They are inhumane by nature, he is not joking and you need to understand this.
This is exactly the problem, and because blizzard think the same way it’s exactly why toxicity will never go away, because the devs are just as toxic, it’s just very well hidden and a specific Dev didn’t do a very good job of hiding it.
I don’t wanna be offensive or something, but for instance if an African American uses the N word in chat, it’s almost “normal”. If someone uses it wrongly, to be offensive, it’s different…So it’s kind of difficult subject.
It’s not a difficult subject, I don’t use it and never will but it’s context in who is allow to say it and who isn’t has already been established, you just choose not to accept it based on your person and what it’s made up of, but let’s not get into that.
That said no one should be allow to say it in game, if they do it should Warrant a instant ban.
It could be very well that over reach also causes toxicity. But thats not an angle that is considered when discussing this argument.
Injustice is injustice. Merely banning someone cause “it offended someone, context be damned” is an injustice as much as someone not being punished for being an aggressive bigoted bully. And if you institute a system of ‘zero tolerance’ in an attempt to snuff out a minority, and end up punishing the larger majority for it, youll really see how toxic things can get. Particularly if this system is implemented because a very hardcore vocal minority has deemed to the silent majority what is acceptable or not.
You want to cut down on bullying and using racial slurs in a bullying sense? Thats cool. No ones gonna argue with you on it, by and large. But if your solution to said problem is a ham fisted “Ban anyone who says this thing immediately, no excuses”, people with any reasonable sense of pragmatism will chime in and start saying “No, thats way to extreme and doesnt consider a lot of things.” You will get push back.
Also have to point this out: Way to go by dehumanizing terrible people. There are no such things as monsters, just people who behave like monsters.
The irony here is if someone came in here and claimed your user name was offensive to them, because its a racial slur, would you change it?
Or would you tell them theres ‘context to it’ and for them to ‘grow thicker skin.’
Also, since you cannot understand context, let me illustrate.
Two players who are friends IRL are playing with each other. The first player does something to troll the other. The second player, laughing, calls the first “You little N-word!” The other friend laughs. Both are having a good time.
Under your policy, you should ban the second player who said the word.
Now, how about if both these players are black.
Congrats, you turned something between two players that was meant as a playful jab and no ill will into something ill willed and punished one of them. How do you think the first player is going to feel with his friend being banned because you decided that context doesnt matter and no one gets to say something cause ‘reasons.’
Youre literally interfering with other peoples lives because you disregard context and decided “No, you dont get to say things cause I said so.” All in the name of stopping those evil evil inhuman monsters.
I’d prefer an Option to just completely disable these annoying gg ez lines in general so that they just don’t show up at all when someone uses that in chat.
Maybe even a customizable Word Blacklist so you can block out the stuff you personally don’t like to hear… and since it’d be unknown to others they wouldn’t make an effort to evade the block.
Unfortunately, it’ll simply revert to (more or less) clever ways of getting the same sentiment across. Blocking certain words will do nothing to address the underlying behavior.
To clarify, Overwatch does have AI learning software to detect both text-based and voice-based abusive chat to help verify the reports they receive by players. However that being said, Blizzard has confirmed they still issue account actions by human decision based on the evidence gathered.
The only word I’d agree with is the racial slur. Anyone who says it is either an actual racist or some edgy guy from “the hood” who thinks they’re a gangster and cool because they use bad boy words.
