It’s because, kinda like goats, the meta was extremely restrictive. Even during Dive you could play ranged characters and support from afar, but x2 shield just made half the cast of characters useless.
For me getting pressed by double sniper on different hg with pocket Mercy much more boring
As a DPS Main, double shield makes me want to cry in a corner and play Bastion.
But that was the meta which was common in the dev teams internal games. They had double shield pretty much from the first day you could have it.
It’s a slow, static, and nigh immobile comp, it also invalidates a large majority of the cast, which makes a lot of people angry because some people could be unable to play any of the handful of heroes (I mean, most of them are easy but some people want to have a bigger impact than just shooting shields or putting up shields)
But with the shield nerfs, it’s more plausible to play shield break, coming of Dive to Deathball to GOATS to Double Shield, the metas became more sustainable, but too sustainable, dragging fights out for minutes until one person made a mistake
I had to learn Orisa and Sig and I hated that, that is why I wrote this
You are asking why people don’t like giant walls of anti-fun?
One shield is unfun enough as it is.
Double shield has enabled double sniper in the past, I hope you enjoy it when it makes a comeback.
This time you wont have mei blocking sight-lines and dealing with the tanks.
Because when double battier is strong you spend much of the match emptying resources into a barrier for an attempt to get an opening against a team mate, who still has their own personal defenses to deal with as well as the resources of supports that can be funneled into them.
I don’t mind shields, but there needs to be a balance.
Shields too strong OR too weak is unenjoyable.
Honestly, I kinda liked it.
I’m sick of hitscans dominating.
As a tank main, I’m kind of okay with it being not meta.
But shields in general just aren’t a viable option, like, at all anymore. Orisa’s shield is just so wimpy it might as well not exist, and Sigma’s barrier feels much the same way.
I also seriously dislike how hitscan are now just so dominant with other DPS feeling very left out, because the whole game, hitscans were balanced around having to play angles to get past shields, and now they can just blast the teams all day long without recourse.
So I’d like to see shields be more powerful, maybe with more drawbacks or cooldowns too, so that they weren’t up 24/7 but they still had SOME power to block off the hitscan sniper meta.
You basically hold M1 behind 2 shields
And the enemy has to mirror it in order to even had a chance of hurting the softies behind those shields.
Or play Doomfist, which the forum REALLY adores.
Honestly, I found it incredibly boring to play as and against.
The classic knock on effect.
If it effects Widow, it effects everyone else far worse.
Two shields in an fps is the lamest thing ever
It’s residentsleeper
Because People like MOBILITY and SNIPING
They like DIVE, FLANKERS, HITSCANS and SNIPERS dominance to prevail.
Whatever meta that denies those makes people upset.
Double Barrier is more about stats, passive value already offered by the characters’ kits.
You could get a comp that would answer to all that stuff said above .
Teams would stare at each other on a breaking barrier fight, any sniper or ranged flanker (histcan or not) would be blocked by barrier repositioning / spamming and any flanker or Diver would be responded with CC, high AoE healing and defensive cooldowns.
I personally didn’t mind it, although I can understand the fatigue of constantly having to burn through numerous Orisa barriers, and the original Sigma shield of 1500. I think nerfing all the barriers was a mistake, and an idea I saw proposed, was just limiting main tanks to 1 per team, which I liked, but further limits the choice-aspect of the game, that 2-2-2, also something I liked, already limited considerably just to ensure GOATS became impossible to run.
Of all the various metas that have come and gone, double sniper will forever be, imo, the worst one. While dive could be rather intense to deal with at times, double sniper felt like every fraction of a second, forced into the open, was a chance to be picked off, but im biased and don’t believe any character should innately have a primary or secondary fire that on its own can one shot. I can tolerate ashe-mercy if only because its two characters working together (seems fitting for a team-based game you know?)
I can understand why double barrier could feel like a static-battlefield at times, but at least you were able to fight back.
They cant hit anybody in no shileds meta too.
Most complains was from tanks. Becouse as DPS you still can pick Doom or Reaper or Mei or something else.
But as tank you will play Orisa Sigma nonstop and just shoot shields.
I mainly heal and I thought it was fine honestly. Better than the current state where main tanks like Sigma and Orisa apparently feel like throw picks. I get a main tank on my team once every 4-5 games. I haven’t seen Orisa in months. Loads of pressure on healers to compensate for all the protection that main tanks are no longer there to provide. Roadhog and Hammond in every other game. Very little space being created. Spending all my time hiding around corners from long range damage while my 2 off-tanks and 2 DPS spam “I need healing” from different corners of the map.
As you may notice, I’m not part of echo-chamber saying this is “the best meta of all time”.
Seems like people forget the main thing. It wasn’t just shields. You had mainly bunker picks with the best abilities in the game. Shield was the cherry on top. It was a slog to play.
Because this is a competitive FPS game and double shield literally makes the game about shooting shields and not: flanking, sniping, withstanding pressure, etc.
Made the game way too casual, you’re supposed to use your skill on top of a heroes kit, know how to survive as your role and outplay your enemies. Now you’re shooting barriers to see who’s can break first.
