"Render Device Lost" Fix for RTX

Recently found a fix for me, here it is maybe it will would for someone else.

The 08, fix worked for me.

I still have this problem after like , getting a new windows like 3 times. I have tried the MB solution on youtube , or changing my overwatch to compatibility to windows 7. None seems to work, one making overwatch last longer, but after a second try it does it over again, crash really quick.

I have tried this too, doesn’t work. :stuck_out_tongue:

WARNING: Do NOT use the registry fix. Timeout Detection and Recovery delay should not be modified in most cases, as that is Windows’ built in protection to prevent damage of your hardware or windows-level crashes. Longer TDR delays open the window for actually breaking your graphics card.

If you’re using this as a work around, I advise reversing it.

Hi, I have a similar setup as yours except I have 16gb ram instead of 32. Do you mind if I ask you what’s your fps? I am having trouble with fps drops and wonder if I should get 32gb ram instead. Thanks.

so for the last week i have played with all the setting trying to pinpoint the problem. I think it’s the rendering scale setting? When i set this to auto @ 141% no crashes (at least so far). If i use epic settings @ 150% it randomly crashes right after the choose ur hero screen. anyone else get this?

as a side note i have a friend with a gtx 970 ti that is also having the same issue. anyone with an amd card having these issues?

Did the renaming of overwatch.exe to overwatchtest.exe and have been playing the last week + without a single “rendering device lost” crash (or any other crash), so definitely some auto-optimization in Nvidia’s handling of Overwatch is to blame. Before I would get at least one crash a day if i played more than a few hours. Fingers crossed it stays this way until Blizzard/Nvidia can iron out a fix but i’ll update if something does go awry. PC’s specs below if anyone has a similar build/similar issue.

Windows 10 Pro x64 build 1809
EVGA RTX 2070 XC (no overclock other than the factory)
Ryzen 2700x
Asus X470-I
2x8gb 3200mhz gskill dimms (DOCP’d at 3200 in bios)
samsung NVME boot drive/3.5 SSD’s, and a 4tb seagate spinning drive

After updating drivers and downloading nvidaiprofileinspector and deleting the profiles for overwatch; i’m now able to play from the blizzard laucher. To me this confirms that the Nvidia created profile absolutely is causing the problem.

I’ve been having this issue the whole week. I have a 1080ti tho. most of the time the game crashes, my whole computer freezes up. I get the redering device lost message sometimes, but most of the time my computer freezes up and i have to restart. I’m running:
AMD Ryzen 1700- not overclocked
16gb of ram
EVGA 1080ti FTW 3
Asrock taichi x370
Windows 10 pro Version 1803 Build 17134.799

I have all latest drivers and updates. This is so frustrating. I can’t play overwatch at all. Ive crashed so many times mid-game that the game boots up with a " you will be penalized if you keep leaving matches early"

I just did the rename “fix” and as soon as I came back, I played a successful QP just to test it out, then joined Comp. Only to have it happen again. Renaming Overwatch.exe just causes it to generate a new exe with the original name. Didn’t change anything for me except I crashed faster.

i7-8700K 3.70GHZ 12MB Intel Smart Cache LGA1151 (Coffee Lake)
32GB DDR4-2400MHZ
GeForce® RTX 2080 8GB GDDR6 (Turing)
Z370 HD3 ATX USB 3.1 SATA3 1 M.2 CROSSFIRE
Windows 10 Home (64-bit)

Just happened to me after just one QP play.

Don’t forget to write a report to this email. I don’t know why this Kaldraydis reply is not at the top of the post, I remembered it but it was lost in this massive amount of replies…

Blizzard/Nvidia, you need to do something.

“RENDER DEVICE LOST” has been happening on my side for almost every game and it has gotten to a point that you guys banned me from competitive after kicking me out of the game due to this issue which i have told your staff before.
all you guys could have done was listen and see if you can make your game go a bit higher for the game, but no… i want you to look into my account and get this fixed for me

mainly i reinstall the game all the time it starts acting up, but it doesn’t really help due to the fact the teams on overwatch thinks this is a joke and that no one would get “Render Device Lost” and said i was joking or lying about it, but since there is a topic about this… i have to say they banned my gaming to comp very much because of this error that is happening

Hello this issue is happening to me too, i dropped from 3500 :D,
this error actually appeared since 1 or 2 weeks ago; i noticed that the game crashes mainly in fights where there are pretty much "interactions"or i can say that the graphic card is getting stressed. Anyway sometimes it is pretty random.
msi rtx 2060 oc.

i just got a new graphic card because of the fact i am a video editor and sadly this is what they reply me when i told them to have a look at the issue…

Hey there, Rinae.

