People have latched onto calling her a pornstar or adult film actress, but she was a model who did a few nude photoshoots. I wouldn’t consider anything she did p*rn or acting, and she’s definitely not a star considering how much you need to narrow down searches to find her.
And she’s seemingly been retired for a number of years.
People are just taking any opportunity they can to try and make the Cassidy name change controversial, or just show their disgust for the p*rn workers whose content they most likely consume.
Exactly. So why change the name in the first place? Changing a fictional characters name because of real world issues is wrong and breaks the immersion on so many levels.
More people will be reminded of the whole situation by seeing the name Cole rather then seeing Cree. Now I look at Cole, and all I think about is why the name was changed. And it’s always gonna be like this.
If Cree stayed Cree people would just let the time do the work. Now we’re just gonna be reminded on every character selection screen for ages.
If McCree had thought about the consequences more, maybe he wouldn’t have done anything. A constant reminder that bad things happen to abusers may have been all that was needed, and now Overwatch is providing that to millions of people. Even if in the grand scheme of things it wasn’t really much of a punishment.
The only thing here that’s being punished is the playerbase by being dragged into this mess and one of their favorite heroes having his name changed to Cole Cassidy (I mean really? there were billions of better names suggested to make this easier to swallow)
I mean the exact same hero is still there, the only difference is he’s referred to as something else now. If one of your friends changed their name would you completely cut ties with them if the new name wasn’t cool enough for you?
Lmao if you’re being ‘dragged into this’ you have nobody to blame but yourself; it is literally so easy to ignore. If you’re getting all worked up over a fictional character’s name being changed that’s on you mate.
If it’s so easy to ignore then what are you doing in this thread? If it’s so easy to ignore why there are countless threads on the forums about it? If it’s so easy to ignore why change it in the first place?
You do realize that your “logic” can be applied the other way around, right?
Because I don’t want to ignore lol. It’s fun to discuss.
And it’s easy to ignore for players, not so much for the OW devs, who have a far greater connection to the irl Jesse Mccree. The change is for their sake, at least in part.
Yes, but you actively work to minimise them, which is what the employees did about their workplace. That’s their job; if a player is triggered by it, just turn the game off, if an employee is triggered by it, it’s FAR more taxing to just move job.
Right, so you acknowledge that hearing the name can have very real consequences, yet, you’re still opposed to it because it might confuse some new players…
I don’t know anyone who’s made that as a point. Making a strawman of someone’s position doesn’t make you right. The point is far closer to ‘erasing reference to bad people makes the media more tolerable’. Also, you’re saying this like it was Bobby K. himself making this change and not the Overwatch team that had to directly interact with the guy.
I don’t mean to diminish anyone’s suffering, but I really cannot figure out another way to word this so I apologize in advance.
The difference between his new name and his old one is that, while they can both be triggers, his new one would be a trigger by coincidence. We know for certain that his old name is upsetting to the developers, specifically because Cass was originally named after the employee. There is an intentional tie there, unlike his new name. Between the two, (unless the new one is of particular significance to you), continuing to use the old one is disrespectful at best.
I do agree that the name change will draw a lot of attention to the situation and that many people will continue to use his old name, but the developers fought to have it changed. And they fought for a reason. I think we should honor that the best we can.
Yeah exactly, thats what I was trying to convey (apologies if it didnt come across that way). Youre absolutely right. If theres a game, or book or anything with a main character with any of the names, I wont watch it, I wont play it, I wont read it. Thats up to me to adapt around my triggers, I wont email whoever made whatever it is to change it for me.
But if I had to work on a project with a main character being one of those names, I honestly dont know how well Id be able to handle it. Literally just constantly reminding you of what happened and living through it multiple times Completely agree with team 4 on changing the name, if thats what helps them.
I agree for the most parts. Like you said it was a ‘‘stunt’’ to make Blizz in short look better in their multiple lawsuits they are in right now. This is a short sighted action. But I doubt they change the name back to Cree anymore. Man I wish Blizz didn’t fall this down in the hole.
