Role Queue Alternative?
So like, talking to the players youāve joined with to decide which role to select?
Is this the same as me viewing your play time and telling you to queue up as said hero?

Interesting, although I would bump the tank maximum to 4.
This is why we need systems to encourage swapping. A bonus for Exp/SR if you played a different role from the one you played (spent the majority of time on) last game. How about Quests? A system that could push players to play 10 games as tank or support. Maybe even hero specific to get you to play your lesser played heroes and roles. Block 50,000 damage as a tank or heal 50,000 health for support and etc.
4 tanks is a viable strategy, but itās also one that I think most people agree feels terrible when itās meta or used against you.
The core of the idea can be tweaked. If Blizzard wanted to use different numbers for the minimum or maximum of a specific class then that would be up to them. But this gives them another nob to turn. If people are complaining about quad tank, but all the tanks feel balanced, just make it so you can only pick 3.
In this situation, I also force at least 1 DPS and only 1 healer canāt keep up 4 tanks either. So, it wouldnāt be valid unless we also set the DPS minimum to 0, but I donāt really want a 0 DPS meta either. Thatās just my personal opinion.
Itās about time this game got daily quests. That would rock!
That said, I feel like this is more of a quickplay solution. Than a comp solution.
Wait nevermind, it doesnāt have 4DPS
I think it probably depends on your rank to a degree. The higher up the ladder you are, the less bad team comps affect you. But overall, having some general rules in place would be less restrictive than role queue which I think the devs are at least entertaining. And I donāt know if role queue would be as popular of an idea if we had something like this in place.
It seems really solid regardless of QP or comp. Itās less restrictive than role Q (less exploitable too) and encourages structure. This could really help the lower tiers and hopefully reduce toxicity in the higher tiers.
So one issue I run into with this is that 1 healer, 2 tank, 3DPS in comp would not work well.
Although maybe it would be decent in quickplay if you got a Mercy, who has enough self-heal and self-peel to survive without an offhealer. And maybe a Roadhog that can take care of his own heals. And possibly a Soldier that can help out a bit on heals.
Thoughts? LMAFO doesnt solve anythingā¦
ranked is going to be bad as long is matchmaking is built to keep everyone around a 50% win rateā¦ as long as that exists there is no saving rankedā¦ as its the root cause of the majority of the problems to begin with
I think it probably depends on which healer and which tanks, like you say. But also consider that with some structure around how many of each group can be picked that it would potentially affect balance decisions.
Would Mercy have been knocked down to 50 hps if this was in place? Would the Brig nerfs have been necessary since she mostly works in 3/3 lineups? Is it possible that weād uncover problem heroes a bit easier and maybe fix the right issues more frequently?
I guess the numbers I would go for are:
DPS 3max,0min
Tank 4max,1min
Healer 3max,1min
Although really if you simplified that, it would be 3dps-max,1healer-min,1tank-min
At least it could improve match quality. Thatās more than enough of a positive in my mind.
Iāve been saying this for awhile. In a 2-2-2 context a lot of the OP heroes feel very weak. Without role stacking tanks feel terrible and supports only create unkillable targets when you stack 3 of them on a team.
This doesnāt solve Goats though. You need a system like Luminās. You need a min of 2 tanks, 1 DPS and 1 healer to have a solid base comp. With a max of 3 DPS, 3 tanks and 2 supports we keep tank metas from getting out of control. Weād still have triple DPS with solo heal but with two tanks thatās somewhat workable.
I can think of a number of issues with this:
This would only play into the hands of instapickers/players with good internet or SSDs, regardless of how good they actually are on the hero they pick.
As long as all DPS/ all tanks/all healers comps are able to win matches, Blizz will never restrict hero picks based on roles.
Not every hero within a role is a good pick all the time. Having one or two healers and then calling it a day is not how this game works, where counters are a thing.
Not everyone despises comps like GOATS etc. and in situations like a last push or hold, some unconventional comps may be vital for a win.
Yes, it would. But this also assumes you arenāt willing to cooperate with each other. Cooperation wins games. We want to encourage teamwork and swapping. Insta-locking is bad no matter what system we are using.
I donāt think an all tanks comp is viable. An all DPS comp is viable in quick play or bronze, but not Masters or GM. And ironically, the best of these would be an all healer comp. That can actually be quite scary surprisingly.
I donāt think this matters. In high level play, 2/2/2 is played 51% of the time even with Goats being āmetaā. Before Goats, it was 81% of the time. In most odd comps, the role that gets left out is actually DPS. There are 16 DPS, so at least 1 of them is going to be viable at any time right? There has never been a meta comp with fewer than 2 tanks or 1 support.
Almost everyoneā¦ maybe a few people like it. But most people hate it. More people despise Goats than Dive which I didnāt think was possible.
Ah yes, letās see a 3 DPS instalock.
But wait, thereās 2 more DPS mains on the team. They go Ana and Moira and prefer to shoot enemies rather than heal allies.
How is this worse from not having this system in place? 5 instalock DPS is infinitely worse because I can at least report the Ana and Moira for gameplay sabotage if they refuse to heal.
I suppose you can. But do it enough and you probably get banned yourself for false reports.
Playing a support that can do damage is not using the support wrong. And if they donāt heal, they can go with the excuse of āI donāt know how to heal, I only know how to play DPS, but this system doesnāt allow me to, so Iāll just do damage with this hero I HAD to pickā
It literally gives people an excuse to do their worst.
Not to mention it forces people with a slower connection into consistent tank or support roles because theyāre never fast enough to play DPS. If they donāt like those roles, it will drive them away from the game.
Eh, Iād probably limit it to just one support and tank mandatory per match.
You can have viable QP comps with one tank or support, but not really with zero.
Just throw up a message saying āNot enough tanks/supports - if one is not selected, one member of the team will be picked to fill this roleā. Then, if the match starts, the player with the least time on that role is stuck on a random tank/support and they can only switch between heroes in that role, that game.
This is a good idea but I think blizz would havs to add more tanks and support heroes to the game first. But overall I like the idea of forcing peoole to be flexible. As a fellow flex/mei/rein main I really wish Mƶre people would try to play different Heroes and roles since this game has so much diversity in character design and playing different heroes is (if youād ask me) the best way to play this game. One of the few things Blizzard has done right over the past years is marketing this as a hero-shooter where counterpicking and team-comps is a big part of it.
