He was named after a Blizzard employee who got fired after the sexual harassment lawsuit so team 4 decided to rename the character

In lore, McCree was always a pseudonym. His birth name is Cole Cassidy.
Team 4 changed his name due to what an ex-employee of Blizzard (he was on the WoW team), Jesse McCree, is associated with.

If you want the short version, there was a massive scandal at Blizzard involving a lot of sexual misconduct, and the guy who McCree was named after was unfortunately one of em
I feel like they could have generated so much goodwill if they just named him dave…

TLDR:
Cree was named after 1 employee who supposedly did some bad SA related things, Blizzard itself literally imploded in the last year and we’re on the eve of them launching a scam version of OW2 instead of a promised sequel.
Underdeliver to the max.
He’ll always be McCree though, I have funko pops with that name, can’t exactly erase that from existence.

McCree touched Ashe’s buttler inappropriately and demanded Bob to do “something” to which Bob refused and said he only does it to Ashe. Ashe confronted McCree about this creepy behavior but he tried to bs out of his way by saying it didn’t count because he touched him with his left hand which isn’t even a real hand, but Bob being of the same material said it felt real enough and made him very uncomfortable.
McCree’s name was thus entered into the registry. Name change is his way of wiping the slate clean. Cassidy Cole is an upstanding gentleman who respects Omnic’s consent now.

Nah, his name is still Jesse McCree. New name is just bad fanfic, not canon in any way.
