Random fps drops (big topic)

Here is what I have happen.I HAVE made sure to do this on a FRESh operating system installation, and the power supply PLUGGED in to an ACTIVE power supply testing station, which allows the board to run in conjunction to show that NO voltages are changing. As we all know, the 5.5v power rails on power supplies BURN out and go bad, OFTEN, which can lead to some serious issues. WHich was NOT the case at all here.

I have overwatch set to “high priority” on my system after I launch the game. I have EVERYTHING closed down, I can even run Steam client in the background as well, and the issues are no better or less. SO let’s do a Play by play here, to actively help show you what I go through.

So I open a Quickplay match, the game begins and finds me a match. So here is a play by play for me.

1st minute. Match is found. Character selection screen is loaded, I chose my character. Route 66, defense.

FPS: 60fps - Temp 31C, RTT 42ms

2nd minute. We are waiting in the spawn room, people are throwing stuff around, and chatting it up.

FPS: 220FPS - Temp 30C, RTT 41ms

3rd Minute: We are ALL rushing out of the gates to get settup for an attack.

FPS 190-210FPS - Temp 31C, Rtt 42ms

4th minute: We are ALL attacking now the other team, pharah is blasting away at me, and I am doing mid-air shots with widowmaker, and genji is now after me, explosions are everywhere, and healing is being spammed heavy by moira and the mercy. Both teams are actively engaged in combat and it is VERY intense.

FPS: 194 FPS, Temp 32C, RTT, 38ms

5th Minute: I just took another death and I am now running from the spawn room again. Nobody is around outside from First spawn room.

FPS: 110 FPS, Temp 29C , RTT 41ms

6th minute: We are ALL hammering away at each other, big explosions are everywhere moiras from both teams healing, orisas attacking, im in the middle of a nasty fire fight. It’s extremely intense.

FPS: 130 FPS, Temps 32C, Rtt 42ms

7th minute: The other team is now regrouping and we are setting up for the next incoming attack. Nobody is around, and we are in a temporary rest. NO ACTION is occuring at this point in time.

FPS 71 , Temps 30C, Rtt 41ms (graphics now are beginning to look grainy, suttering and slightly digitized. Even though there is NO immediate action occuring.

8th minute. The other team is now fully engage, and I am being chased all over the map, everyone is just hammering at each other as hard as they can. I’ now seeing frame rates fluctuating very heavy, and I am getting “no register shots”

FPS : 67-107 FPS going up and down, Temps 31C, Rtt 42ms

The match concludes and the game is over. We held our grounds and it was a win.

I start my next match and the SAME exact patterns occur at the same exact rate, rinse and repeat. This happens in Comp and in Quick Play for me.

Heya Dasaries,

Thanks for providing that info. I checked out your description and your DXDiag, and I see a possible problem here. The biggest thing that jumps out at me is that you’re still on the extremely old Windows 10 build after that PC reformat. Let’s make sure to update to the most recent Fall Creator’s Update because windows did a TON of optimizations for our games after that build and there were also a large volume of security updates/.net framework updates/etc.

There’s a bunch of information missing from this export as well, so if that alone doesn’t fix it let’s do another export and make sure to catch all the data from the dxdiag. I’m doubtful this alone will be the fix, but as you know as IT you don’t skip the basics if you don’t want to kick yourself later.

I’d also like to see screenshots of your netgraph (ctrl+shift+N to bring that up in game) during the periods of very low FPS. It’d also help to have screenshots of a HWMonitor test. Run HWMonitor while playing and once you get to the period of the match where you’re having uncharacteristically low FPS, snag screenshots of all the data there.

  1. Maximize the HWMonitor window and expand all the nodes on the left
  2. Scroll all the way up
  3. Take a screenshot with the Print Screen (prtscn) key
  4. Open up the program Paint and press ctrl+v to paste in the test
  5. Crop the screen if you want to only show the test, then save it as Test1.JPG
  6. Scroll all the way down, then repeat steps 3-5.

Once you’ve got those screenshots, upload them somewhere like tinypic/imgur and link them here and we’ll see what we can see with all those details.

Drakuloth,

OKay sounds good, I will start that later this evening and through the week! I will see what kind of information I can get recorded.

With Windows 10 updates, it’s difficult to pick and chose now what updates worked with what. I see LOTS of updates have caused other programs to break and stop working. While others played nicely. I remember back in the day when we could use a patch system through a server to decide what patches to throw out to the rest of the computers on a network, such as security patches, as well as OS patches. Some things like widows media player updates caused more problems than they were worth trying to solve

Do you have a patch per se’ that you would recommend out of those? I know that I’ve done a full system patch before, and things got way out of hand. (programs hanging up), loss of stability etc. So i’ve done lots of reverting and pain staking hours of registry entriese removed, to get the system back to an “ideal” means of use. Windows 10 is flaky, and I am thankful I do NOT have to program for it! I feel bad for anyone that develops games because they have to work through all of that stuff. It’s no easy task! But hopefully we can come to a conclusion to at least solve the issue I am having.

