The Anger Around the PTR Mercy Buffs Explained

Just here to put this in; was quite common by the end of OWL. Saw it on Eichenwalde between two other teams as well (I think one was NYXL but don’t quote me on that)

May I ask, how did that match go and what was the end result in terms with were there any switching of the hero choices etc?

EDIT:
But I do appreciate the evidence DarthWinston, as you know I have nothing, but respect for you as you should already know this by now. I want to try and restrain everything just revolving around just OWL though.

/End Edit.

So because she’s unfun I should not want her to actually feel good to play, and instead I should just go play another hero.

Which I will, but playing another hero wont make Mercy’s state any better. So I don’t see the problem with giving feedback on the matter.

Because if everyone would do that, then even more match would look like a quickplay which is thrown by at least 3 people in each team.

I can answer this one, these comps were often used on maps with a lot of easy to access health packs, and they went with tanks (usually Hog, Orisa, and D.Va) that either had good self sustain or could easily get to health packs. The DPS was often something like Sombra or Bastion that could easily keep themselves up as well.

So while it was a strategy, it was very situational, and really only worked on Eichenwalde and Junkertown. There just isn’t enough healing otherwise. It works fine when it is played on a map where it makes sense, but it sucks everywhere else.

orisa-dva-hog-widow-hanzo-mercy was the meta in OWL before mercy nerf. for the playoffs. it was the final straw that forced them to nerf her HPS.

I said healing in general is OP right now.

Mercy can keep up, the team has to play conservative around ranged DPS. its what she was designed for.

she should not be healing brawl, or dive.

your thing about ‘pure healer’… so what? she has damage boost, which equates to moira/ana’s minimal damage. it’s the same principle.

mercy is very low risk compared to Ana.

for those two heroes to be balanced (mercy/ana) risk and reward has to be considered

I don’t recall; it happened multiple times and was almost complete mirror matches (both teams solohealing Mercy on triple tank). The one I can actually speak for sort of was that Eichenwalde game that went almost the entirety of the first leg of the payload from first point to castle entrance without major swaps. I switched off after the cap bc to be honest I was grossed out by it. I’ll check my screenshot folder.

My point kind of is though if that’s optimal pro strategy there’s still something wrong

It was also run on Dorado without Sombra as an off-healer.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that most people play the heroes they find fun. It is, after all, a video game meant for enjoyment. They even have very different play style heroes that fulfill the same general task. I love playing zenyatta and Moira. I like Winston zarya twin and orisa. I don’t complain that Rein isn’t fun to play, I just usually don’t play him. This seems incredibly simple to me, what am I missing?

I forgot about that one, it sort of works on A but breaks down on B because there’s too much high ground.

Also should mention that Widow and Hanzo are also popular in this comp because Mercy has great synergy with them.

That is the thing though… that is why I find running Mercy with Triple Tank (normally the tanks who can self-sustain themselves) was uncommon as it can work, like I admitted above, but it was not seen outside a particular team composition.

This is what and where I was getting at. Running mercy solo with three tanks was very situational. I am also talking about running this outside OWL as well.

I’m not trying to be disingenuous or anything; it was partially because of the double snipes.
D.Va is a very heal-dependent tank nowadays though, so that also interested me about it.

they also played it on Dorado and Volskaya. AKA 4 out of 5 maps that were in play.

Orisa has no self sustain and cant get to health packs? The dps was almost always Widow hanzo or pharah

why lie? we all saw it

I would not recommend it outside of OWL at all. It puts huge pressure on both your Mercy (to keep everyone up) and on your tank like (Orisa/Hog need to consistently pull off the Ball n’ Chain, which rarely works on the ladder, and protect Mercy all at the same time). The Mercy also needs to be protected to go for essentially any rez she can, which in turn puts even more pressure on both the Mercy and the tanks. Running it on the ladder without a six stack is probably not the greatest idea. It can work with very coordinated teams (Hence OWL) but it needs huge coordination.

I’d like to add that if it wasn’t situational (i.e. Mercy’s healing was so strong she could easy heal 3 tanks), then wouldn’t we expect to see Mercy still solo heal, just with two tanks?

With two tanks, there is another DPS slot, making Transcendence to counter more relevant than it is with snipe/tritank

it was not situational. it was meta in OWL. people ran it frequently above diamond, where everyone is meta conscious

What you missing is this: You cannot always be Mario, you gotta play Luigi sometimes. Dont you want to make Luigi feel more entertaining in those situations?

Mercy will try to heal the Orisa during Fortify if she can.

I’m not saying those were uncommon picks per se, but DPS like Sombra (and in the case of J-Town, Bastion) were used as well.

In a later comment I rephrased it and put in Widow and Hanzo. I typed the first one in a rush and missed some stuff.

everything you said was untrue, so…

What if you’re just a vocal minority though?

For example, there are people out there who appreciate mercy and old Sym as accessible heroes without ridiculous mechanical requirements. Why should your opinion of fun trump theirs? Mercy play rewards positioning like almost no other character. Also the depth of using dmg boost vs healing is important as well. Lots of people like mercy!
