Unpopular Opinion: Tanks get left out with balance

Title.

Tanks are probably one of the most rapid declining role in the game. Balance around them is HORRIBLE. Reinhardt remains king after a SMALL NERF while tanks like Hammond, D.Va, Roadhog, Winston, and Orisa remain horrible. Yes, sigma is NOT bad at all. I’m sorry, it’s just… true. Anyway, these tanks are seen as a “throw pick”. If you don’t go Reinhardt your team is automatically throwing. If you don’t run, Rein/Zarya, your pretty much throwing.

This is where tank balance has gone, it’s going to nothing but utter trash . Please fix this garbage role before us tank mains leave this role and move on to support/DPS.

Just tells me they got something in mind for Tanks that requires code changes, not just adjusting a couple numbers.

Jeff did say CC and Barriers are the top priority.

Barrier tanks aren’t the only tanks.

Why don’t they say “tank changes” as in general.

They aren’t, but it’s a lot easier to convince DPS players to play offtank than it is to convince them to play BarrierTank.

And if all they succeed in doing is promoting doubleofftank, without magically making it not a throw comp, then that’s not going to help much.

They basically are in this game. There is such a ridiculous amount of burst damage in this game that any tank without a shield is flat out worthless for protecting their team.

Burst damage is the main issue for tanks. It’s why d.va and Winston are worthless, and it’s why barriers are a requirement for tanks. Unfortunately with recent patches its evident that blizzard doesn’t really see burst damage as an issue.

So I played Orisa and Sigma in Comp again for 3 days (replays included)

I mean, I’d like to see some minor buffs to most of the cast, but why are we saying that we were “left out” of an explicitly “minor, but broad, set of changes to supports and less commonly viable DPS”. We are neither supports, nor DPS, and those buffed were in a worse place than any of us.

Because if you can fix the popularity of barriertanks, then it’s relatively easy to get people to play offtank.

And because if you just make so people want to play doubleofftank more, but it’s still a throw comp, then the DPS and Healers will hate the game.

Then implement the off-tank role you wanted. But buff off-tanks and Main tanks so you can get equal balance. 1 off-tank 1 main tank.

Sure.

That would work fine. I mostly left that part off just because the concept was complicated enough as is.

But there wouldn’t be any reason you couldn’t buff offtanks.

Not likely. With forced 2-2-2, you have two tanks vs two DPS, you can’t let two tanks constantly overpower the DPS. This isn’t like before where you get your fun out of being able to hold off 4 DPS on a good day. They got neutered because two “real” tanks would squish two DPS.

Aside from Rein/Zarya, the rest of the tanks are balanced for 2-2-2. It’s just that the tanks we get out of this are not the tanks we signed up for.

Survivor bias. The ones that hated what the tanks have become already left, so you’re not going to get complaints from them. The already small tank population is still declining.

I’d argue that they’ve gone exactly the wrong direction with tanking. The hardest tank to convince DPS to play is Reinhardt because it’s such an alien playstyle to them, but they made him obligatory so anyone who’s not a hardcore Rein main can’t tank.

If Roadhog or Sigma was good, DPS would shrug and play tank, but Reinhardt they won’t touch.

There is some truth to that.

But I’d prefer to focus less on past mistakes, and more on how to get out of the hole they’ve dug themselves into.