Thank you!

In general, we always recommend that you have the most up to date version of windows to ensure you’ve got all the necessary framework updates. The biggest things we saw causing problems with our games throughout various patches were xbox game bar/DVR, fullscreen optimizations, and a bug with our games being unable to detect your resolution correctly resulting in crashes on startup. We’ve worked with Microsoft on each of them and they’ve employed fixes for some of them, some of which are hit and miss depending on exactly which build you end up on. There are also some investigations that some third party apps with overlays may be causing some of the problems too. We’re not sure if they’ve been 100% worked out or not with recent builds because other parties may need to get involved in the troubleshooting process here.

It’s quite possible these also impact other games so if you do fully update and find you have continued issues, check these options out.

Xbox game DVR steps at this link.

Fullscreen optimizations:

  1. Right click the game .exe file which you’re having problems with and go to properties
  2. On the Compatibility tab check the option to Disable Fullscreen Optimizations
  3. Hit apply and ok

Last up, to fix the resolution issue, just change the resolution of your monitor to something smaller from your Display Settings, confirm the change, change it back, confirm the change, then reset the game settings to have it redetect your resolution.

Okay, sounds great! I will give that a try and a day or two to see IF it was the solution! (just to be certain!). I did try to copy the full DXDiag and it says “links aren’t allowed in the posting” So I dont know exactly where in that I should stop copying that!

Thank you!

If it gives that error, it may just be something that appears like a link. You can also upload that and link that here. Eventually you’ll post enough relevant stuff on the forums that the forum determines you can post links automatically, but that backend system is automated to prevent abuse by hackers/spammers and the like.

yeah without a doubt on those spammers!

So while waiting for those other links we talked about in the other thread - I noticed you’ve got razer hardware. There’ve been some reports of issues with the synapse/chroma sdk software for Overwatch lately. You could also try temporarily uninstalling those to see if it remedies the issue.

Try playing without the kill feed turned on, I saw on another thread that it’s the kill feed that is bugged right now.

I tested it myself in quick play for 6 games and didn’t have any mayor issues with the game, it run smoothly (about 99% of the time).

with the killfeed, is this the constant recording process or just the playbacks? THANK YOU!

The kill feed is the thing in the top right corner telling you who killed who in game. I don’t know why its the kill feed exactly but apparently it has a bug in it right now (don’t know the details myself). I thought I’ve tried everything so I tried to play without the kill feed on and to my surprise the game worked, for those 6 games I played the game run like it a year ago.

I think there’s might be more too the problem then the kill feed as there was a 10-15 second hiccup where I lagged out, but overall I didn’t have a problem with the game running smoothly (now to kind a fix for team comps LOL)

What I am looking for, is , is this the kill feed recording the game prior to each death, which I could see this being an overlap issue?> I will give this a try though.

I don’t know to be honest, I mean its possible because of it does because of the play of the game feature. You’ll have to ask someone at Blizzard that question.

@ Drakuloth, @ LazyWRabbit,. I want to thank you for your time in being here and helping with exploring this issues. Yeah I just did all of this. No luck. :frowning: It didn’t fix anything. But it did remove the distraction of watching the kill-feed  .

  • I’ve done the whole dedicated process thing (fixes it slightly) 10%, and fixes input lag by considerable margins.

  • adjustment of the pagefile usage, (improves it more) 4%

  • I have Nvidia dialed in for “MAXIMUM performance” for this game.

  • Setting native refresh rate higher when launching the game. instead of just setting the drivers to “use the appplication’s maximum allowed frame-rate”. Doesn’t change it.

All of the practices listed above have smoothed OUT the problem some, but it’s still most certainly there and it affects my gameplay.

I know the card isn’t bad, because I’ve ran 4 different cards and all of them had the same issues.

GTX 1050, GTX 1060, GTX 1060 SSC, GTX 1060 FTW+

Hardware monitor doesn’t show me anything that is “out of tolerance” I just cant see any correlation between anything on the graph and what’s happening in-game. This pc rig is fully decked out in cooling. I have koolance blocks on my CPU and a full coverage block on my GPU. The radiator is 360mm in length and I have one of those Lang D5 pumps, so it flows alot of coolant through there. Yes, the fans are all spinning

I would first look at a hard drive issue myself, but putting this on Solid State or Spindle HDD isn’t changing much other than drastically slow load-times from the hard drive.

