OWL Didn’t Kill Overwatch, We Did

Yes.

People say this stuff all the time. Then you go over to the SMITE forums and read the same thing again. And then someone says it on the R6 subreddit. Then on LOL reddit.

So, yes.

Seen all of these in equal amounts in other games. Except for entitlement. That is strangely unique to Overwatch. Never before have I seen so many people at low tiers thinking they are justified in demanding Nerfs, or thinking that they know more Pros and that pros are somehow ruining the game because their free ticket to Diamond is being nerfed.

Yeah, this is unfortunate. I can understand false bans because there are so many reports for so many players, but the fact that pretty much no appeal ever gets approved even when the ban was unjustified is… It’s pretty bad.

Believe me, some people aren’t that forgiving. Many people hold Blizzard’s lack of communication in contempt. However, I think most people are very happy with this new patch coming soon.

Been saying this for just about a year now…the games biggest issue is not game issues (which it does have)…it’s people issues

The community, OWL, and the devs, and activision. That’s whats killing this game. Yes this is one of the most toxic communities ever, but the devs are no better, and activison……

well you know lol

Thers enough blame to go around.

  1. Developing a game based on sheer teamwork and handing absolute freedom out to the general online gamer is one of the reasons this place is toxic.

  2. Extremely slow balance updates only strengthen and spread toxicity.

  3. Allowing one tricking which is literally against the sole premise of the game, not only makes one tricks face too much heat but makes people focus their toxicity on them

  4. Some people will never be satisfied no matter what

  5. Online gaming is always chaotic due to the fact its not real life, people are reckless, selfish, rude and dont care.

Everyone’s had their own input in the games downturn, you need rules, you need proper punishments, you need structure. Just as with everything that goes on in the world. Absolute freedom is never a good idea and people will always abuse it.

I’d honestly struggle to name any other game where having one toxic person on your team has such a profound effect on your chances, and yet provides no means of removing them.

OW is a toxic player’s paradise.

MOBAs. Long games with no vote to kick option. Not even a way to leave the game yourself. If they decide to go AFK or feed, that’s it. You’ve lost.

Rainbow Six Siege. There’s a vote to kick option in this game, but it’s disabled in ranked. In Casual it gets disabled when either team is on match point. This means your teammate can kill you, down you, destroy your gadgets. Put holes where you don’t want holes, reinforce walls where you do want holes, or even call out your position to the enemy via the match chat. And there’s not a thing you can do about any of it.

It’s worth noting that if they fully kill too many teammates in the game, then they’ll automatically get kicked, but when they’re left with so many other troll options, they don’t need to do that.

Although the game is more dead than the first King of England, Evolve is worth a mention. The game is specifically designed and balanced around 4 distinct roles vs 1. If any one of the four runs off alone, or refuses to do their role correctly, then you haven’t got a chance. Not even a little one. Also, nothing you can do to combat it.

Everything you said up to this point was true.

And you basically invalidated your whole post with that comment.

You pointed out everything everyone was upset about, and it all stems to Blizzard, and OWL.

With exception that people are just clowns in this community. That’s the only fault this community has at this point.

Exactly. The game draws players in with the promise of playing a team shooter, but a lot of the vital roles for a successful team comp require no shooting whatsoever.
It gets people irritated from the start because they aren’t playing the game they wanted to play, then naturally they turn on each other.

Honestly this game is designed like it doesn’t take into account human nature at all.

Well at least it’s good to know that Blizz aren’t the only developer prone to horrible game design. Also seems like a good idea to give MOBAs and R6S a miss… not that I was ever going to play a MOBA in any case.

Yeah, as much as I love Siege, I couldn’t recommend it to someone who is hoping for a relaxing experience. Ubisoft Devs are desperately trying to resolve some of those toxicity issues (and they have made team killing punishments way harsher) but its hard because players can barely tow the line and so avoid a ban, but still negatively impact a game. So, the Devs aren’t making a huge amount of progress in that regard.

It isn’t just the community, the developers. How many other FPS have so many niche characters/avatars? TOO MANY, people don’t know what to play to counter something.

I still play out of boredom more than anything else.

Levels, awards for most kills etc etc, all participation awards and no real incentive to WIN.

For Honor is doing great same as Overwatch, where are you getting your information?

Those have been my thoughts since the beginning as well. Blizz keeps trying to force people to play to their vision, but blizz’s vision has been getting worse for some time now. This is the result.

Blizzard focusing large part of attention on OWL is what killed this game

And their balance doesn’t matter to ladder players who can’t play heroes as optimally or as a proper team. The changes they make do not deter people playing what they want.

OP, i guess you’re right in the blind chicken finding a corn sort of way. Almost every mp game with frequent balance patches/heavy focus on balance that i’ve played eventually messed with the core design to the point of making it a buggier and worse gaming experience than where it started. OW was certainly speeding full throttle towards that cliff but the devs actually slowed it down a ton and while they might be too proud to admit mistakes, their actions tell me they’ve learned some hard lessons.

There’s no special dev arrogance or some particularly awful toxicity absent in other games.

Those bad feels are there because Overwatch is the kind of game you start to hate before you quit. So you either accept this or you try a bit of distance for a while. Your call.

But don’t put it all on the community. And don’t declare doom just because you’re sick of the game.

Imagine blaming the near death of a game that never had any serious pro scene on pro players.
