Why is the SR/MMR formula kept a secret?

Personally, I’d like for it to be made public. If there is anything I can do to hasten and/or encourage the discloser of the SR/MMR formula, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thanks :+1:

I’m going to complain that there’s not enough to complain about.

Because for all we know bliz has some formula that is similar to a slot machine at a casino so they can keep people playing yo make more money…or maybe bliz has a pet monkey lovingly name “Winston” and hes the one that puts the matchs together…but as of late hes goten upset cuz they wont give him cookies anymore so hes just put us anywere and everywere…so they have to keep it all secret or we would know how to play and gey better at the game…or when to send cookies to Winston

I want to believe the reason is because they would have to do quite a bit of U/I work to show MMR with a blizzard polish. They’re not just going to dump the number on us.

This is my leading theory, but who really knows?

Why isn’t Blizzard’s proprietary software public information? Well, the same reasons as always that you always ignore while you spam this nonsense.

The only reason that matters at the end of the day is that it’s their own property that they developed without your help and have no obligation to share with you.

its not even a number, its a tensor, and if that needs any explanation thats exactly why they dont tell anyone what it is.

I don’t think this is what is holding them back.

its not holding them back from showing you a numerical approximation of it - which is your SR

i’m not asking them just to publish the conversion formula, although I wouldn’t be against it

If it went open we would at least be able to audit and track our own improvements and candidacy. Being judged on hidden performance standards means people are going to sabotage your evaluations if they even suspect being unethically monitored.

You can make plenty of rating systems ‘open’, whilst still maintaining and/or enforcing a patent. You can also have them well designed enough to be difficult to exploit, even knowing their inner workings. The premise behind e.g. crypto and many communication protocols.

Would love to see it. Especially since several esports associations are looking to see more transparency and integrity in the ladder systems. There are esports certification authorities who will simply deny official esports status to games that keep things too closed/internal.

My theory is one part laziness, one part trade secret.

and in the same vein, lack of funding

People seem to be forgetting the fact that it would change how the game is played.
You said it yourself, you would use the information in an attempt to increase the rate at witch you climb.

NBA players are made well aware of how the season and playoffs are structured.

Someone said the NFL made some decisions behind close doors as far as who gets first draft pick. I think this is heresy against the god of sport and competition.

the BIGGEST factor for SR on your first ever placements is not dying. I tried it once, had low deaths, let my team mates die sometimes, lost games, and placed Plat.

Is this a serious question?

First of all, if the general public knew the formula then people could exploit it, not that its already an issue.

Second, they don’t want you to know that Diamond-T500 are all similarly skilled, probably within 0.5% difference in skill between a 3K and a 4.8K, and they reserve T500 slots to the people who they feel are worthy to be on the leaderboards. They pick and choose who THEY want at the very top of the leaderboards based on whatever they want. Someone who can market their game favorably, someone who isn’t toxic, etc

if the NBA players knew how the season was schedule and how the playoff teams were determined, they could exploit it. What you’re saying doesn’t make sense to me.

I don’t buy it.

inconceivable!

This is demonstrably false. It’s like you’ve never watched diamonds, masters, gms and t500 play.
