Overwatch Jargon

Hi all, I decided to make a list of slang words in Overwatch and what they mean, for those who are unfamiliar.

  • QP: Quick Play
  • Comp: Competitive
  • Choke/chokepoint: A small area which forces a team to be in an unfavourable position. Most heroes must go through these points in order to proceed.
  • Trickle in: Going in one-by-one in order to attempt to try and contest an objective or to stall instead of grouping up.
  • Stagger: Stalling the death of one enemy in order to force the enemy team to wait longer to be able to group up.
  • Clutch: Performing an incredible play that wins a fight, despite being outnumbered by the enemy team.
  • TP/tele: Teleporter
  • Meta: Stands for Most Effective Tactic Available (credit to dreadburnz). A strat followed by people to try and win a match.
  • 2/2/2: 2 tanks, 2 DPS’ and 2 healers.
  • GOATS: 3 tanks and 3 healers. Also known as 3/3, Slambulance, or triple tank.
  • Dive: A strategy that specialises in high mobility heroes in order to overwhelm the enemy. This meta includes D.Va, Winston and Lucio.
  • Combo and/or wombo: Combining 2 or more ults together (i.e. Nanoboost and Dragonblade, Graviton Surge and Barrage, etc.)
  • Hitscan: A hero who’s weapon immediatly hits the enemy that they are shooting at.
  • Projectile: A type of weapon that requires prediction.
  • Pick: Getting a kill on an enemy. Typically followed by a push.
  • Push: Moving towards the enemy in order to get to an objective.
  • KOTH: Short for King of the Hill, refers to Control maps.
  • C9: A term coined by the team Cloud 9. It means that a team won the team fight, but failed to capture the objective (may not be an actual C9).
    • See also; A common phrase used in Twitch chat as a meme whenever someone leaves the point in an attempt to stall or when a team takes a point in general. Credit to GrilledCheez.
    • See also; Leaving the point when you’ve won the fight. Credit to Felhelen.
  • Z9: Not touching the point when you could have.
  • Peel: To actively assist a teammate in order to keep them alive. This can be as a result of pocketing them, or drawing enemy fire. Credit to Nepenthe & HintOfMalice
  • Inting: Intentional feeding. Letting the enemy kill you on purpose in order to give them an advantage over your team. In Overwatch, it’s to give the enemy team more ult charge. Credit to dreadburnz.
  • Throwing: Intentionally trying to lose a match, whether by assisting the enemy team directly or hampering your team (not the same as inting, since you can help the enemy team without letting them kill you). Credit to dreadburnz.
  • Popping off: To pull off an amazing play or many consecutive plays, as a result of warming up. Credit to dreadburnz.
  • aKm blade: A unit of time that lasts about 3 minutes and 45 seconds. Credit to GrilledCheez.
  • Plat chat: Whenever Twitch chat gets something wrong while watching a pro game, for instance, spamming GOATS in chat when the team in question is running Slambulance. Credit to GrilledCheez
  • PvP: Player vs player. Credit to IsTheMedia
  • PvE: Player vs environment. Credit to IsTheMedia
  • (Character) is lit/1hp/weak/low: Character is extremely low in health and can easily be killed. Credit to Kajabuubuu.
  • BOS: Short for Bastion, Orisa and Symmetra. Is currently making its way into Overwatch and is a hard counter to GOATS.

Will add more when I have time.
Suggest some more if you can!
BTW, does anyone have a good idea on how I can format this better? Thanks.

OP, META specifically stands for ‘Most Effective Tactic Available’.
Also you could add these to the list of jargon:
Inting: Intentional feeding. Letting the enemy kill you on purpose, in order to give them an advantage over your team (in Overwatch’s case, it’s to give the enemy team more ult charge).

Throwing: Intentionally trying to lose a match, whether by assisting the enemy team directly or hampering your team (not the same as inting, since you can help the enemy team without letting them kill you).

Popping off: To pull off an amazing play or many consecutive plays, as a result of warming up.

The one we all need to remember:

Peel: To actively assist a team mate in order to keep them alive.

I would edit this to say “It’s what you type when you grav or mei wall the enemy so they physically can not touch the point, and it should be said before the game actually ends.”

:sunglasses:

C9/z9 LUL - A common phrase used in twitch chat as a meme whenever someone leaves the point in an attempt to stall or when a team takes a point in general. The scenario in question is not typically an actual c9

aKm blade - a unit of time that lasts about 3 min 45

Plat chat - whenever twitch chat gets something wrong while watching a pro game, for instance spamming goats in chat when the team in question is running slambulance

(Since there are some who don’t know what this mean and had to have it defined a few times)

PvP= Player vs Player (comp/qp/ect)

PvE= Player vs Enviroment (Uprising/Retribution/even can consider Bots)

Thanks everyone for the updates, I have made changes to the post.

“(character) is Lit/1hp/Weak/Low” - target is in low health and needs to be eliminated.

Any more suggestions?

These two are different. C9 is leaving the point when you won the fight. Z9 is not touching the point when you could have.

“E-Sports Ready” - When you experience a glitch in gameplay that causes you to die or miss a potential play.

Hi all,
I’ve just updated the list with one new term:
BOS!
As always, your feedback is appreciated.

Peel is more than assisting a teammate. It’s specifically to draw aggro or to physically intercept fire.

So, healing, for example is not peeling, but holding DM over them is.

whaaaa?
