It’s not sustainable. There’s always going to be a most popular role and a least popular role. One role is always going to have long queue times. I don’t believe it’s avoidable.
Another issue is with the new comp system, ranks are being soft reset at the beginning of every season. This system works with games like Apex and valorant where you have one rank. With role queue this means you’re going to have to grind 3 ranks every season just to get back to where you were. This seems really grindy and it’s unlikely people are going to continue grinding 3 ranks every season. What will likely end up happening is people just start playing one role cause that’s all they have time for. This will make queue times even worse.
My suggestion: Replace role queue with draft pick
Everyone has one rank. To queue for comp you select a primary role and a secondary role. You are more likely to get your primary role, but not guaranteed. It you don’t get it you will get your secondary role. You will never get the role you don’t select so you can always opt out of one role.
Once matched you enter the draft phase where you’ll see the map and mode you’re playing and both teams are given their role assignments. Team 1 tank picks first, then team 2 tank picks. Because team 2 tank gets to counter pick, both of team 2’s dps now pick so team 1 dps can counter pick them. Team 1 support pick > team 2 support pick > team 2 support pick > team one support pick. A fair amount of chances to counter pick the enemy.
As the match begins everyone is locked into their heroes for the first minute or two then you can switch freely within your role. This system solves not only queue time problems but match start problems of blind picking only to find out you’re being hard countered so you get rolled then switch which gives your team a bad start for something out of your control.

so it’s like league of legends?
Yessir. Just thought I’d explain it in case people haven’t played it.
Well it’s a nice idea, and I appreciate you explaining for people that haven’t played it, but…
…how would it solve the support problem?
Majority of players will choose tank as primary and dps as the secondary role and not support, or they’ll pick dps as primary and tank as secondary and not support…?
Maybe if they queue support, their next game they get guaranteed their primary pick?

Why not change role queue so that at a minimum you’d have to pick 2 roles? A primary and a secondary choice. Due to popularity, if you pick dps for primary you might only be stuck playing your secondary choice though. And selecting all 3 roles just results in support. You know what, never mind. This idea was dumb.
its impossible now, with tank being this oppressive
Well what this system does is it doesn’t allow people to queue for one role. Everybody is forced to be a little more flexible and pick a secondary role. You’re right that as of right now, most people would choose to opt out of support but not everyone. As long as there’s more people putting that support in their secondary, it will help. It may not be the ultimate solution but it will help.
While I do like the idea of having only one rank and not having to grind all three roles individually… I mean, it just kind of makes sense tho.
All three roles play very differently. You can have the best accuracy in the world, but still be awful at every Tank because the gamesense to hold a team together and manage the frontline and soaking up attention/cooldowns is just an entirely different skill you don’t need on DPS for example.
And just because you’re good on Tank, doesn’t mean you’ll be good at Support, because knowing when to focus heal/damage/use utility/pocket a win condition ally is entirely different also.

6v6 without the Role Lock would be perfectly possible to balance.
now 5v5, with Role Lock AND Super Tanks became an impossible task now.
Understand this: They would need to backpedal on not only one, but TWO! balance decisions. These devs are very proud and never admit mistake, right now this is impossible to happen.
Maybe deepdown they know they dug themselves in a hole with Supertanks and 5v5, but it is too late.
Oh God no. I am NOT getting filled in OW. I already am forced to play tank and DPS more than I’d like with the quest system.

No thanks. Go play OQ instead.

If one thing OQ in OW2 and arcade has told us is that role queue is needed. And especially with OW2 there is zero chance it will ever go away. Play it if you want but I cant bare it.

This whole post is irrelevant…
you DO NOT HAVE TO PLAY ROLE QUEUE.
Open QUEUE is and always will be available. Go play there.

There’s a cesspool of tank stacking just one click away from role queue feel free to circle that drain if you see fit, but keep that over there.

If they swapped to this method of queuing i’d 100% quit OW forever. This isn’t LoL… if you want LoL picking, go play LoL.

Yeah…Open Queue has always been a meme to me every sine RQ was implemented. I’d sometimes go play OQ just to warm up or for the memes. Doubt many ppl take it seriously especially now with all the tank stacking nonsense.
Well surely blizz has data in that they can look at to see if most people vary greatly in skill between roles. In my anecdotal experience with 2700 overwatch hours and looking at many profiles, I believe it’s pretty common for people to rank similarly between roles. I’ve often seen profiles with all 3 roles one rank, and many that only vary a rank or two tops. It’s rare to see something like a diamond tank that’s silver dps. Game sense is a skill that transfers to all roles. And don’t forget these people can also opt out of their worst role so if there is a big role skill gap somewhere they can choose to not play that role in comp.
They need to change something though, cause I’ll tell you straight up I’m not grinding 3 ranks if they’re doing soft resets every season lol and I doubt many people would. I’m going to limit my rank play to tank only. I dread seeing what queue times turn into if they go this route.
Good. Id much rather 2 minutes extra than to lose elo for free because I have 4 genji mains on my team.
Competitive Integrity > Queue Times.
Draft pick isn’t sustainable in OW2 since some heroes were designed to always lose to other heroes no matter what, rock paper scissors.

You mean goats queue? No thanks.
What do you mean No thanks? So you don’t want Role Queue and you don’t want Open Queue…What’s your point exactly here?
