Why placements were SOOOO low this season?

Last season i was Gold. Now i placed Bronze 2.
I know several other people that happened to them.
Why this season has this kind of system ?

I don’t know whether this will make you feel better or worse, but it’s not just you, and it’s not just this season.

First of all, I’ve seen at least one streamer who’s placed way lower than he should. Then he’s basically forced to smurf back up to GM, which he does, unwillingly ruining a number of lobbies along the way.

Secondly, it seems to happen to me every time I place. When we get this sort of reset, I always place in silver or gold after placements, and then jump back up to plat in the “calibration” phase.

And the placement matches themselves are always of weirdly low matchmaking quality. Like sub-QP quality. They’re almost all stomps one way or another.

I want to try out Wu in Comp but I’m going to give it another week minimum, because I can’t be bothered with placement purgatory right now. I’ll do my chores later and muck around in QP instead.

I thought the devs said in the patch notes they were doing a soft reset this season. That may be why your rank is lower.

Can’t 100% be sure because I hardly pay attention to competitive. I just have a memory of that being announced before the new season started.

Its one of the worst experiences, because you think you are going to play vs people “kind of” in the same range but you don’t.

Its wild because at some point you face someone on the enemy team in the same situation and it gets awkward real quick :sunglasses:

As I understand they are pushing everyone up the ranks. But if you placed in bronze and really are a gold it should be pretty easy to rank up.

I’ve put off placements until the 1st week of the season has passed.

After fighting my way to a career high rank over the past 3 seasons, if I get placed 2 ranks below this time, I’m just not going to play Comp until the next reset. I cannot be bothered to grind endless strings of 30 minute Competitive games on Payload/Hybrid maps.

I was diamond last season, placed masters 5 this one.

That’s odd. I finished gm4 last season. Got placed gm2. All my accounts got placed higher than I finished last season. So I’m not really sure why. Ik they said they are pushing masters+ players up to get more people into gm instead of it being only .3% when in the past it has been 1%. I’m assuming y’all will just fly up to those ranks again, but my play 5 friend said he got placed silver 2. So idk what’s going on.

I have a 70% winrate with him in competitive BECAUSE they are giving me the easiest opponents. You should get in on this while all the casuals are here.

Maybe the system is bugged

if after 10 matches you placed bronze 2, something went wrong on your end.
but if you are talking about predicted rank. dont worry about that.

you are still playing with people who have the same mmr as you with the small decay of soft rank reset, just that the visual rank is not correct (soft rank reset)…
after 10 matches, the next 5-8 matches you will get the calibration modifer, this modifier will calibrate your mmr and visual rank to match what you should have.

if you are a old old player returing to overwatch competitive after many seasons, your mmr would have decayed a lot, and with soft rank reset additional mmr decay.

playing a few matches will get you close enough to your rank, this is why people say placement matches are very important. you need to be locked in for those 10 games.

if you do not play comp till next reset that is 6 months of mmr decay. and with additional mmr decay from rank reset, this means you will most certainly place lower than your rank since the matchmaker will be “uncertain” of your skill.

Not gonna lie, this system feels flawed.
The most fair system in comp is from MR and Apex, that you start from low and you slowly get up as you progress… Best system of comp i’ve seen in pvp games

But they don’t lower MMR right? Or did they say they’re doing that this season

noo… you just climb ranks in those game if you keep playing for long enough. its like climbing battlepass with 9000 tiers. even if you loose you will climb a tiny bit, that is the most casual friendly ranking, which is what those games majority player base is…

I only place because i do the drive at the end of season. Other than that indont touch or care about comp

they decay your mmr as if you did not play for 1 or 2 months.
they have done it everytime. that is how players who are locked in during placement matches and calibration matches place higher than previous seasons. after which it is upto them to skill up and survive in that higher rank as more players finish their placements.

I think the other part is each hero now has a metric too. Or at least it appears that way.

I was being hyperbolic but I can live with the scenario you described. Hopefully, they’ll have done something about the excessively long Comp matches by then.

Every season I place 2 to 3 deviations? lower compared to my normal rank which forces me to grind back to my previous rank again.

I’ve always hovered between Gold 1 - 3 for majority of the seasons. This season, my 240Hz monitor broke, so I only had access to 60Hz monitor. So I expected to drop to silver or something.

But surprisingly I didn’t and I only dropped to Gold 5 on support. It also seems like the game doesn’t want me to drop as low as silver. Because anytime I get close to dropping to silver, I start getting easy games which are basically free wins.

Tank on the other hand, I don’t know if it’s because of lower playerbase for this role, but I always get placed higher than I’d expected. I got placed Silver 1 on tank this season and I think is too high. Considering I barely know how to play half of the tank roster.

DPS is always the hardest role to climb but it’s not surprising. For one, there is more heroes you have to master in the DPS roster. Plus, you’re more likely to encounter DPS smurfs when you’re on a DPS role yourself. Because the game thinks the smurf is in the same elo as you. Which can make the climbing experience harder for non-smurfs.

To be fair, I’ve mostly been playing during odd-hours though (due to my insomnia)…in a region that’s already probably one of the smallest (OCE, Australia). So it’s no wonder I’m dropping ranks when I’m giving myself the biggest handicap possible in competitive lol.

The only way I could give myself more handicap is if I played in NA or EU using VPN with 300+ ping
