The Overwatch Empowerment Cup: A community pursuit of equity, inclusion, and competitiveness

Not the first dev/staff i see saying this lately. Don’t get me wrong, i believe you guys mean it. But it leaves the question, did something really bad happened internally? Because im starting to feel like something happened that was far beyond your control

But regardless of the case, i appreciate the determination you guys have shared (especially given how rough community perception/comments have been lately), you guys got this!

I did not claim that this study was only specifically covering video games and i left the link for everyone to look at it themselves. I’m not trying to mislead anybody here.

  • The statistics that delve specifically into online games paint a starkly different picture

Then mind sharing them with us? If I’m wrong, i’m wrong. I have no issues admitting to that if its scientifically proven. I only shared this study because it was one of the first which came up on google regarding this topic.

Regarding online gaming, i only could find this one which states

  • 53% of people who reported experiencing harassment said they were targeted for their “race, religion, ability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.”

  • 38% of women surveyed said they were harassed on the basis of their gender.

  • 35% of people surveyed who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, or queer said they were harassed on the basis of their sexual orientation.

https://www.businessinsider.com/online-harassment-in-video-games-statistics-adl-study-2019-7

But it shows no stats on harassment for men in general as a comparable metric. From this we cant figure if women do get more harassed than men.

This study does not account for the overwhelming number of women who choose to not communicate via in-game communication methods, which leads to a bit of confirmation bias

Since there are also men who decide to opt out of voice to avoid harassment, this is a factor but not one which we truly know if it tips the scales torwards women more so than men. The numbers would be up to speculation, how many of these women and men would face harassment if they decided to join voice.

  • The study also indicates that the reported instances of women being harassed online has more than doubled since 2017

Not sure why this is an issue. This would just indicate that more women are brave enough to speak up about these issues than 3 years ago. Is that unrealistic? Since the total number of women in online gaming isnt that high compared to men, a 100% increase in reports isnt actually that insane.

I would strongly encourage anyone sharing polls and statistics to avoid cherry picking only the specific blurbs that defend your viewpoint. This topic is far more complex than a single statistic.

I’m trying to adress this topic because it is more complex than men are bad and women are victims. I’d rather support inclusion and equality as a form of bringing sex/genders together and not antagonizing one and ignoring their problems as irrelevant compared to everyone else.

Sorry this is not meant to be rude, if it comes of this way. I just want a civil discussion about this.

It’s sanctioned by Blizzard, and it’s being announced and sponsored by Blizzard, so yes, Blizzard is helping to organize it. Whether it was Blizzard’s idea is largely irrelevant here.

You mean this tournament that they made a post about two days after it was over? And had no hand in organizing or any part of it except for this post?

Yeah, uh, okay.

Are you suggesting that Blizzard had zero involvement in the tournament?

They didn’t even “announce” it until after it was over. So, yes. lol. Did you even read the article?

Yes I did. Did you? They posted it on the 26th, and it started on the 26th.

They posted it on the 26th, but I think it was privated until yesterday. You can see the first replies were posted two days after.

It was posted Feb 26 on Playoverwatch . co…

So was the thread, which presumably wasn’t visible until yesterday…

That must have been some strong banter.

Andy just one thing: if the OWEC represents the values of the OW team, please push for a women’s OWL.

It’s one MASSIVE seller with a sizable amount of women playing it. Don’t they deserve a gendered e-sport for equity?

Hoping with OW2 they do steps in that direction.

Are you saying that the post on Overwatch. co also wasn’t visible until after it was over? No reason to assume that info in different places couldn’t be posted at different times, or that Blizzard backdated it.

Not definitively.

Except they weren’t. They were both posted on the 26th :slightly_smiling_face:

Wait there was an empowerment cup?

Lol, ok, so they weren’t posted AFTER the tournament was over as this person was suggesting.

I’ll try to be as civil as possible but man, I don’t think you guys can earn any trust back, what you did with OW1 was just terrible, historically terrible, the only thing that could compare would be literally shutting down the game for good

Don’t get me wrong I’ll buy OW2 and I’ll enjoy the game for what it is but trust the team? sorry but no and look I admire the people who has work on this game, a lot and I love this franchise more than I can express through words but as far as getting things done, blizzard as a whole is just bad, these past 2 months have been terrible for the game, you don’t understand how bad it is to be an OW fan in 2022 hoping for something to come out

and it’s not due to the pandemic or due to leadership changing, no, it was the decision to work on OW2 the way you guys chose, simple as that, it was a bad choice and now you have no other option but to try and reach the end

OW2 will be a different kind of monster I hope but the team will be the same who put us through this, how can we ever trust them again? how can we trust that an OW3 isn’t on the table already? you don’t communicate at all, IF and big IF we are to trust you on anything, it’s not going to come from thin air, it’ll come from being transparent or simply as I’ve said many times before, shutting up for good, close this forsaken forum and let reddit do its thing, Riot did it, they aren’t pretending like they can handle the community or even care about it, they care about making their game and their franchise as they should

Trust what exactly? is what I ask

Nope. But the forum post presumably wasn’t available for the public to see until yesterday. I feel like a broken record.

Well this thread got…interesting?

And here was me thinking the biggest problem was that this article/thread seemed to be appear after the cup had ended instead of at the start  Although it did seem to say it was written 2 days before it randomly popped up out of nowhere  weird…

Oh well, guess it doesn’t matter too much now

I appreciate you saying this but really and truthfully everyone is tired. I understand “crunch very bad” as a mindset and would never advocate for that at all, but come on? Enough truly is enough. You guys are running a “”“Professional”"" esports league on May 5th, with no proper testing done or anything of the like, this league will lack all competitive integrity. And while dropping all the new stuff at once could be hype, it is not worth sacrificing competitive integrity.

OWL should have been canceled this year so OW2 could launch first, none of this should be happening at the same time, it will be a huge mess no matter what because your own devs won’t listen to us or the pros. Some of us say to fix Brig and Baps lamp, as do the pros, and neither gets fixed. And y’all want to drop a bunch of maps, heroes, and a mode or 2 and 5v5? This is going to be a disaster honestly. Somehow the multibillion-dollar company also could not hire enough devs to make heroes and maps for us while we waited for the sequel too.

I want to believe and hope that you guys have more to say and will change your mindset and philosophy on the total and outright refusal of changing broken heroes and problems, but words mean nothing at this point. Action is the ONLY thing that is going to mean anything now so until we see that beta come to fruition and we can all play, it just means nothing.

It sucks you have to take the brunt of all this and basically PR manage the devs and their complete incompetence as well as your higher-ups.
