Theory on the Shimada’s “Magic”

Inspired by the other thread asking about if the shimadas are magic.

This is my theory on their “magic” (which isn’t magic.)

So the Shimada family have been a rich powerful crime syndicate for generations. Hanzo/Genji’s Father, wanting more protection for his sons and being inspired by the dragon tale; orders a (possibly vishkar) hard light “mechanic” to program a specific hard light “robot”. This hard light robot is the dragons Hanzo and a Genji use, and it only works on someone containing the Shimada’s Genetic Code.

Up for debate: How/Where the code/hardware is.
It’s likely their tatoos (which Genji lacks), or their weapons or both.

Not sure if this would work, because Genji does not appear to have tattoos anymore.

Frick, I thought he still had tatoos in the uprising skin but I can see I remembered wrong.

The rest of the theory holds, but I’ll have to remove that part then.

I really liked the tattoo part. Nano-technology enhanced tattoos sound awesome.

I would say your theory is generally on par with what I would say, but with some weirdly specific word choice I would disagree with.

It doesn’t have to be a hard light “robot”. The whole thing about hard light is that it is exactly that, light. There is no need to mechanize it. And it doesn’t have to be something tied to their genetics either. It could just be Hanzo’s Tattoo/Genji’s Sword that contain the technology. Or maybe its part of Hanzo’s bow as well? There is room for speculation, but i disagree on those two part.

That’s why it’s in quotation marks. It’s not really a robot but I don’t really have a better way of saying it. You could use program I guess.

I’d argue it is considering Hanzo says “Only a Shimada can control the dragon”. If it wasn’t tied to genetics and was just a hard light program anyone could use this wouldn’t make sense

As I said in the other thread, there are many ways to interpret that line.

Nanomachines. Nanomachines everywhere…

that’s true but those interpretations make less sense.

If it was accessible by everyone it would make a lot more sense for Hanzo to be angry or annoyed that the “robot assassin” stole the families technology.

I’m sorry but whilst it’s technically possible it most likely isnt

You know they had ninja training right. And one thing ninja did well was to use everything they had including technology to their advantages, ninja used some type of musket after all. So since Hanzo didn’t know he was fighting Genji he phrased it in a way that wouldn’t reveal that it’s some Shimada tech.

One thing that I find interesting about both dragons is that Hanzo’s come from his arm and into his arrow, but for Genji it seems like he’s overclocking himself and channels the dragon into his sword. Maybe it was just to make Genji look cool but heh.

Hard light would be the most probably answer right now if we are completely excluding magic. My favorite though is when people insist it’s not magic and then say it’s chi, as if that isn’t just another form of magic lol

A lot of people theorize his tattoo is somewhere on his back. Genji still has a good portion of his torso, so his dragon should be fine.

I always thought the blackwatch skin show the full extend of his body. Is there something more in the under the Torso plating?

Edit: Disregard

If he had the tattoo on his back, we would have seen it on his Blackwatch Skin.

His back is totally covered.

A lot of the ‘skin’ parts that stretch are covering what is likely delicate or scarred areas. Genji was confirmed to have both legs above the knee, his entire left arm and chest area, and his torso (which includes his back). The cream areas are protective, which he later covers most of those areas (including his intact left arm) with the plating.

Hmm… I guess I misremembered how much of his skin was exposed. A back tattoo should be possible then.

Right, in this case he really still could have a dragon tattoo there. Cool stuff learned something new.

Mhm! It’s also possible that the ‘switch’ on his blade helps him ‘summon’ the hard light dragons if the tattoo got damaged.

Hard light projectors with DNA readers hidden in their weapons.

It always appeared to me that, he had to relearn the Dragon summon stuff after his accident. It is more an impression I had then something I could source.
