Why is Kiriko's voice American?

Isn’t she meant to live in Japan and have lived there her entire life?

And why does she sound bored or super low energy everytime she talks?

I’ve noticed the bored sound is the same with Sojurn, does Blizzard not like new heroes having a personality?

Edit: I am asking why her voice, as in her ACCENT, is American.

I think Kiriko has a personality with her voice lines, but it is one born of mistrust, doubt, and a conflicting nature.

When Ana says she’s like herself at her age Kiriko is mistrustful at first wondering if its a compliment or not.
WIth Hanzo has a bit of contempt for him with things like tell him yourself or when he says he’s sorry about someone she’s like, “sorry enough to help”?
When Lucio asks about the music she sarcastically mentions about almost being able to hear the other sounds over the bass.

Again, she’s sassy, on edge, and probably cocky. Probably needs to feel like she needs to proof herself to all her doubters and seeing people who might put her down at each turn.

In terms of voice I see no issue with it. The VA has her heritage and its different than other people. Not every hero in OW needs to be some stereotypical expectation everyone has of a particular culture. Just between Ashe, McCree, S76, and Reaper we already have quite a few backgrounds and VA voice types of American though they are still distinct.

Are you implying native japanese are incapable of speaking perfect american english?

as much as I don’t like Kiriko’s personality, the VA is not at fault in here (and what’s with that weeb wish on wanting her to have her living in japan or smthn? lol)
Kiriko’s “personality” is like a… chill girl? who doesn’t give any f’s? that’s about it. Honestly she needs a LOT of work on whatever that stale personality is. Both visual design and character are a snoozefest, but the VA has nothing to do with it.

While the OP is wrong in the reasons for it feeling off, I was originally the side that the voice acting is fine, which it is. I realized the voice direction is bad.

The actress was given terrible directions and the written lines just don’t match up to how her character was portrayed in the cinematic. Game Kiriko and Cinematic Kiriko feel like different characters all together.

Those arent mutually exclusive. Do you think their voice actresses dont have personality?

He’s not really wrong. A native Japanese woman who’s lived there her whole life with two Japanese parents wouldn’t sound like she’s from Beverly Hills. Doesn’t matter how young she started learning English.

Why do y’all care so much about Kiriko’s accent lately

A native Japanese can also be black. That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to make Kiriko black.

America is the center of the world, if it’s not possible to white-wash ethnic characters by having them played by white americans, the next best thing is to americanize the accents so the rest of the world knows who is the cultural boss around here. you ess ay! you ess ay!

That’s a great point. White americans are an ethnic minority in japan, in bliz really cared about diversity they’d have made her white.

Kiriko’s voice actress does have 2 native Japanese parents. She grew up bilingual.

Get real. She’s not a great character, but that’s more of a writing issue than a voicing issue.

If you wanna complain about voices, go for hanzo or mccree. Guy who voices hanzo doesn’t like or understand Japanese pronunciation, and mccree’s voicing has so much effort that it doesn’t at all reflect the relaxed tone it’s supposed to have.

But yeah, complain about the girl who’s got English and Japanese tones to a tee.

What’s with the nonstop complaints?

I bet you that the Japanese ow players love kirko’s English voice. We already have genji who has a slight Japanese accent when speaking English. Kirko speaking English with American accent is fine.

TF2 made their scottish demolition man black, even though the demographic in scotland during the 1960s most likely didn’t represent this.

I don’t see any reason to have boundaries on where a race is represented.
