Here’s a really simple concept. If the devs seem to have issue solving Matchmaking without an EXE file patch in April. Perhaps they should just change the inputs to the algorithm instead.
With the key focus just generally being “Keep Masters/GM” players away from the “PlatAndBelow” players.
Basically this adds additional MMR multipliers above 3000SR equivalent MMR. And then feeds that data into the existing matchmaker code we already have.
Rather than doing a “one size fits all” ELO search range across all ELO skill tier divisions. This allows them to customize the search ranges by skill tier division. Without big changes to their algorithm.
The problem with that concept is not so great population in GM. So they would go back to 10+ minutes queue times and cry again to devs that this is unacceptable.
Just listen to GMs praising the changes to MM so they can get games in 2-3 minutes… They don’t care they are against diamonds since they are the ones that do the stomping… It is a mentality issue of most GMs
Edit: Ok, I have to correct one thing here. I shouldn’t say ‘most GMs’ I should say ‘some GMs’. So let me rephrase that. It is mentality issue of some GM players.
Dafran is not alone. I can bet one monopoly $ that there are more GMs out there that are happy with this version of MM.
I am not sure what you mean? If they raise the queue times then complaints will arise. This is inevitable…
And to be clear, I am in agreement that GM and Diamonds do not belong in the same lobby. Same with Diamonds and Golds… But the problem is that devs listen to GM CC and they are all vocal about queue times. If they will go to dumpster again there will be backlash from them. I am solve this issue without raising their queue times… Unless we will introduce bots to their games.
A tiny percentage of the playerbase is in GM and of the pool of GM players, at any given moment some of them will be:
Offline
Already matched into a game
In a mode other than Competitive
So, let’s say that GM is 1% of the playerbase. At any given time, only 10% of the GM playerbase might be queued for a game. That’s a very small pool of players, even when you consider that there are more people playing OW2 than there were playing OW1.
Flats said he’d rather short queues than perfect match quality, but he still recognizes this is too far to speed and too little matchmaking. There’s a middleground.
What if only halfway through diamond you can run into masters. And only in masters can you play grand masters.
Of course he said that, because he’s always going to be the one punching down. If he was getting q’d into one sided stomps against him every time, that’s just as bad for streams and he wouldn’t want those fast q times either.
In OW1 I would get top500 (or silvers) on my Diamond team every now and then because I liked to play early morning (before work). But no one complained because we know that’s just how it is at odd times.
Whenever it happened in ‘prime time’ people hated it. But it only happened like once every 3 months for me (including GM players, and only when q’d as tank).
If they can’t get the q’s correct with decent matchmaking with 1 less person per team, OW2 is a completely failed project and will need a full reboot. OW3 (called just OW of course) with new daddy MS here we come.
I’m barely GM, usually Masters 1 or GM5 support. If matches were created with equal ranks for roles on both teams, I’d be happy regardless of what rank the lobby was. If the lobby is all Diamond 2 players, except for me and one enemy support who are both Masters 1, that sounds like a win for the matchmaker.
I don’t watch OW streamers, but wouldn’t it make more sense for them to put lobbies together for specific streams instead of just queuing? Or is that too much work for those guys and they just want to put everything on random queues?
Qs wont be 10+ minutes for GM players for a while. As a GM player myself, I enjoy short qs but I enjoy the whole lobby also being GM when im Sub-100 in T500. I dont think I or the master players in my games have as much fun then playing in their own elo.
That is all nice on paper… But what about if there is a T500 Widowmaker in the lobby, and D2 players don’t know how to shut them down? That can create miserable experience for every one else in the lobby, since D2 players would know how to deal with D2 Widowmaker, not T500 one.
And yes, it is a skill issue. But that is why you should not put high ranked players with lower ones (even if both teams have a high ranked player on the same role).
You mean with this solution that is presented here in this topic or with the MM as it is now?
Good. But not every GM will take that trade. CC want short queues (for obvious reasons) and they are the ones that keep nagging at devs… And they don’t care if the lobby is balanced, or if the lower players in lobby have fun. They just look at themselves and their experience.
They’re already doing everything they think is relevant to identifying someone’s skill level. The constant adjustments they’re making lately are because they just dramatically changed how the matchmaker works at S3 launch. But the general concept of what MMR means hasn’t changed.
That won’t solve the issue. If you make needed SR lower to be GM and Diamonds are GMs now, on paper it would look balanced. but the discrepancy in skill will be clear between players.
With the solution presented. When i Q in GM and get a 20 second Q I don’t feel optimistic about game quality at all.
Well the content creators just need to suffer for the health of the game. It might be annoying for them to watch tik tok on stream for a few minutes while they Q or god-forbid talk to chat.
Also a fair amount of popular CCs keep complaining about the match makers (rightfully) so It’s not like it’ll be war with all the content creators VS blizzard.
