SNIPERS: A Nightmare for Developers and Players

Snipers tend to be fine in larger games like COD or Battlefield. But a good sniper can EASILY 1v4 in many FPS games.

At least it’s not as bad as CSGO where you can 1tap to the body.

Like in real life Snipers impact on the battle field is a force multiplier. It’s not that they can kill people from half a mile away, it’s the fear they can. Also taking out Officers and other important targets.

The smaller the teams, the more impact such an attack has. In OW however with only 5 people per team, any death is basically a team wipe or reset, especially if it’s the tank. That snipers can do that before the enemy team can even fully engage is the big issue.

Add to that map design in recent years has been bad. Huge lines of sight, little to no cover if your on the objective of pushing the cart. The removal of the 2nd tank, the nerfs to shields etc. Every thing done lately has made snipers stronger as all their counters were nerfed or removed on top of map design favoring them heavily.

Open queue, like everything else in the arcade, is totally irrelevant to balance. Was the 150hp nerf necessary? YES, especially for Deathmatch. Were there better solutions? Absolutely. how about a -20% hp nerf? JQ would have 360 (+60) Hp while Roadhog would have 560 (+10) Hp.

but is that a problem with widow when the devs forget her in the map design process even though she is the 3rd hero that ever saw the light of day? (1st was Tracer, 2nd was Reaper)

eh, especially in Battleroyales like Pubg, EFT or Warzone you are mostly alone (or in a DUO/ 4manSquad) in a 64 or more player Deathmatch with no respawns, the maps are partly huge with correspondingly large areas for snipers and you only have one life. Dying is far more devastating in the games than in Overwatch, and snipers are the most popular/effective weapon in these games.
Maps in PS2, Battlefield or COD also have very good areas for snipers and sniperrifles themselves can be just as effective as a shotgun in close combat.

Narcissism. All there is to it really. People can not any situation put the blame on themselves and seeing other people achieve something they can not instead of praising them for it they resent them.

See, this is why console is superior. No, really! Snipers (unless they cheat with XIM or whatever) are handicapped by controllers. Even with aim correction on controllers, snipers are slightly less irksome on console, especially in gold/plat. Like I always say, ConsoleMasterRace!

i still dont have a clue how i played with a controller back then. i cant even look at one now. i even try to play old games on a keyboard. even platform games

i envy people who are good with both. my controller skills really regressed (i think world of warcraft started my downfall hehe)

And in Valorant they’re still an issue.

OP players who literally sandbag every round to save up for an OP are becoming more common again…

In cs they’re not as big of one, but that’s because you have items you can buy to deal with them(flash, smokes, and grenades can all zone and help you deal)

LOL I tried playing OW2 with kb+m on a PC and ended up building an Excel spreadsheet with pivot tables. I just could not do it - I’ve been using a controller since NES days.

Fair enough. I still mention it specifically as there is a competitive mode for it. And the game was originally built is no role queue.

Technically no. However it is the reality we live in now and considering that it is Widow specifically causing this over literally any other character, it is currently a problem with Widow. I don’t think the maps would be fantastic or anything without her one shotting cross map though.

While it isn’t her fault, it is essentially how we have to treat it at this stage.

Fair enough. I’ve not been a battle royale player personally, so I can’t really opine on that one. I’ll take your word for it.

Yes, and they’ve also been the subject of a lot of community discussion and annoyance over them iirc (do correct me if I’m wrong). Well COD and Battlefield that is. Currently blanking on what PS2 stands for, clarifying since PS2 may be an exception if I could for the life of me remember what that stands for.

The guy took a long time to do a thesis on why he hates Snipers, but a shooter without snipers… It’s not a Shooter.

Anyway, good luck to those who stay, a Noob Friendly meta is coming

My dude. Shooters without snipers aren’t some mythical creature like a Unicorn. They exist.

Ughh you forum people… I (like many other users) either don’t want to watch a video or are too busy. Posting a video and saying nothing about it isn’t a post, it’s lazy af get real OP.

Just watch the video, your the lazy one.

Bro I’m at work… I can’t.

Im also at work

I read the subtiles

Ah, yes, the problem with Overwatch is that it’s being played by it’s intended audience…

Overwatch was literally made to be the Super Smash Bros of FPS: a game aimed at players with no prior experience with the genre, aren’t interested in games that only become fun after investing hundreds of hours to gitgud, and generally just want a casual multiplayer game where you can goof around with friends and blow off steam. Yes, there’s a high skill ceiling for players who look for it, but being accessible is Overwatch’s true top priority.

If you want a playerbase of hardcore FPS veterans, what the heck are you doing here?

It’s like going to a game of wheelchair basketball and complaining about a lack of jump shots.

Snipers and oneshots have always been annoying, no doubt there.

What has changed is the mentality of players, many turned into crybabies.

In addition to that, the way Overwatch works it’s even more frustrating because of forced roles.

In CS, you simply pick the AWP yourself to counter the sniper, or you go and take a different route. But in Overwatch, you can’t, unless you’re playing DPS.
You have to trust your DPS to do better and if they can’t you’ve lost, gg.

true, but it’s a competitive joke. I always did all placements in OW1, including OQ. while I was in Tank mid plat, DPS low plat and Support mid Gold I was in OQ Mid Diamond. The really frightening thing about it was that I could have been T500 with it! As Diamond!
That says a lot about how popular/serious open queue ranked is. and I strongly suspect that not much has changed in OW2.

Eh, the original game had no hero limits at all. herolimits were only introduced on November 15, 2016, almost half a year after the release. Role Queue came in 2019 and now we have 5v5 instead of 6v6.

I’m not a BR player either, as I absolutely don’t like being chased by a zone all the time. I do like watching others do it though, friends of mine play a lot of Apex and Fortnite and my favorite youtubers play a lot of COD, CS:GO, PUBG and Battlefield. and most of the time snipers are always involved.

Yes, but not because they do what they are supposed to do well (sniping) but because they are also really strong in close range combat thanks to Quickscope and Bodyoneshots.

PS2 means Planet Side 2. Is a scifi MMO FPS from 2012 where you fight for map control with hundreds of other players divided into 4 factions. also with everything from infantry, quad bikes, small vehicles, tanks to planes/fighters and boats and even flying aircraft carriers.
Current record (2022): 1530 players simultaneously on a single map/server. (there are 3 maps/servers with 64km² each)
And you can play as a Sniper with a Cloaking device. its not the best way to play and not the most annoying. Thats the Quad with the Shotgun an Cloaking device.

you got corrupted by the keyboard warriors hehe :3

This is a very interesting point that you have. In my limited experience, i think:

Time changes. Game design philosophy also changes as gaming becomes more popular. Nowadays game is less and less about challenging and more about immediately gratification regardless of player’s input. Developers want to spoonfeed as much as possible to carter to the lower denominators.

Case study is Elden Ring vs Forbidden West last year. Western developers were baffled with how little assist elden ring offers to the players, and some thought it was an extremely bad design. It just showcases how different the modern and the past philosophies.
