The Overwatch Empowerment Cup: A community pursuit of equity, inclusion, and competitiveness

At last, OWL will look like our ladder games.

Clown stuff for real I guess.

This is not an excuse. Communication this terrible is pathetic for a AAA game developer with a live service game.

So what if it’s a lot of work to coordinate or get permissions? That’s part of the job. That’s not some extra service you’re providing, and it’s not some surprise project that’s been thrust upon you suddenly.

Blizzard is an abject, undeniable failure when it comes to communication and setting player expectations for OW. I don’t see how anyone could argue otherwise. Blizzard’s rep is in the trash, OW’s rep is in the trash, OWL’s rep is in the trash, and OW players are clearly very frustrated and angry. That’s not just something that happens randomly. That’s a thing you guys caused. Human choices at Blizzard brought about the current state of player sentiment. We didn’t just all wake up angry one day, randomly, all at once.

It’s probably the only thing they can give some insight for atm.

The reason why women are not in owl is because they are choosing not to there are women who have the potential they just don’t want to deal with people being jerks for no reason for them being women playing at the top

Or they could just go into the normal owl like we don’t need separate gender owl tournaments people just need to grow up

It’s not really a live service game, though. It certainly doesn’t have a live service business model, which really precludes it from being a live service game. It’s more Starcraft than Apex, despite what people pretend.

Can I play this game offline?

Does this game have seasonal events and time-locked items?

Did this game, for most of its lifespan, release regular content updates?

I told them as much on Reddit when it first came out and was down voted into oblivion.

I even reiterated that it was the name that is stupid and they just didn’t get it.

Fairly sure it was organized by internet “nice guys” who will likely have harrassed at least one contestant by the time it’s all done.

Did Jeff Kaplan literally tell the community that there wouldn’t be endless new heroes?

Is there a battle pass, subscription, or other regular income stream?

No?

Again, it’s not Apex. They told you it wasn’t that kind of game. Just because they went over and above doesn’t mean that it’s forever.

Tell me you don’t know the history of pro sports in America without saying you don’t know the history of pro sports in Anerica.

Meanwhile, you have the nerve to dismiss what has happened in Hong Kong and considered Taiwan “Chinese Taipei”.

Don’t give me this fake social justice crap.

Does this cup address the countless lawsuits and allegations against Blizzard for sexual misconduct int he workplace?

I can’t imagine it does, at least not directly. But just out of curiosity, what do you suggest the Overwatch team should do to support the people in the other teams at Blizzard who faced harassment?

Be open and honest about what’s going on with the culture of Blizzard and the dev team.

I hardly have the patience to wait for 2024 for Overwatch 2 at this point.

Get ratio’d.

Are you? It sure doesn’t seem like it.

Then do it.

I sure hope so because right now it feels like OW2 is a scam and a lie, and I’m fully convinced you all didn’t even start work on it in earnest until like early 2021. You need to tell people SOMETHING.

Very intriguing. Thank you for the update, AndyB. I really appreciate what you do for this community. I know it cannot be easy, bro.

Thanks AndyB for at least breaking the silence. This paired with the rumors of an upcoming beta and Ybarra’s tweet about “news” concerning Warcraft, Overwatch and Diablo caused- only speaking for myself - false hopes: That the lack of content we were used to since the announcement of Overwatch 2 and the following introducing of Echo as the last hero might finally end and there’d be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Now I will lower my expectations regarding new pieces of information about OW 2 and will likely play less Overwatch. Will definitely come back for the events to collect the skins. This is my ingame pleasure at the moment, while my main content are the short stories. I really enjoyed reading the latest chapter (German).

Last night before I went to bed I had something on my mind - BlizzCon 2018 - everyone expected news about the next Diablo game for PC - either Diablo IV or Diablo II: Resurrected. In the end, neither of them were shown but Diablo Immortal was announced. Though, it seemed to me that you - Blizzard - didn’t realize the situation correctly. You tried to lower the expectations, but stayed very vague with information. It was clear, there wouldn’t be Diablo IV, then the remaster was expected to be announced.

TL;DR

I think we’re in a similar situation right now with an already announced game might take a very important step - not only for you, but for the players aswell - an OW 2 PvP Beta - and we didn’t hear anything about it from you. Silence doesn’t make things better in this situation, it’s the opposite. When there’s no “Rumors are false. Right now, nothing is planned in this way” they are expected to be true and an announcement could be around the corner and if the silence takes place for too long, players get worried about the game. And since OW 2 caused OW to be “on hold” for almost two years now the worries have become serious.

My wishes for the future: Stop hiding the game from public. Show something, when it’s ready. But be aware parts of the community became impatient, leeching for every bit they can get. A reaction from you - either a confirmation or the opposited would have been appreciated in this situation. I still expect Overwatch 2 being your next PC and console release. Yet it seems like it’s supposed to be hidden behind Diablo IV. Why? No idea. Probably a lack of confidence about this project? I think this shouldn’t be the case. I still think that there’s not a small amount of players thinking of OW 2 as OW 2.0 - a huge update, introducing a campaign but not as a true sequel. Based on what I have seen right now I wish they were right. In that case leaving OW 1 behind could not have been an option and a step-by-step release be likely. Still hope, you’ll do that. Probably starting with an engine update. 5v5, heroes, “Push” and maps to follow step-by-step until the full release containing the PvE stuff.

But more important - I hope your management makes wise decision about making Blizzard not only a name for product quality, but also an employer talented people want to work for again.

Stay well and positive.

There actually exists women only football and tennis. But its made clear that is based on physical disadvantage between women to men, so they want to give women an opportunity to compete without looking bad.
Its not because its implied that women are getting bullied or harassed out of the sport.
