OW1 vs OW2 Philosophy

Overwatch 1 (aka the OG)

  • Everyone is a winner
  • Even if you lose, you win (XP and free Loot Boxes, Endorsements)
  • If you keep playing you might get a free lucky skin
  • The characters are funny and upbeat
  • The game is Casual-friendly
  • Grinding is optional
  • Pay money to skip the grind
  • Community is friendly and welcoming
  • You can play any hero you want
  • Skins are a sign of dedication to the game

Overwatch 2

  • Everyone is a loser
  • Even if you win, you lose (time, money, rank, sanity)
  • If you keep playing, you get to pay more money
  • The characters are bitter and rude
  • The game hates Casuals
  • Grinding is mandatory (or else you will miss out, FOMO is king)
  • Pay money to grind more
  • Community is toxic and will report you for anything in chat
  • You can play the current META hero if you buy the Battle Pass or you can get used to losing
  • Skins are a sign you have a loose wallet

The new skins are actually pretty good!

I think that Overwatch 2 is an improvement over the original in many ways…

For example playing Reinhart feels really fun right now!

But it would be cool if they kept both games open!

The biggest improvement for me is that I can play on my Mac via crossover which we couldn’t do before!

I mean you get exp still for losing. And you still get point from dailies and weeklies regardless if you win or loss.

You don’t, you keep playing you get heroes for free.

Cough Cough time limited skins that have random chances of dropping to keep you grinding to you get about 20 boxes or so. In which case you get a 1/8 chance to get the legendary skin you actually want.

Not making enough money to be worthwhile to continue updating

Making enough money to continue updating the game, and allows players to play for free, and/or choose what to purchase

Don’t update it then but at least keep it as a separate game client in legacy mode like CSGO!

CSGO all skins and matchmaking and everything is gone in the legacy version. But if you want that, I guess, you could make an argument for that sure

Many games manage to keep their previous games open even after they release a sequel so there’s no excuse for a AAA publisher and certainly not one with the backing of Microsoft with all of their money!

:smirk_cat:

Well, that’s certainly a compelling argument!

Just because other people do something, doesn’t mean you should too.

It means they don’t have an excuse not to especially when lots of people still want to play the old one!

Absolutely no reason not to give people the choice!

:+1:

I think queue times alone is enough of an excuse. But, I’m sure you haven’t put much thought into it

That might apply to some game modes but openQ would be fine and actually if you made the old one free to play then you would get even more players and I don’t think the queueing issue would be much of an issue at all!

:star_struck:

You are right! Stupid blizzard :star: Gold star for you

I wouldn’t say it was stupid - they did it on purpose to force everyone to play the sequel!

But it was kind of shortsighted and they don’t need to force people anymore because everyone has already checked out OW2 and if they don’t like it now then they’re not going to play it so might as well give veteran players who want to play the old one the ability to do so!

I’ve actually put quite a bit of thought into this!

:point_up_2:

Lord those were the days, how I miss it and how I miss when Blizzard didn’t treat this game like such a sweatfest. Honestly that’s my biggest gripe with OW2 is how much incredibly anti casual it is now adays. OWL is dead, and for good reason, don’t make OW competitive as well.

Having 6 Reinhardts on a payload was the funniest thing
