Panic at the Disco

Everyone panic and post on the forums!

P.S. SC2 went F2P and it wasn’t predatory. I see something similar with OW2. But if I’m wrong I won’t be surprised.

I’m not panicking personally, I’m just waiting to see what develops. I’m nervous, looking at Diablo Immortal, and I think something like Fortnite sure does eat a lot of money so I understand why they’d want to go free to play. I’m trying to reserve judgment but I can’t help worrying over how bad the monetization will be. I’d kind of like if it did something like Fortnite did where founders can earn credits to buy skins like we always have without paying.

Well, this is the new blizzard. Diablo immortal came just recently and it is full with predatory monetization.

That’s my take as well. OW has always been very fair with their in game purchases, but it’s really early to say. People are just being passionate about the decision and saying a bunch of things without any proof. We’ll know more on the 16th.

And regarding Diablo Immortal, all mobile F2P games are pretty bad when it comes to their monetization. I am surprised that people would think differently about this.

StarCraft 2 went f2p at a very different time in blizzard’s history

Hearthstone, and diablo immortal are F2P and extremely predatory.

While that may be true, OW has never had predatory purchases. Every time there was, the community voiced it’s displeasure. And it got fixed.

I still have faith that the community will do the same thing. And as I said before, it doesn’t surprise me that they keep trying.

I have noticed the entire landscape becoming more predatory over time however, I mean Diablo 3 was not a mobile game and yet it launched with the predatory and intrusive real money auction house and even Overwatch itself did a lot to popularize the lootbox in “triple A” titles so it’s not like they’ve never experimented with monetization in their major releases.

Overwatch 1 is not Overwatch 2. They want people to buy the PvE, probably a battle pass, skins, and judging by hearthstone/diablo immortal you can pay to speed up your battle pass, specific characters (I promise, they will make you pay for characters at some point).

There is a reason why indie games are just absolutely taking a giant :poop: on all these gaming company nows.

Sadly, I have noticed this as well. I personally don’t mind monetization as long as it’s cosmetic only. Game development is not cheap, however P2W is absolutely unacceptable and shouldn’t be a thing.

Do you have proof of a battle pass? Do you think that just because they do it in one game, they’ll do it in another? The current outrage on the forums suggest that they the community is organized enough to get this fixed.

Believe me, I don’t like the direction this is going but it can easily be changed. It has worked before and can work again.

Literally every other F2P FPS does it. Overwatch is trying so hard to copy other FPS games in OW2 instead of being itself it isn’t funny.

My guess? We’re looking at a quarterly to 4 month battle pass with play to earn cosmetics (skins, weapon skins, sprays, trinkets, voice lines, etc.). You’ll probably earn points in the battle pass to buy the next pass or other cosmetics in a shop. The shop will probably have a cash option.

The battle pass might also be how they restrict comp play, requiring a battle pass to access it and similar modes.

Just my two cents.

My guess is you will pay 50 cents for each log in and and hourly rate and be billed each month.

I totally expect them to announce it as part of a new subscription service. It can be just like WoW!

That wouldn’t really be “free to play” though would it? Unless it was like “Yeah toooootally free for the first three and a half hours a week.” Then they pair that with like 4 hour events, lol. I shouldn’t give them any ideas.

But yeah, I tend to find that most monetization in f2p games is a bit more devious than that. They try to obfuscate what you’re paying in some fashion, for instance, by using virtual currencies that don’t neatly align to their real world monetary values.

I am joking clearly.
