Why changing Mccree's name is a bad idea

While I don’t condone any of the terrible things that happened to cause the name change, I think Blizzard shot themselves in the foot with the name change. Big time.

For starters, Blizzard changed the name to not be associated with it because of the harassment. I get it. What was a huge oversight by Blizzard is the potential that they’ve now named the character to another name that might negatively trigger other groups. I hadn’t even considered this until a friend of mine cringed at the name “Cole Cassidy” because someone in his family was murdered by a guy named “Cole”. It was a sore spot for him, and while he did play Overwatch from time to time, he just easily said he wont go back to it to avoid that name now.

After hearing that, I completely changed my mind on the name, and I will continue to call him Mccree. This alone made me realize that Blizzard is about to have quite a few years ahead of them of being associated with sexual harassment now even more so because of this name change.

A lot of the community is completely against the name change. They will be spamming it over coms and chat in game. They’ll deliberately bring it up on social media, and other forums in protest. The point is, because of this name change stunt, any new players, and any old players that return to Blizzard or Overwatch after some time are going to be confused as to why people are calling this character 2 different names.
This is going to:
A) cause a lot of frustration for mainly new players not being able to react to callouts.
B) eventually bring up the conversation of how Blizzard was involved in multiple lawsuits due to sexual harassment in the work place.

This change is going to just keep this story alive and ultimately people will never forget about it. As long as there are players from launch day, its going to be hard to erase 5+ years of calling a character by a name and then just switch it. It’s just not going to happen.

With all that being said, none of this comes as a surprise to me. Blizzard has been making terrible decisions year after year lately. From the “Free China” fiasco, and catering to them, then getting screwed by the Chinese new gaming laws, all the way to this name change and thinking that everything is better now… they just keep screwing their main fanbase. They keep screwing the people that grew up with them. I’ve been a fan of Blizzard since Warcraft 3, and Starcraft 64, but these last couple of years have made me question if it’s even worth being a fan anymore.

They can make this situation right. They can do it without the name change. If there’s nothing else I believe in, it’s that Blizzard did the name change, not because they care, but because it’s the quick and easy way out with multiple lawsuits over their head. That way it makes them look less scummy when they’re in court.

I just feel sorry for everyone involved with their nonsense, including the player base. For the ones that support this name change, I’m sorry to break it to you like this, but you guys are the ones being played. Praising the name change, Blizzards easy way out, only adds fuel to the fire. You’re basically saying “If someone is sexually harassed in the workplace then just change a name and everything is ok now!” Because supporting this change, is conveying that message to Blizzard. Cancel culture is NOT the correct response.

Blizzard needs to do something else. Blizzard needs to do a lot more. If Blizzard really cared, they would be donating to sexual abuse victims, hosting fundraisers, bringing more awareness in a more impactful and positive way. A name change is lazy, not caring, and is basically saying “this small change will get the fans off our back for years of sexual harassment”. Don’t fall for it.

So before you go out and start bashing people for continuing to call our beloved hero “Jesse Mccree”, try to remember that maybe “Cole Cassidy” might be a trigger for another person. Or maybe you can stop and think for a second that this might be exactly what Blizzard wants in order to take the easy way out. I’ll continue to call him Jesse Mccree.

This applies to literally any character in anything. Can’t be helped.

Yup. I have multiple name triggers and I dont expect the world to revolve around me when it comes to them, I just need to cope. It sucks but thats how it is.

again wasnt blizzard, was team 4 because they didnt want to be around mentions of that person daily

So you clearly understand why and how names can be triggers, but you’re going to keep using Cass’ old name despite the fact that the team changed it to avoid that.

Using his old name isn’t going to do anything other than potentially upset the developers and victims. I get that you don’t support blizzard (I’m right there with you) but you’re not making a point by sticking with it. The people in charge don’t care.

The main point I was trying to make with that statement was that the name “Mccree” isn’t going anywhere. This is mainly due to the communities history with it. Whether they change the name or not, it’s not going to get rid of it. What they ultimately ended up doing now is taking this sore situation and throwing another name in it, which can now trigger 2 groups of people. This is the exact reason why the name change doesn’t really fix anything.

If the change means Team 4 or Blizzard employees in general don’t have to see the name ‘Mccree’ as often, and they prefer it that way, its a good change. It doesn’t affect the wider playerbase in any significant way. Lots of heroes have alternate ‘names’ used for callouts, e.g Soldier is “legs”, Winston is “monkey”, Wrecking Ball is “hammond” sometimes. Mccree/Cassidy may well end up being referred to by two different names but this is nothing new for Overwatch.

Who is saying this? Please provide a specific example.

Why are you whining about a single name change no need to make an essay KEWK

You can easily find the examples all over social media and reddit. The people that basically just forgave everything Blizzard did and overly praising this change.

See, this is clearly a blatant strawman. If it’s so easy to find examples, why can’t you provide some? No one is letting Blizzard of the hook because Mccree’s name was changed.

The main problem is it shows weakness. Willing to bend the knee and delay all current projects to put this name change threw shows that Blizzard is willing to listen to out rage culture when it suites them.

While they think it bought them good PR and avoided a problem all it did was open them up to more possible “request”. The kinds of people who were out raged by the Mcree name are not the type to ever be satisfied. They will ask for more

I’m not aware of any great call from the community to change the name, before the announcement was made. If it existed, can you show where it was? Also, it’s inarguable that the decision to change the name has received overwhelming negative feedback. If Blizzard is suddenly interested in placating the crowd, why didn’t they reverse the decision in the wake of the backlash?

Either you didn’t read the post, or didn’t comprehend the message.

Not whining at all. People can do what they want. I’m just stating an alternative viewpoint. This also goes a little deeper than just a name change. You may want to read the post again. I’m sorry you didn’t comprehend it the first time.

Why can’t you go look? Why is it so hard these days for people to not want to do just a little research? It’s literally in every thread I’ve seen pertaining to this topic. You always see the people going “YES! COLE CASSIDY! THANK YOU BLIZZARD! :hugs:” Something to that degree. In reality, those people should be livid. We all know Blizzard is just going to keep doing the minimum until the situation is quiet enough and then stop completely. That part of the community is basically praising Blizzard for giving them a bandaid when they should be demanding for surgery. A name change is literally going to do nothing in the long run except cause a stir in the community.

obviously,

i’m not reading a fat wall of text because of a simple name change

This point is nonsense.

You’re picking at straws here this entire post my guy.

Then please do not comment on this thread if you refuse to read the post.

I have. I scrolled through the Twitter announcement, and I’ve looked at all the most popular threads on this forum on this topic. I’ve read the articles that major gaming news websites (like IGN, PCGamer, etc) have written on the name change and the comments on these articles. I haven’t seen a single compelling example of a person saying “everything thing is okay now!” or something along those lines. Plenty of people are indifferent or supportive of the name change, sure, but nobody is calling for the lawsuit to be dropped. If you’ve got an example of that, link it, it’s not that hard.

It’s not nonsense. It’s a valid point. All of this started because of a name that triggers people. My friend made a point by just making that comment about the name “Cole” and how it bothers him for a valid reason. Same as the name Mccree bothers half of the community for a valid reason. That wasn’t my whole point on this post, that was just something that happened that made me look at the situation different, and change my original opinion on the situation.

i can reply here bro
