassidy needed serious help.

But none of those conclusions would be right. They’re right based on Overbuff GM data but they are definitely not right, ya know?

Some balance changes affect ranks differently just due to how people play and they don’t translate 1v1 by all ranks. You can have a change that doesn’t tick percentages in low ELO and meanwhile has a much larger affect on low ELO.

Like if we change’d Junkrat’s AOE on grenades but not the direct grenade damage, it’d make low ELO Spamrat more viable and suddenly the winrates are up. but there are no Spamrats in high elo. Which people care about these because they don’t want the majority of the playbase to not be having fun because no one is skilled enough to deal against cheese.

What part of mid season patch and nerf do you not understand? Ranks were set weeks ago. You think anyone plays in the top 500 anymore? Do you think they play enough to even scratch their prior top hero time played?

There is a huge difference when you get a 10 meter dmg nerf. Huge.

They FINALLY fixed that around the start of OW2. I remember constantly pointing that massive flaw out to people who treated Overbuff stats like they were hard facts lol