Thanks for bearing with us while we checked into this for you. Tech Specialist Evinderminus, here. I did some digging into your situation and wanted to leave some information on what’s going on with your crash problems with Overwatch, and what we’re able to do about all this. I absolutely understand this is frustrating for both you and your teammates when you’re trying to get a match in and push rank, so I want to get you set up to hopefully get this resolved once and for all. Keep in mind that this Rendering Device Lost error has a lot of causes, which is why there’s no guaranteed fix in those forums you mentioned. We have to troubleshoot this one by one, except for that one known bug mentioned in the thread you linked.

I get that it’s upsetting to be penalized when something feels like it’s out of your control, so I want to talk about how the penalty system works. When something like this happens, we aren’t able to remove a suspension or restore any lost skill rating, as it does affect the other players in the match. We also aren’t able to see the difference between an intentional disconnect and an unintentional one, such as one caused by a crash (it looks the same to the server), so we have to treat them all equally. Because of the potential for dodging certain players or teams, even leaving before hero select is over can also cause these penalties. For a bit more information on why the penalty system works the way it does, one of our developers actually did a big post on this.

Of course if you’ve got feedback for how the system itself works, we’re happy to hear it. We don’t believe it’s perfect just yet, and if you have any ideas for how we can better balance your experience with that of your fellow players, we’re happy to hear it. The best place to provide this would be at the Competitive Discussion Forums, since the developers and Quality Assurance teams tend to look over those forums for player insight.

Now, we’re absolutely happy to try to help troubleshoot the crashing, especially if these tend to happen from time to time. We’re going to need a couple different pieces of information to try to help you find the source of the problem. If you can start another ticket with all this, we’ll be able to more effectively help you find out why this is happening and hopefully prevent it in the future.

  1. What you’ve already tried to troubleshoot the problem (we don’t want to double up on things you’ve already done after all)
  2. A fresh copy of your MSInfo/DXDiag file so we have information that’s as up to date as possible. If you can generate this right after you come back from a crash, this is very helpful.
  3. Any error messages (including error codes) that you see when the crash happens. These REALLY help narrow things down.

If you attach this information to your next ticket, we can use it to potentially pinpoint any issues and help you find the problem. In the mean time, I sincerely hope that this experience with Blizzard Entertainment has been informative, if not helpful. May you continue to enjoy your stay in our world!

hm… right very helpful and answered…

This is a total cop-out… own your own issues… we are customers that have paid for games or in game items… passing the buck is a crap answer

Deleting my Overwatch profile with the inspector helped. Haven’t seen the issue again. Thanks!

Nvidia Inspector helped me too. Almost 6h playing and no problem.

But I still play the game on medium settings, I don’t dare to change it… What graphic setting do you use after using Nvidia Inspector/Deleting OW profile?

i must be the most unlucky person because none of these fixes are working for me, including the profileinspector and removing the overwatch profiles

Can you confirm if this is the right URL to download the inspector tool?
https: //nvidiaprofileinspector. com /download-nvidia-profile-inspector/

Thanks!

Posted in another thread and they directed me here. Here’s my info:

I’ve been having the same issue for months. Happened with both my GTX 1070 and RTX 2080. It’s getting pretty old.

Fresh install, repaired, minimal boot, updated all drivers, disabled a lot of my audio stuff (since I found a fault previously that said it could be audio related). Don’t have anything running that doesn’t need to be running (during game - I even close the launcher). Short of fully re-installing the OS, I’m at a loss.

Perhaps you can assist. I’m sure there’s something wrong somewhere.

Oh, also, I ran SFC and it did find violations which it repaired, now it’s coming back clean (ran it three times since).

All crashes are pretty sporadic and I’m afraid to play comp because of it.
