But as a point to get the name changed back/why it’s a bad idea, this would end up being an endless cycle. People can get triggered by Jesse too. Maybe even some other names in the game like jack, Reyes, ana, winston, etc.
Idk how this could effect the way you view the name change.
Selective listening I suppose when it come to Blizzard. In this case the “outrage crowd” was mostly workers from what we have been told. People who felt stressed and triggered by hearing the name at work after being abused. Not that we have any real proof yet far as I know the thing hasn’t gone to court one way or the other.
Though again selective listening as blizzard acted on this but has ignored the other worker complaints about crunch culture and other such abuses to contract workers and the like.
For me it’s less about the name change and more of these insulting tactics to win over the community. As I already stated, I’m still calling him Mccree, along with the majority of the community, because that’s what I’ve been calling him for the last 5 years.
As for the other names in game. I get what you’re trying to say, that any name can possibly trigger someone. Yes you are correct. I won’t argue that point because it’s true. It was just sad to see a friend react the way he did. I mean, Blizzard took a character that he really liked, and the new name completely turned him off. If it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t have posted the topic here im sure.
and likely never will. Sadly these things tend to get settled out of court. Because when it comes down to it money is generally more important than any kind of “justice”.
Not that I can argue as justice doesn’t pay the bills and quite often these settlements are rather large.
Mcree isn’t, but they are trying to sue blizzard far as I know. Because you know Blizzard has way more money and while possibly abusive not entirely sure what Mcree did was actually illegal. I mean sexual abuse laws vary from city to city, state to state and so far we just have what ever the “victims” claim.
I don’t think any actual evidence or recordings have leaked that I know of and I am always cautious of believing people who come forward years after the fact and blast it across social media before suing a multi million dollar company.
If you went to the police fine… but far as I know that wasn’t the case here.
2 main reasons why its insulting. 1) They should do something much bigger to attempt to salvage their reputation after all the screw ups they’ve had lately. 2) You should never mess with a major character in such a way. That’s just asking for problems, which has become very evident lately in the community.
If you were expecting Blizz to do anything that actually helps the issue instead of surface level stuff you are just naive at this point. Blizz had been doing this for a bit now.
The overwatch team is a part of blizzard Activision sure, but they weren’t involved in the whole situation. Mcree was a developer on a different game.
It’s a name change with lore to back it up. We’re not talking about reworking him on top of changing his entire appearance on top of changing his personality on top of changing his voice actor or something like that.
Yep. I agree with you. It’s just really a sad thing to see when you’ve been a steady fan for 20 years. I’m all but ready to throw in the towel with Blizzard at this point. They’ve lost their soul. They’ve lost so many talented devs and leaders just within the last 5 years. It’s been a really sad thing to watch.
Not all abusive behavior rises to the level of illegality.
McCree isn’t currently being named in the lawsuit or by employees as having done anything illegal, so should be careful not frame it as such at this time.
The employees did call him an abuser but have not stated it rose to the level of illegality. Unless that changes, we should just go by what we know. Whatever it was bad enough to get him fired but not bad enough for the lawsuits or police.
Ah okay I think I understand your point better now. But do we have to dismiss Team 4’s decision as “outrage culture”? The way I understand it they decided to change the name after mutual discussion, and it was done (at least in part) to improve mental wellbeing in the team. Seems pretty reasonable to me. The reason they didn’t take greater action is because they’re just one team lol. The OW devs don’t have the power to singlehandedly overhaul ActiBlizz.
Yeah, I was aware of that. Which just further makes me scratch my head on the name change if he wasn’t even on the team. On an unrelated note, it makes me wonder if thats why Jeff left so suddenly. I wonder if he knew something was coming.
I understand all of that. I’m not saying that a name tweak or change couldn’t be done under normal circumstances. This just feels forced, rushed, and lazy the way they’re doing it. It’s not going to be accepted this way. It feels completely wrong. In my opinion, they should have just given him a cool nickname and used that for everything.
Just remember it’s not as though each game dev team works in a totally isolated bubble. Team 4 devs are surely on speaking terms with many of their colleagues working on WoW and Diablo. We can be reasonably confident that some OW devs personally know/are friends with women on the WoW team who have been made victims from this harassment culture.
Imo it doesn’t really matter if the community “accepts” it or not. Again, plenty of heroes are referred to in-game by community nicknames instead of their real titles and it doesn’t seem to bother the devs at all (no reason why it should). They’ll use the new name internally, and you’re not going to be lynched if you continue to say “'Cree” in your shotcalls.
It takes a single instance for someone to find out that Cassidy is sometimes referred to as McCree, and it’s going to be when they’re still learning the game
It’s not like they’re going to hear it for the first time in the game that would have pushed them into Grandmaster
… I’m having trouble finding anything other than completely work safe pictures and a defunct website that now goes to an artists site.
Please show me where we learned that she was an adult actress AND a degenerate?
Do you work in an office at all? I don’t know about you, but I know the “icky” people in my office even if they never step foot in the building. If you’re a jerk/perv/egomaniac, people will talk and you will be known.
