spagehtti code, I 100% believe if they try changing the UI, the games gonna stop working like if you remove the coconut picture from TF2’s files, the game stops working

It was probably a trade-off so that players an have OW2 skins in the mode.

yep. they had to make sure the OW2 Stuff didn’t mess up in OW Classic.

They could bring it back in the future but it would likely need to be rebuilt AND compatible with any changes for OW Classic and OW2

They could have just turned OW1 servers back on, and not do all this work for a subpar product.

TBH while i can’t verify… i think they likely overwrote the data on the servers to make em into OW2 Servers. Hence why he have some improvements and less glitches but some of the occasional server problems from OW1 like random lag spikes and so fourth.

Nah different versions can easily be deployed and new servers can be spun up in modern dev environments. It just takes $ and ability, so, still never happening but that won’t keep me from pointing it out.

great point although i think they’d just reuse the servers.

Waste Not and Want Not. Plus probs saved some spare moo lah $$$.

doubt, If you have old potgs saved from OW1 it showed the original HUD

Saving a POTG renders it as a video afaik

As reasonable as that sounds, I question whether that’s true or not because of what they said about the last event. Someone “remade” all the scripts for a Blizzard HQ event for the 1st OWC event, meaning they at least looked through the code to make it compatible with OW2.

I feel like they should be able to do at least some of those requests.

i wonder if they have the servers/engine code and old beta builds heh. collecting dust in a room or something?

TF2 doesn’t care nor stop you if delete every texture in the game btw lol

I agree with the spaghetti code though. It makes me wonder how they get around s9 changes because devs have stated undoing it is complicated. Maybe that only applies in connection with some other changes that just entirely get removed for classic anyway

You can find the files on your PC so yes

Remember that OW2 is not actually a new game, just an update. OW1 and whatever version of the engine it ran on will be part of their normal versioning system. The servers themselves don’t matter, they’re just a place to deploy things to and can be spun up/down at a price.

There are things that can fundamentally break over time, but even though it feels like it the last version of OW1 wasn’t that long ago.

usually developers keep every single version of the game in an archive, it would be very irresponsible to delete them

I’m 100% certain they have the original 2017 moth meta version stored somewhere, they just are too lazy to properly port it into ow2

I’m fairly confident in saying:

They aren’t grabbing the original patch/game and using it to make the classic mode, but instead when they moved everything over to OW2 with the new engine, they had to recreate everything. Granted they had the blueprints from OW1, but still had to go and remake it into OW2.
This is why certain things didn’t come through and had to be changed in OW2, like Mercy’s ‘super jump’ which wasn’t actually a feature in OW1, but a bug that worked in favor of the players who liked it, so they kept it. But when they made OW2, it appears they were not able to recreate the same bug. Players liked ‘super jump’, so they just created their own version of it and made it simpler.

Same thing with OW Classic mode. They are just recreating the the OW1 patch within OW2 engine. If they wanted to have all the old HUD/UI’s, they would have to recreate them into OW2… which is just more time and money.
You’ll notice that the maps in OWC are also the same current/updated maps of OW2. They just used what was already there and only recreated the character stats that matched the classic patch. Otherwise, they would have had to make or at least take time to dig out all the old maps before the updates.

That damning evidence was likely burned long ago.

id believe this if it werent for every mythic weapon in the game giving additional hud flair.

like how ashes mythic weapon, every time you get a kill, sprouts another piece of pink flowers on your hud that surround your huds ult tracker

they can change the hud, they probably just didnt even think to, most likely because most of the current devs werent around in ow1. like alec dawson, i dont think he ever played ow1

Not that I think it’s the ‘spaghetti code’ argument, but the old OW1 POTG are essentially a screen recording.
It isn’t pulling from the OW1 source code. It’s just a saved video of what was happening when it was recorded.
