Well, hero bans are only for Diamond and higher in Marvel Rivals. Do you guys want it to be that way too or other ranks as well?
Hero bans canât work in this game. Each hero is a needed tool with a specific function. When one is missing, it greatly restricts viable strategies. Itâs not like a MoBA where there are tons of interchangeable heroes and youâre locked into your choice from the beginning. It works for Rivals because their heroes are functionally similar even if their approaches are slightly different. Not so in OW.
Last time they tried implementing bans in OW, it resulted in mostly mirror comps, because thatâs the safest best when certain counters arenât available. It was boring and went against OWâs spirit of having all tools available at all times.
Hero bans were always needed, full stop.
If the devs and the community had dropped the ego from the beginning and took lessons from other games that were actually successful in esports in an organic way (rather than a kotick monstrosity that threw money at it), they would have implemented it in the game for the overwatch league at a miminumâŚ
âŚand before any of you even have the temerity to chime your dumb thoughts about rebutting this, just be intellectually honest with yourself and accept the absolute certainty that a player chosen hero ban would have stopped GOATS in its track rather than left that monstrosity of a comp fester for 3 ENTIRE STAGES OF A SEASON OF OVERWATCH LEAGUE. Congratulations, months of non action from a development team that fancied itself as towering intellectuals of game design sat and watched while live audiences boo their game when a team got off non goats after just 10 seconds of anubis.
Failure was rightfully earned.
My take is, it should only be diamond and above.
This isnât grounded on reality. Iâm sorry I canât sugar coat it. Viable strategies emerge that were otherwise nonviable when you add hero bans, not the other way around. Hero A can become more useful when Hero B is removed from the match whereas before, Hero A would be at a significant disadvantage and would always be the case in every game. There are no two heroes that will break the game if they were picked for a ban for a match on occasion. This is maddening to even explain.
Also, when Blizzard attempted hero bansâŚThey werenât hero bans. They were âHero Poolsâ. Very different things.
Blizzard would simply remove a hero from the pool for the week and theyâd dust off their hands thinking âjob well doneâ but it was nonsensical and had no rhyme or reason. Hero bans PER MATCH selection by the players themselves actually have merit because a team can decide if they want to get rid of the potential for a widow for the game and enable a comp theyâd be more comfortable with. This does not draw a comparison with someone at blizzard HQ arbitrarily deciding, on everyoneâs behalf, that Mei needs to take vacation.
But that is quintessential blizzard design strategy - they decide, and everyone else can go pound sand because there is no competition, ergo, everything theyâve done is the correct⌠oh wait, is that the sound of spider man?!
No, I hope this never happens . U got a otp, yeah cool his hero gets banned ⌠meh lose .
Hows that different to when someone picks someone elses OTP? The OTP can stamp their feet all they want but if they want to throw then they lose anyhow.
The coddling of OTPs shouldnât be a consideration in a TEAM based game. The health of the whole is far more important than the tiny selfish minority.
You can talk to each other and the otp then just gets its hero?
They did use actual hero bans during a pro tournament. The heroes to be banned were selected by each team at the beginning of a map. Itâs grounded in reality because itâs what happened, and the same thing would happen in non-pro competitive games.
Casual players might think âremove the OP thingâ will fix their issues, but it wonât. Theyâll then just have to play against the thing that the thing they removed countered.
And if theyâre both otps? What if the person who picked quickly isnât even in chat? There isnât an expectation of civility, as much as weâd like.
But the seed was planted I guess and so people have to yield to a OTP.
At the end of the day, hero bans, done by the team during the match should have been something blizzard considered since owl season 2
During season 21, it was a hero pool. It was very much decided by blizzard. I donât have the fainted idea when OWL had player chosen hero bans but it. was. pools.
This isnât what a hero ban is when as it is understood by the larger competitive esports scene. Hero bans are done right before a match and theyâre for that match alone.
Youâll have to dig up what games youâre talking about where an OWL team was picking the bans before the game on stage, because I canât find who played such a game, and what was banned.
Hero bans have already been tried in OW
They were a dismal failure, and as such, there no good reason to bring them back
Player chosen hero bans during a match was never attempted.
The day they implement hero bans is the day i uninstall. It would be a shame because OW is my favorite game, i have been playing since the week Ana was released. On the bright side though, I spend well north of $100 per season on overwatch so I would save a lot of money when i uninstall
Hero bans were tried, and failed dismally
They are imo a very bad idea that only results in players being unable to play their favorite hero
I know of no good reason - emphasis on âgoodâ - for them to ever be part of this game again
Citation needed.
Hero pools are not hero bans.
They are, actually; and again, I know of no GOOD reason to bring this proven failure back to the game
I will not be continuing this conversation unless a good reason for re-adding this proven dismal failure is presented
Those are hero pools. In a very weak sense.
Player chosen hero bans have never existed in overwatch, please stop this dishonesty. Name a season where players decided which hero to ban.
this isnt even true. echo fundamentally just counters pharah and pharahs infinite flight made projectile players cry
They used them during an OWL tournament. Google it yourself, but it happened.
this one?

Community and professional reactions
The communityâs response to the hero ban system has been overwhelmingly positive. Many players appreciate the potential for more balanced matches and the reduction of specific heroes dominance. Professional players and analysts are also watching closely to see how this change will affect the overall competition.
Looking Forward
The success of the hero ban system at the EWC could pave the way for its adoption in other major tournaments, such as the Overwatch Contenders Series (OWCS). If it proves to enhance gameplay and viewer experience, hero bans might become a staple in competitive Overwatch 2.
As the EWC unfolds, all eyes will be on how hero bans shape the competition. This innovative mechanic has the potential to revolutionize the game, offering a fresh and strategic approach to Overwatch 2âs biggest tournament of the year. Stay tuned to see how this bold experiment plays out and what it means for the future of competitive Overwatch.
Guess that positive feedback was for nothing?
Could this be any further removed from blizzard letting diamond or masters rank or OWL games have a season with a hero ban system one like EWC had? I guess only way to be further removed would be streamers holding a tournament with hero bans and then claiming âblizzardâ tried hero bans.
