SNIPERS: A Nightmare for Developers and Players

Sure your boss is thrilled … I hope you only post on your breaks!

There’s like a hundred different forum posts to go through on my 30 min break, I don’t have time to watch a 30 min video… if the OP can’t be bothered to give insight to the video then I cant be bothered to watch it. End of story.

Yet in TF2, that doesn’t matter if he’s good enough.

that was because literally everyone had a similar ttk as a sniper - sure the sniper takes just 1 hit, but an assault rifle would only take a few bodyshots, and a shotgun just one.

you’re probably right about that for some games. never thought about that still i think halo 2 is one of the first games to introduce the overshield. snipers was a way to bypass that with a headshot

She has her mine and her SMG. Add to that the fact you can also body shot for like 100 damages and she has a lot of option when it comes to defending herself at close range.

this video might also be relevant:

Players that tested this say that the removal of sniper makes the game significantly less frustrating according to the video, and as an Open Queue enjoyer myself on overwatch - a gamemode with significantly less prevalance of snipers due to the tendency of players to pick tanks (which widow isnt very strong against) I have to agree

yeah
I mean in halo (is halo an arena shooter?) the sniper was definitely a power item, and it was an annoying one, shotguns you could stay away from and the grav hammer…well it could lose to shotguns rather easily

Because target audience of games did change.

In the past, it used to be mostly “sweaty” types, so no one would complain about sniper, if only out of fear to be seen as “weakling”.

One shot kills are eventual final stage of evolution of any FPS player, that is trying to improve. Since you can’t kill any faster, than with 1 shot, and player’s goal is to kill faster and with more efficiency.

But over time, focus shifted on more fun and less sweat, and snipers became that “antifun” factor we know today.

Makes spy pretty much useless tho.

I’ve tested it myself in a competitive setting. Spy pretty much has nothing to do because everyone else is too good at spychecking.

Snipers were fine when you had a 2nd tank.

In 5v5 snipers just don’t work: either you can’t do jack about them on maps with long sightlines, or their range is nerfed and they are no longer viable.

boop arent fun to play against on well like at all so guess lets nerf boops more. that the logic people use for widow.

but it was

not just nano people have a problem with his base kit even tho its fair

but it took skill and you lost a gun in the fight

shes like bastion punishes over aggressive players

turrets are the number one thing that kills the largest player base

not really good anas just one shot combo you to death rein can be almost unkillable if played well just like widow.

Sure, why not? The part you failed to quote in my post explains why, go back and read it.

ya still doesn’t make sense for all those metas i listed all those metas where made by heros other then snipers

this may work to some extent in low rank (since SMG Widow also works there) but as soon as you get into the mid or even high ranks this is no longer the case.
The only chance you have is a headshot with the sniper shot and that is the closer the opponent is connected with an exponentially increasing risk, since Widow is practically standing still in the scope and has a very large critbox for a DPS.
against a tracer, genji or sombra who know what they are doing, you hardly have a chance.

The solution is easy, all that has to be done is to sub categorize portions associated with different parts of the head. Make it fatal if it hits the front temporal lobe. Make it near fatal if it hits an earlobe. Take into consideration the angle of trajectory, if it’s off by so much it’s near fatal. But not fatal. Not all headshots can kill in real life. A bullet in the jaw can be survived unlike a bullet in the cerebral cortex. Basically not all headshots kill make a gradient for damage on the head hit box

I take calls, so while waiting for incoming calls i just browser the web if ive finished my task for the day.

Lemme repeat. At high levels, an unchecked sniper will destroy your entire team in seconds. The way you counter that is shields or diving them. All of those metas fit under those 2 categories.

This has been a problem for even the TF2 Devs back in 2009, Robin Walker has talked about how aggravating it can be dealing with a Sniper character in a blog post, I think it gives alot of insight why people hate Snipers like Widowmaker and (somewhat) Hanzo.

The second (reason) was whether you felt you were actually engaged with the person who killed you. Dying to someone you weren’t engaged with, especially when you were already engaged with someone else, was aggravating. Even worse was dying to someone who you couldn’t have engaged with, even if you chose to. In that case, you’re very unlikely to believe you could have done anything differently to survive.

In particular, the second (reason) seemed to be the root cause of the hatred of Snipers. You’re often killed by them while you’re engaged with an enemy in the foreground, and most of the time the Sniper is so far away it feels like you couldn’t have dealt with him even if you didn’t have enemies nearby. In fact, the Sniper’s goal is to create that relationship: he specifically wants to fight enemies outside their engagement range, because that’s his primary advantage.

Genji insta-delete you, so sure, it doesn’t work that well on genji.
But mine should be decent against tracer and Sombra.
