Its so obvious this game needs its 6th player back it’s ridiculous. Stomp or be stomped is not entertaining on either side.
Nope. There are going to be “reworks” till the end of the world.
agree 100%. except, that requires blizzard to admit their HUGE change that was going to bring overwatch back to the glory days was actually a complete failure
Yep, 2-2-2 will always be the best format.
Stomps are happening more because of not only counter-swapping being more effective since there is only a single tank variable due to 1 tank per team, but also because having space to move in with only 1 tank on your team is a lot more inconsistent than having 2 tanks; which means that 1 team is likely to move better with their tank by chance, meaning 1 team has protection and the other doesn’t.
DPS picks against tanks are more polarizing in 5v5. Like if the enemy picks Roadhog, just go Widowmaker and delete his team since he cannot do anything to help them. Roadhog already was a bad tank design for 6v6, but for 5v5 is only makes the issue worse.
And all that makes trivial the tank synergy issue in comparacing.
Lots of people loved tank synergies in 6v6.
Literally the only “tank synergy issue” we had in 2-2-2 was Orisa + Sigma, but that could have been solved by nerfing Fortify & Kinetic Grasp so that they are vulnerable to rush and dive comps closing the distance. The devs literally went the opposite route in 2019 by nerfing their barriers and buffing Fortify & Kinetic Grasp, lol.
Sure their barriers could’ve been toned down slightly, but the devs over-nerfed their barriers when the issue was Fortify + Kinetic Grasp giving them too much sustain up close against the other 2 styles of team comps (dive and brawl), while having an advantage from range at the same time.
Not to mention, Orisa Sigma wasn’t even that powerful by the end of OW1, and after the shield nerfs it was only really played around GM.
It was never entertaining according to posts dating back to 2018 when there was 6v6.
But we tend to ignore little details that sink our arguments, like the fact “stomp or be stomped” has been around for a lot longer than 5v5 has.
they didnt get rid of 1 tank cause of balancing or double shield or anything ppl can come up with, they dropped one tank for 1 simple reason, QUEUE TIMES. that simple, everything has been sacrificed for the all mighty Q times, quality of matches, matchmaking, no time after games, game cards, etc. included.
And here we go again. Looks like it did nothing on that front.
Also the official excuse was the tanks being “noisy” and “visual clutter” (ironic)
Not entirely correct. My DPS queue times were 15+ minutes in OW2, now they’re steadily under 3 minutes in the past year. Support queues are down by half, as well.
I love it; gave me the ability to play DPS without hard locking in Open Queue.
Maybe they slow down with those at Overwatch 4
Exactly, lmao. You only need to look at the top 500 leaderboard on tank…Masters4 players can be top 500 now, which means there are barely any tanks around. That’s also because tank is awfully unfun to play in Overwatch 2, so even fewer players than before want to queue for the role. Removing one tank did something else though, it made it easier to host more lobbies with cheaper server farms.
That’s it…not because of queue times, balance issues, or some other reason related to the way the game is meant to be played. The real reason is MONEY, cash, dinero, cheddar, Benjamins, because bean counters at Blizzard wanted to keep costs down as the game was supposed to grow larger from the transition to f2p.
That is because they removed any matchmaking whatsoever. This could have been done in OW1 and the result would have been similar.

That is because they removed any matchmaking whatsoever.
That’s just plainly not true.

This could have been done in OW1 and the result would have been similar.
You can’t conjure up tank players with loose matchmaking.
What are you talking about? If the game needs a majority of its roster to be reworked just to work, then there’s no way it’s not balanced, right?
Homogenisation of existing heroes and the release of more homogenous heroes until OW 3, in which we go 4v4 and gigabuff each support for some god forsaken reason.
Honestly 6v6 wasn’t very functional with the duo tank either, and we’re simply “forgetting” about it because we have no way to replicate that gameplay in arcade. In my opinion, the developers had a good intuition in introducing the passives of the 3 classes, something that would certainly never have worked in 6v6. We simply face “different problems” today.
I think there are few real solutions: continue to make the meta more cyclical (which happened anyway with 6v6). But we can also imagine other types of solutions.
- definitely 6v6 in arcade: people don’t really realize how problematic it was to balance it without tanks doing too much in the game;
- continue experimenting with class passives, I feel they still have a margin of variability;
- In my opinion they should experiment with “automatic modifiers” in open queue, the mode treated worst in balancing. I imagine for example a modifier that as soon as you have +1 on a role (2 tank, 3 dps or 3 support) the game automatically applies a nerf to that specific hero class. It’s obviously a long shot, but I’d like to imagine it.
5 v 5 is in a bad state. There are SOOOO many problems. I think they need to get rid of the tank role immediately and just play 4v4.
Sigh, Blizzard is so stupid for removing 6v6 and not improving on it,
Overwatch has been unbalanced since day one. 6v6 was just as bad with goats and hanzo 2.0 grav dragon meta
