Why are People Defending Heroes being in the Battle-Pass?

They don’t get Fiscal Year 2024 budgets for a few more weeks.

The company is still probably running on Kotick assigned budgets.

Eh it’s annoying, but tbh Ive been playing league for over a decade and have nearly all the champions besides the ones i dont care to own. The game is free now, and while it leaves a bad taste in my mouth considering OW use to be a paid game. It is what it is, you’d never get the new heroes for free in a F2P game these days.

Cause there’s money to be made from people who can access the full BP when it comes out, i became one of those for these BP.

Don’t get me wrong, i saved about 700 something coins before it was announced and i didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get the mythic hanzo but i thought it’d be wiser to just get the newest one instead, so i bought the cheapest coin pack

Apex Legends: You start of with what …6 characters and 1 or 2 are in rotation. The rest you have to either pay for or grind those credit things to unlock them.

Rainbow Six Siege: You play the game to unlock them slowly overtime or you pay to unlock them

Valorant: You pick a champion to progress a mini pass for, level 5 gets you the unlock, or you pay money to unlock. (Level 5 btw takes quite a while)

In all of those game examples above, there are meta heroes for each map or playstyle. Yet, Overwatch does the same thing and they get absolutely moaned at. I don’t get it with some of you. You could be given 10000000 credits and you’d still find something to complain about.

You pick a character at the start of the game and stick with them throughout. You can’t switch mid game.

Same as above.

Same as above.

Because those games don’t have this little thing called “swapping”. It’s a core feature in OW to counter swap based on your enemies’ picks. You can’t really do that when the counter is locked.

You have a Mauga/Hog on your team and enemy uses Ana? Just pick Kiri- oh wait, she’s locked.

Enemy picked Mauga who’s easily the strongest tank and your only real choice is mirror matching? Too bad, you don’t have him. Have fun being forced into using extra effort just to try and match him with a worse tank.

There are two types that protect any OW “2” downgrade. 1 - contrarian Andies (a type that thinks that disagreeing with the general opinion counts as smart personality), and 2 - blizz devs.

Are there any F2P hero based games where the new characters aren’t locked behind a paywall, at least initially? I despise OW2’s decision to lock new heroes behind battle pass/XP grind.

But maybe they’re doing it because they think F2P monetisation model = new characters must be locked behind battle pass to make more money. What if you can just sell cosmetics to make money and locking hero wasn’t necessary? I wonder if the higher ups ever though of that.

I guess it depends on how much money the hero being locked is bringing the company. And whether the money gained is worth the damage it is causing to the game from players being frustrated.

Personally? I don’t think it’s worth the damage, especially considering that this is a game that’s based around hero-swapping. But that’s just my take on the matter. Cosmetics being expensive if fine, because that doesn’t affect the gameplay.

I know people don’t like overpriced cosmetics either, but I’m on Blizzard’s side regarding cosmetics. I just don’t support them locking new heroes behind battle pass, I think it’s scummy and doing the game more harm than good (way more than expensive cosmetics).

Of course they thought of that.

They don’t care because they are Scum.

People in this thread shouldn’t be Defending Scum because there’s also Scum running other Game Studios.

I don’t think anyone defends it… Just most don’t care.

Theres a vocal section in forums and Reddit against it… But they don’t equate to a big % of the players.

Why shouldnt I be? Game is great.

If you say so. Don’t let the ghosts hit you tho :ghost:

“Is bread this Thread”? Damn, Auto-Correct did me Dirty.

But still, people saying that other Games Also Lock Heroes and therefore so can Overwatch is Justifying Overwatch doing it. Also, they lack the Common Sense Required to Realise that those other Games aren’t like Overwatch and that Monetising Heroes is Stupid.

They might not be happy with it, but if they aren’t then why are they so Complicit? Just stay quiet.

Smash have you a massive roster before the dlc characters and a full completed game with story and multiplayer new OW players don’t even get the full original roster and let’s not mention the disaster that was OW2 launch and hilariously bad campaign missions. I get that smash has dlcs and you can buy characters but you
Got a full product when buying it not what we got for OW2

I don’t think that’s right.

Yeah, you get 1/3 of a Product if you’re New and 1/2 if you already Bought the Original. :man_shrugging:

It literally is. Kiriko, Ramattra, Lifeweaver and Illari all have ‘Hero Challenges’ where you need to Press like 4 Buttons and then Gain 50 Kills on another Character in that Role to Unlock them.

Thankfully they aren’t THAT Stupid to FOMO HEROES!

Did you really think Blizz would make it that easy? Try again, because the actual challenge is to play 50 games as the role with wins counting as double to unlock these heroes. Let’s just say that a new player will have access to competitive before unlocking their 3rd OW2 hero.
