When do you soft throw?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sweaty tryhard in probably 97% of my comp and even qp games. But there are occasionally times when I may not care about winning or losing as much as usual. In these situations I might switch to a hero I know I’m not the greatest at or play one of my mains but with a different play style (usually worse) than normal. Some examples of such situations:

  • If my team is so toxic to the point it would actually bring me more joy to see them lose than it would for me to get the win.

  • When I’m angry at the matchmaker for giving me feeder and bot teammates against smurfs for 10+ games in a row and decide to surrender. Maybe by playing Genji or Doomfist the game will realize I’m not actually a God capable of carrying these useless plugs and give me a semi competent team next game. Surprisingly this usually works and I wish I would have done it sooner.

  • Someone on the other team who got a free win because of me soft throwing is now my teammate. I don’t want to give them another free win so I’ll make them work for it this time by carrying my Junkrat. I’d usually only do this if they were talking trash or being annoying in the previous game.

  • Rest of my team is soft throwing, picking 5 dps etc. If you can’t beat em why not join em?

  • Game is already in the bag. Other team has 2 or more leavers so may as well use this opportunity to improve my winrate on Mercy.

  • When playing tilted. Sometimes I don’t feel like switching off a hero, especially when I feel like my hero choice isn’t the problem. So because I think we could use a Rein but also nobody is dealing with the tracer, I end up chasing tracer around the map for the rest of the game with Rein.

  • I sometimes don’t like to switch off Rein when the enemy Rein is destroying me because my ego won’t let me.

  • Switching heroes to send a message to my team. This usually requires me to be a bit tilted. Like if I’m the only healer and nobody is helping me stay alive I might rather just play Torb instead until someone else goes healer. Especially if the team was complaining about heals.

Do you ever soft throw games and if so when?

I usually throw when theres someone acting like a d-bag. People like that deserve to fail and I find it hilarious when theyre raging at the team. Their salt fills me with joy

So basically your first point. Lol

Right here. Be polite folks, you win more games.

I just play whoever I feel like playing now tbh. Comp was sold to us as this “amazing” game mode, but it really just ended up being kinda dumb. So…it’s like QP but only one push. Yep…kinda dumb.

Yep. If someone’s really obnoxious or salty I don’t hard throw, but I’ll just stop trying very hard. “I know if I chase this kill I’ll end up out of position and die…but killing is fun.” That sort of thing. I’ll mute everyone and hide chat and just have some fun. I’m not going to let some d-bag ruin my fun.

Mind you, they have to be really annoying for me to get to that point, so it doesn’t happen very often.

Never, I practise heroes when things are going south :upside_down_face:

Yep, I soft throw about two days ago when I had 2 supports and 4 damages. So instead of taking a lose. I selected Torb and hard carried they game while Mercy solo healed. We won and only the Mercy thanked me.

Other damages were just jelly they got out damaged by a support main who select Torb.

Never.

I’ve seen too many games won at the last second that appeared hopeless up to that point.

Of course, a lot of games are just hopeless all the way until the end! But i have to try hard each time just in case.

I soft throw whenever I really feel like playing a hero I’m not used to (cough widow cough), when I start picking a tank/healer and everyone else picks a DPS (so I just change to DPS too) or when I’m trying and just have to change to a hero I can’t play very well but no one else on the team will when X hero is being a special annoyance to the team.

I usualy softhrow when i have team full of morons who blame me for their mistakes or if i am alone in voice chat. I dont care about win when people dont care enough to join voice chat.

Doing it for one toxic person is dumb tho. What about other 4 who want to win?

I don’t throw. Throwing doesn’t help. It’s not going to make you feel better, if anything worse. It will make you a more toxic person more willing to throw than win a game. It’s not good for the community or yourself.

I, instead, spread positivity throughout my games (Usually.) Instead of giving up on my teammates, I understand where they are coming from, and I will help them to get over any hustle, such as a lost team fight or a freak accident or something.

There’s no need to get toxic or throw. Even if you are going to lose, stay positive.

Honestly, i never soft throw (at least not consciencly). I’ll take a seemingly losing game as a challenge and try to motivate my team to turn things around. In overwatch, the game’s not lost for as long as it lasts, never forget that brothers and sisters.

Ok and you are the number 1 proponent to the perfect matchmaker.

The system is flawed people should be incentivized to play 1oo% everytime

Why should i care for people who are toxic and dont care enough to join voice chat? . Answer this.

I consider not joining voice chat as softhrowing too.

No, matchmaker is not perfect but its not bad either. I every time climb into my elo so its working.

Climb into ur elo by solo performing?

Padding dmg stats?
Going dps when there are 3 already?

The matchmaker does not incentivize teamwork. There isnt much consistency from game to game

Never. I’m doing everything I can to climb. Why would I want to make that harder on myself. I’m sure many people would claim my best is “soft throwing” because I am not plat+ skill. I never do anything but try my hardest to win.

I most play support so i am usually in the back line, so i start soft throwing when i see my team make stupid mistake after stupid mistake and of course not in voice comms so i can help them out cause i have a a great view of every team fight, or contently my team lets a DPS walk right through them uncontested and i get killed, no peeling no helping they just leave me to die over and over so if they dont car about thier healer i wont care about them have fun trying to win with no or very little healing

Does not incentivize? Don’t you think that by going 3rd dps, or not playing like a team significantly lowers your chances of winning? Isn’t THAT the incentive?
Also there is no way in hell you are gonna climb out of…at best plat if you are a bad teammate, which is another incentive.

That is literally not throwing if you carried the game lol

I used to soft throw games like a year ago on ps4, when I would be angry at myself being incredibly harsh at myself, saying I deserve to be banned for being awful at everything. Play Attack Torb/Sym, hanzo etc [I can play these heroes with moderate-good results at the time], heroes where no matter if you are a gm smurf playing would get a report. Most of the time, either get carried through the match or random pop-off, such as getting 63 elims on Sym on Hollywood causing the enemy team to rage quit. Results may vary…
