I want to hear him out, but I am EXTREMELY weirded out by the idea that he could both understand that the game has counters, and also thought that walling off certain heroes was a good plan.
I don’t think you can have both. Or you at least shouldn’t.
If you are expecting a hero to be a balancing answer to something, but not have it available to people, then, how do you balance for that?

It may have not been his choice, we don’t know what kind of fights go on behind closed doors there. It ending up in the game, is not a thing he may have had control over.

It is just such a weird choice. I can’t understand what they were hoping to get out of it.
You have a shortage of Support players. You hope to get more playing on release. You then take the one reason they would queue up more, and put it in behind the battle pass grind.
Blizzards website leaked from a bad update, and FoxGirl is released on the track of the free part of the battlepass.
So, you have to do battlepass stuff, if you want to unlock being able to play her. So, some heroes will be inaccessible to some players.
So they won’t be able to switch to counter, because they may not have unlocked a hero…
It is just such a weird choice for overwatch.

That and them clarifying that to unlock her without it, you will have to get her as a step in the battlepass.

I could understand this for the PVE but in PVP?
This isn’t a shooter where your heroes abilities are secondary to their weapons z it’s a switch to counter game with no weapon customisation or builds.
I don’t see a way for this to be turned into a positive…At best heroes will be at the very start of the battlepass but then what’s the point? It also just undermines the premium passes 
I swear to god if they release a official statement about a miscommunication and they disclose exactly how the BP works, I will be laughing for a week.
It would have to be multiple miscommunications in a row, and yeah that would be funny. It would be them backing the hell away from it.
If not, then they are pretty much going to have to disclose exactly how the BP works, and I don’t think people are going to be happy.
If they do neither…

Well, I think the idea is that there’s enough characters now so that you don’t get into a situation where new players/etc aren’t completely screwed 
The characters aren’t so different like in Dota where you can be just outdrafted with a couple key pick bans 
Unless I’m wildly underestimating the emergent gameplay coming up with these new chars…