@Drakuloth. I currently do not use synapse to run my keyboard. When I used Razer software, I had extreme lag and ghosting with their mice and keyboard. I sent the mouse packing, and purchased a BenQ . That is around roughly the first thing I had started looking into back in November. It can be hard to maneuver at times  . With the keyboard I just have it running as a normal keyboard and do not use the fancy features. It’s got those ultra-responsive orange switches, that are silent and not “clicky”, makes a world of difference in gaming!

I was thinking drop-box for files on my gameplay, but they have a subscription fee, and youtube im kinda iffy on. OBS really amplifies the frame-drops and kinda depicts my reactions to the fullest extend of how I experience the game during those split second decisions. I run ultra smooth, but the gameplay shows otherwise. However you can see when I take shots on widowmaker, the amount of “misses” i get and NO-register shots come across. I recorded the game I think at around 30 or 60fps. So i am just trying to find a “Safe” file upload site for file sharing that wont virus up my computer or put my stuff at risk.

Important: I also did notice this, that when I have OBS running. MY Overwatch game NEVER peaks above 130FPS (in game) and when i do NOT have OBS running, I get 220FPS from the start. This MIGHT be something to help provide information here and complete the missing piece to this puzzle?

I did do the Ctrl+shift+N, and is there a way to change the opacity of this? I know that I couldn’t even see half of whomever was on screen to target them very easily.

I would suggest looking up “kephrii” on youtube. (the bigtime widowmaker player). You should see his FPS meter bounce around like the way it does and I am getting the same EXACT issues he appears to have. He doesn’t announce it, and he seams to work around it quite well. But he also gets “no reg” shots too from what I have seen. He’s running a GTX1080, so he has more “overhead” from those deep FPS dips. I EVEN saw one of them Overwatch guys playing widowmaker and get a no-reg shot from an apparent frame-dip. Fleta perhaps was the person playing? (opening week). Temple of Anubis.

I wont be around too much this early week to troubleshoot more due to Ag. Work. (fun). But I think i will try to pick up on this roughly late Wednesday, Thursday again and check into this thread to see what everybody has to say. I look forward to answers. Someone will also have to reply to this thread, or it won’t allow me to continue to post, due to the current posting rules. SO I may end up having to open a ticket. OH no!

Thank you for your assistance!! Have a good week!

-Dasaries.

Accept it finally that your games performance is broken. It is a FACT! No personal offense.

I’m sorry to hear that mate, maybe its because I’m on console so maybe the system runs differently their or maybe it was just luck LOL. Hope your issues get sorted soon.

Dasaries,

There’s a lot here and I’m not going to comment directly on other players’ performance because again, there are a large number of different things that could cause individual issues. For now, I’m going to need the data requested earlier to proceed much further. Can you get those HWMonitor screenshots after a few FPS dips just so I can see what your PC’s hardware is actually up to?

However, this jumps out at me:

We’ve seen situations where Nvidia’s settings will fight our in game settings trying to perform the same task. You might try defaulting the settings for Overwatch in your Nvidia control panel if you haven’t yet. Typically when people do that it helps stabilize things.

In addition to this:

While you’re welcome to stream, we don’t directly support streaming software because their overlays and video capture features will by design access your graphics drivers. If there’s a conflict between us and the streaming software, that could cause this. I’ll keep it in mind in case some of the hardware monitor screenshots show anything glaring, but part of the fix may be ‘don’t use OBS’.

Greetings Drakuloth. I did get a screenshot of this problem and was able to record it in game, with Ctrl-shift-N. I had to play a bit slower paced than what I normally do and was able to capture the exact time when this problem occurred. BINGO, I got it!

There is a green text that says “16ms” and it has a yellow line that stays very steady with peaks and valleys. Then all of the sudden it produces this HUGE White box which reaches all the way up to the top. So here are the values that I see on screen.

SIM 7.7 /9.8 / 285.9 (The 285 value is NOT normal and peaks for a moment)
IND 20.00 / 8.4 /42.1ms
LAT 0.0 / 3.8 / 17.9ms
PNG 35 /44.2 / 51.7 / 80.5ms
16ms
CMDQ 0.0 / 8.4 / 13.0
PPS in ~64.3
PPS OUT ~56.8
LOSS IN ~0.0%
Loss OUT ~0.0%

Dasaries,

Those are only instantaneous data points and unfortunately don’t help much for this issue which is very much a ‘random spikes’ type of issue. I do need the screenshots of the netgraph and HWMonitor to proceed much from here.

I’ve had some big stuff going on here in my life. Nothing good. But yeah I will try to get some settup time to see where we can get the data recorded from HW monitor. I know that they are starting to charge money for some of their different software packages or so.

I recall in the past, when I ran hardware monitor, it was slugging my computer a bit during the software package running, which skews results too. I have to carefully make sure I do, this I am getting accurate details and see what happens.

Thank you,

-Das
