Text chat is mostly to say GGs or to ask the enemy tank if they want to mirror match. Comms are quiet, but still used to shot-call. Nobody tilts if someone feeds. Even if there is a clear diff, most of us will quietly avoid and go next.
I think most of us understand that flaming our team or spamming text chat wastes time. Furthermore, having patience is often the key to victory, even in the face of defeat. As a Sym player since launch, well done and thank you.
I have noticed less since the scoreboard came out. Thereās less reason for people to bicker over golds or call someone a feeder when everyone can see it, itās just pointing out the obvious. Plus it keeps people who would have been toxic before quiet if they have bad stats.
But I think these past few months, itās more just fear of getting actioned. Iām not gonna risk Blizz banning my entire bloodline just to call someone a poopyhead.
In my experience, Overwatch was never as toxic as people said it was. Thatās not to say there wasnāt toxicity or A-hole players, but it was clearly a step down from things like my Call of Duty or The Last of Us multiplayer days.
Thatās one of the reasons I donāt like the idea of removing the text chat from OW; a better idea would be to make it opt in or opt out for those who donāt want to see it.
I think a lot of people start with a defensive mindset, so if a teammate calls them out (which I donāt recommend) no matter how gently you think you do it, itās met with toxicity. Call out your own misplays before blaming a teammate and youāll see less toxicity. Stop thinking you know what your teammate should have done in any given scenario.
I donāt think many players play hoping to get into arguments but weāre so used to being screamed at or made fun of that weāre quick to react negatively to anything.
The most toxic players Iāve ever gamed with are immediate family. I had to remind them to keep the language civil since my youngster games in the same room >_<
Yeah the toxicity in this community isnāt any thing particularly egregious compared to any other game, probably less.
The reaction by the players to perceived toxicity however is off the charts, so any benign comment can be misconstrued as a personal attack so it ends up as a report and potentially a suspension. Been this way for years.
People report for GG because the person happens to win well f me, Iāve said GG at the end of every game tfc, company of heroes, dawn of war, c&c generals, even csgo. But it took overwatch players to take GG to a personal attack.
I think a lot of people underestimate how popular, or at least how liked this game was. Sony was working on a multiplayer live service version of The Last of Us factions, but then they cancelled it and released Concord instead. What a fumble.
Iāve only had to fill out a few reports for racist/sexist/homophobic/anti-Semitic comments in the last month or so. Itās a pretty nice change of pace.
When I played comp, silver on RQ and gold on OQ. (I could not advance past these no matter how hard I tried). Horrendously toxic pretty much all the time, enemy team spamming EZ on match end, teammates flaming, telling people to off themselves, demanding others report, etc.
Now I only play QP and while itās not as toxic, itās still pretty toxic. āEZā is typed a lot at match end, tbagging is common if someone gets a ārevenge killā, killing a dps and them immediately swapping to Sombra to hunt you down and spawn kill you the rest of the match because you hurt their ego is common, teammate flaming still happens, etc.
