What is the single biggest nerf in Overwatch?

Which character was beaten down the hardest in a single patch in Overwatch’s history?

Doomfist got hit by a truck in 2018

(Tho tbf his CC and ult were kinda crazy pre nerf)

Doomfist got like his entire kit gutted in one patch.

Bastion went from godlike to the single worst hero in a single patch.

That was a gloriously entertaining week, horrendous, but entertaining.

I was going to say Sym’s rework, but that would’ve required her to have been good in the first place

Probably mercy’s nerfs in jan 2018. Obviously though those were needed.

Those Hog changes in 2017 were a huge RIP

Bastion From God to trash in under 2 weeks and no amount of buffs have helped him come back from being power creeped out the game

Remember when Solider’s primary damage got nerfed from 20 to 19 back in like season 3/4 and he went from being the best dps to one of the worst?

Easily Mccree’s fan the hammer nerf

A quote :speech_balloon: from a Mccree main at the time of the nerf:

My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis; my punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself.

Hard to say. I think it was the bastion nerf to his ironclad. It went from 50% damage resistance to 20%. He went from being the meta must pick, creating the Ominic crisis meta, to being almost unplayable.

Mercy is a close 2nd. She also created her own meta after her rework, the moth meta. That meta also ended after her nerfs. But she wasn’t unplayable post those nerfs, in fact, people were still one tricking her to GM.

Once people learned how to play Doomfist he definitely needed nerfs. I don’t remember him creating his own meta that ended after his nerfs and after some practice he is still a powerful hero to play.

I think this might be the biggest one. They gutted his ult to make room for the ironclad passive too, only to nerf ironclad and leave his ult in the grooves left in the pavement by the dumpster.

Definitely D.Va, multiple times. At the end of season 3/beginning of season 4, when they gutted her armour (from 400 armour/200 hp to 200 armour/400 hp), cut her DM time, AND buffed hog to pull people close enough that the “bullet travel distance” minimum DM used to need before being able to delete something made it impossible to save teammates. Like literally impossible. Every 8 seconds (was it 6 at the time?), he just kills someone, boom, nothing you can do. This lasted for the first half of season 4 that she was basically unplayable.

Next time they gutted her was when they cut her DM after getting rid of goats, AND removed two types of knockback resistance, AND introduced a global knockback buff across the entire game, AND made sure every new hero bypassed DM.

God it’s been a hell ride maining D.Va and relearning her every season :sob:

Doomfist got nerfed 5 times in a single patch in 2018. All of them essentially gutted him and made him garbage.

Worth noting that this was the most nerfs in a single patch to a hero that got ZERO compensation. Not even Brig has gotten this.

sym infinite tp. one doesn’t simply just spike up the down time of a shorter ranged squishy hero’s all-in-one engagement, disengagement, burst-combo-enabling and utility tool i.e. core uptime tool.

And it wasn’t a simple “slap on a few extra sec” nerf, it was much worse as shown visually below:

This is obviously simplified because technically, sym nor her team is getting 100% utilitisation of tp in it’s uptime (which further adds onto the experienced down time.

like imagine if flankers had all of their mobility + sustain abilities only starting all their cd when the flanker has disengaged. That’s what infinite tp did.

and the fact that we had like 2 major tank balance patches to kill off double shields makes the problem worse, i.e.

  • shields weaker and given power elsewhere —> tanks move around more
  • tanks move around more —> teams move around more
  • teams move around more —> need to repurpose or relocate tp more often because what you should be using it for changes more often now

and obvs, you can’t move it around more often, let alone fluidly, when you now have a guaranteed 10s waiting (i.e. not having hero uptime whilst doing so kind of waiting as visually shown above) buffer to do so

and then the cherry on top is blizz doubled down on nerfing about everything else in her kit besides orbs whilst keeping infinite tp and despite the fact that sym prior to all these nerfs, was underperforming for >1yr across various metas indicating her initial individual balance (balance independent of meta) was low but they OK-ed nerfing anyways. :unamused:
