What's really killing overwatch right now?

Would hate too what happens to OW gamers that get into a long term relationship.

Both there, doing basically the same thing, day after day, the slow realization that movies, games and tv are not like real life relationships.

Not realizing the constant pestering is pushing them away.

Them not even replying to their texts at all anymore.

Being totally unwilling to realize that their insecurities are what started this, because each time they tried to do something nice, they just got crapped on for it.

No, it must be them, it’s deff them.

Now that I am typing this, it’s kinda suspiciously 1:1 how OW has played out.

blizzard/activision are killing themselves practically. very slowly like a lobster or frog in a low simmer boil and i doubt they are gonna jump out. looks grim

Horrid balance changes, lack of content for a “sequel” that doesn’t even know if it’s gonna be released at all, recycling events with barely any changes, poor story writing since Chu left the company. The list goes on. Blizzard is literally just digging their own grave.

  • Lawsuit

  • Hero name rebrand

  • Jeff leaving (aka the father figure of OW which people nickname him)

  • OW2 delayed announcement

  • Lack of content since Echo release

  • Smurfs, boosted account buyers (on cheap sale atm), more cheaters than before. (The smurf one is old but the rest is more problematic)

  • The recent ExC after 3 months

Popular streamers no longer play the game as much or never (low Twitch viewcount)

Oh please. It’s really, really easy to push all the responsibility on the players and ignore the faults of the game design. The game makes the rules and the players follow them. Why do you think FF14 is perceived as way less toxic then WoW? Because of game design. There is nothing different here when you have very little team building in this game, allow smurfing and have no problem allowing for multiple accounts, the lack of enjoyable tanks and supports while pumping out DPS, map issues where they put sniper perches in every map and the main objectives barely have any cover.

Yes, please continue doing the same thing over and over while blaming the community. Maybe we’ll eventually get to 0-5-0 or maybe enough people leave to a rival game before they clue in.

Would that mean deleting all the new heroes/content added?

Right now, I’d say the main issue is necrosis of the playerbase. We’re doing the death spiraling thing where genuine players are leaving because there are too many smurfs and trolls, which leaves the remaining genuine players with an even higher ratio of smurfs and troll, which makes them more likely to follow suit, putting match quality in freefall.

It being a five year old game.

I’m not pushing all the responsibility on players….OP asked for what’s really killing it and I gave you my chief reason…

Blizz isn’t blameless….but all the stuff I listed is far worse than lack of content, or perceived bad balancing, matchmaking etc etc

We do far more harm to the game than blizz does….remove the stuff the player base constantly does and you’d have a pretty decent game (despite blizz’s flaws)…and I know this because that’s how I tend to approach the game….remove most of the player influence (it’s why I mostly play MH - it does most of that)…

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this game for 5 years now

I would bet that’s the toughest ELO to match because the players are so inconsistent. But also, if you have one season of experience it probably wouldn’t take much for someone to appear to be a god to you.

Those are all good and recommended things, but you also need game sense - for most people that comes with experience and honing it into instinct. That takes time. Lots of it for most people. Hard to teach per se because matches can be so dynamic. “do A when B, unless C” becomes a giant unwieldy mess of things to consciously recall.

Tell that to CSGO or league

F2p is garbage. 2cp is fine.

Competition. It’s not like overwatch exists in its own little world. People get pulled off to other games.

I’d wager it on both of these mainly. I already foresee a lot of people saying “get over it” on the first part, but the game would be a lot more fun if it was just a pleasant thing to do. Yes, you can turn off chats, leave vcs, etc. etc. but it’s a bandaid on a bullethole it feels like.
Following that, repetitive events… I doubt anyone is looking forward to SG for the 7th time next year (since I doubt OW2 will be out by then, now), much less with how they’ve changed Lucioball.

I think this is strongly to do with the reduced playerbase in OW. I’ve noticed the same thing over the last year or so, matches are FAR and away more one sided than they used to be. Which makes sense when you realize a lower playerbase means even slight changes in MMR are more pronounced with less people playing.

And with OW being abandoned for the time being Blizzard is giving zero incentive to stay, honestly best course of action currently is to stop playing OW until OW2 lands.

If most of your players tend to lean towards playing the game a certain way then it’s not the players who are at fault, it’s the game. They’ve failed to make a game that guides the player to playing how they want the game to play. I don’t see how in any capacity that is not a failure of design. Maybe it was the lack of experience with FPS games that caused this issue, particularly when you choose a brand new subgenre for your game design.

If I make a board game with set rules and 95% of the player base plays the game differently then I want them to while still operating under those set rules, how is it logical for me to go up to those players and say “hey, your playing my game wrong”.

It’s already dead. You can’t kill it again

But the biggest issues the game has in order are: DDA going haywire, player behavior is very toxic (gameplay-wise, comms not included) and no hope for a better future for the game

The first issue with DDA is horrible. Ever feel like a game is a complete stomp? That’s DDA going a bit haywire to cut your, or at least some DPS player’s, queue by a few minutes. That’s the system cutting edges during the queue process by deviating from the 50% estimated chances of win by matching higher MMR’d and lower MMR’d players in the same game. Oh you thought the system just made a mistake? Nope. No mistake. The chances of it being a “mistake” is very low. Mostly it’s just DDA’d teams with the other team getting even near 30% estimated chances of winning vs. the 70% that the opponents have which translates into 1-2 players in your team having to teamwipe the opponents multiple times in a row without a counter sweep or it’s GG. Otherwise you just get stomped

The second issue is what highlights the worst out of the game and makes the games not just very polarized, but extremely polarized. Players keep dying off cooldown without doing anything or really playing the game and never changing anything. Going in and feeding because??? who really knows ADD kicked in or they wanted to troll. Reddit Lucio’s who aren’t good at it dying constantly. Players farming priority passes on Ball/Hog. Typical stuff like that which cause games to be extremely polarized. That is because while OW in it’s game mechanics is at a stunning balance, it also causes the issue where on even grounds 5v6 is almost impossible to win, but having a feeding teammate makes it a 5v6,5 rather. And this type of behavior is all around the game because well… it’s dead so many players don’t take it seriously

The third issue is just… heroes still not being balanced around their realistic potential in the highest tiered gameplay regardless of what that hero is. Certain heroes are just outright gatekept from viability and this will 100% kill the game even when OW2 comes out. This was the biggest flaw the game had during release and it’s one of the biggest inducers of toxicity there can ever be. Play wrong hero that is bad because devs decided to make it bad? You’re in for toxicity every second game. Balance devs have been just awful in comparison to the glory that the other teams like graphic design team have managed to do over the years, carrying the game. Other issues being 5v5, bad hero redesigns, not that stunning graphic updates, the insanely late release time of OW2, nerfing tanks across the board to be the weakest role, controversies in the company, terrible leadership, sinking stocks, whatever goes into this massive downward spiral of the greed company

But the saddest part is that OW is still the best FPS game out there. That’s the real joke here

Two things namely; lack of content, and the fact that an entire role is in the dumpster right now. The balance isn’t in a sustainable long-term state and its showing.

90% of matches being dictated by what the 2 tanks on both teams feel like doing. This has been OW’s biggest problem for years.

I don’t know….How much handholding do you think is necessary?...plenty of people do seem capable of playing as intended…they’re not being forced to do anything by blizz……why cant others do so?

There’s too much blame deflection in the community…like I said…blizz is NOT blameless…but around here they’re ALWAYS “THE” guilty party
