I see tracer everywhere, I get it, she is high skill, but… is high skill what overwatch is even about now? with so much cc…
like who legit cares about tracer? sombra has a bigger fanbase then her

Because the developers decided to make her the face last minute. It did not seem very calculated. If anything, Mei has become more of the female main character as time has gone on.

Tracer was one of the first characters they made when prototyping the game. There’s a lot of early dev footage showing some of the first builds of the game with Tracer.

It looks like Winston is the main character more than anything with how much he revolves around the plot in the present.

Yep, he was the Gamestop pre-order figure too. I am relatively confident he was supposed to be the face of Overwatch until they just decided that Tracer was more marketable.

First alpha hero was Tracer, can see some pictures with her weapons and weird big pixels.
When I saw the box art I actually thought Tracer was a dude at first lol. But yeah as a Winky I would rather have D.Va as the face of OW.

Tracer defines Overwatch better than D.Va and Mercy. An aim heavy hero who has very unique abilities rarely seen in traditional fps.
Mercy doesn’t even really kill, and D.Va was garbage on release.

Deciding the face of the game for the first place is not bad thing. Which character will be the most popular one after the release of the game? Nobody can know.
And D’va is far from the MAIN story line since the beginning.
She’s pretty central to the story
- She is close friends with Winston who started the entire Overwatch recall of all the members
- he made her chronal accellerator so she can stay anchored in time
- she was there when Mondatta, the spiritual leader of the omnics was assassinated
- she has ties/a rivalry with Widow due to that animated short
- she was at the museum when the doomfist gauntlet was being stolen by Talon and said hi to punch kid (the spray kid with cast)
- she’s the game’s first LGBT hero with Emily
- she was the youngest member of the squad fighting during multiple archives mission and the new recruit
- She was helping to fight against Doomfist when he broke out of prison
- She was the key figure in destroying the super gundam bot in OW2 cinematic (ok I know thats cheating a little)
But then you look at Dva…
- She was an esports gamer
- She was part of the MEKA squad tasked with defending Korea from the Kishin
Maybe I’m forgetting more but that’s all I can remember

Tracer is a pivotal character to the plot and is easily one of the most recognisable and most marketable characters in the game. Gameplay doesn’t matter at all.
She’s on the cover of the game and has featured in numerous adverts and cameos. If you asked anyone who hadn’t played OW to name a character, most of them would say Tracer.
She was the right choice.

Tracer was one of the first concepts of Overwatch along with Torbjorn and Bastion.
And I guess she’s just very iconic these days. She’s also the developers favourites

tracer is a soft spot for the devs, they want people to love her positive attitude and what have you. winston is obviously in game the biggest advocate for overwatch as a defense force.
and though dva is really popular with her mech suit and kawaii gamer getup, i dont think she represents us very well to other parts of the gaming community.
