Why does Match Chat exist?

in games like WoW they make it so you can’t communicate with the opposing faction. Yet OW has major toxicity issues and match chat is overlooked by the devs, they wouldn’t need to put a filter on things like GGEZ etc if they didn’t add such a feature that encourages it in the first place.

I really feel like toxicity would be cut in half if Match chat didn’t exist on OW during competitive matches, like what does it add? Most of the time it’s being used is to grief people and smack talk.

This thread is a nice example to why Match chat shouldn’t be a thing outside of custom games tbh.

That’s really the only point to it.
I don’t know if this is a new feature in COD but they have death coms, so if you kill someone they can trash talk you and if you win the round/game you can trash talk the enemy team.
I don’t think there has been any games where things like match chat has been used in a positive way

they could make it off by default. Currently it’s only used to trash talk or ask people to report etc.

First thing I do on login unless I slip is turn it off, it literally serves no useful purpose. Devs will create a nigh useless endorsement system, but not do the sane (and easy) thing of allowing you to permanently turn it off.

I like banter and trash talk in games like COD, but people who play that usually also know what they are getting themselves into.

This honestely looks fun to me because if I were to play COD I’d know what to expect and I wouldn’t take any insults seriously and give so much back when I got to talk back

With OW that’s being marketed towards kids and people from other game backgrounds it’s honestely amazing how toxic they let this community become and how little they do to actually prevent things that cause toxicity.

If the game was 18+ and they didn’t care about that type of thing then I’d fully understand, but the fact you can actually get muted for banter etc when it’s technically encouraged.

You can disable it if it bothers you that much.

It is encouraged in a lot of things tbh, voice lines for instance which is kinda light but banter is definitely intended to be a part of the game based on that.

that isn’t the point of my thread, I personally don’t care, but I realised that so much toxicity in this game is due to it being a thing.

Exactly. Play long enough, you will realize that match chat literally serves no positive purpose, its the conduit for trash talk, little else. Team chat is sometimes useful, otherwise I only use group with friends.

I hate it when people want to remove features i paid for from me.

just make a stupid “I don’t want so see match chat” option.

Bc i really really love to hear “Tracer you annoying little brat go die in hell”

Nothing makes me more happy than raging enemies.

Otherwise i can ask for a Permanent Match chat, which never fades and is Bolt! and in bigger letters.
(Doesn’t matter if it helps one, EVERYONE should be able to have his Preference possible, not just 0 or 1)

Stop Forcing bs on me and Ask for Features that make it so you can have it as you want, Without Freaking changing how the game looks for the rest of the human population.

You can mute any and all chat. Except the global chat. Which is stupid. I block all who chat in global. The text doesn’t even shut off right when you’re in replay mode. The problem is that these settings are never freaking saved when you quit. I don’t understand why. Imagine this happening with mouse settings. You can’t even disable the chat, until you join a match. Why is that a thing as well? I really hope OW2 overhauls all these small problems OW has. And get rid of global chat. That should just be reserved for blizzard network problem updates.

I have made friends with enemies in Match chat before, sure it’s used to trash talk quite a bit, but I wouldn’t want it removed.
Don’t like it, don’t use it, but no need to take it away from others.

If you think match chat in Overwatch is bad, you should have tried playing tf2 pre-2016. Voice chat was open for the entire server to spam, and you’d have a bunch of Russian kids screaming at an American cheater. Worst part is, you couldn’t turn of voice chat for the first 10 years of the game’s life.

But honestly? I think match chat works. It lets you chat and be friendly, and if people are toxic then they get what they deserve- a ban. I used to be pretty toxic and would swear a lot in match chat (it was the norm in other games I had played) and after getting a suspension, I learned not to use match chat in a bad way.

I also had a great game where I charged the same zarya of the same cliff 3 times, and we were laughing and betting if I could knock them off again. So basically match chat can be friendly and teach people not to be rude.

I’m sure that match chat was a feature you bought the game for, yeah cut the bull lol.

I understand it being in custom games for scrims and stuff, but it really has no place in other modes. There’s is absolutely zero use for it other than hurling abuse at each other.

I’d rather they mute team chat.

General chat is atleast somewhat amusing.

I wouldn’t exactly shed a tear if they just cut it entirely since anything positive that comes from it is a drop in the bucket of toxic goo that makes up the rest.

I mean it gets called oversensitive watch for a reason. Remember T-bagging? When they literally have a spray of a tea bag being dipped into a cup since the launch of the game.

Because we all know that spray was ONLY there to show solidarity with the tea drinking crowd…in an FPS… lul

I never trash talk the enemy team, but what’s wrong with a little bit of trash talk? You’re competing to beat each other, shooting each other, killing each other, but you’re annoyed with a bit of trash talking? I don’t get this mindset at all

“a bit”?

The only thing worse than when people crap all over the enemy team is that which they do to their own. It reeks of piss poor sportsmanship where most either rage at a loss or gloat over a win. There’s no middle ground anymore, and left unchecked, it creates an even more absolutely awful environment to play in.
