New ping/comms limit is an accessibility issue

As of the last two days (i.e. the season 8 patch), the game is much quicker to throttle how often a player can use the basic comms wheel commands when bound to keys. For example, I have ‘M’ bound to ‘thank you’ and ‘F’ bound to ‘fall back’, and now they each only work about once every two minutes or so. Selecting comms from the wheel itself seems to be a little more lenient, but it’s noticeably more restricted than it used to be.

This also seems to be affecting the context ping, such as pointing out an enemy or trap.

This is a severe accessibility issue.

Not everyone can speak on voice chat. It’s not simply a question of people needing to own a microphone and plug it in; there are many disabilities which interfere with a person’s ability to use a microphone.
Not everyone can type efficiently in text chat, either. Obviously it’s very awkward on console, but even on PC, typing clearly (and quickly) can be a challenge for many people at the best of times, let alone when under fire.
Even when players can speak or write, there’s the issue of language. On the EU servers, it is rare for every single person in a game to speak the same language. The ‘stock’ communications are translated automatically so everyone hears/reads them in a language they understand, making this method of communication universal and enabling more effective teamwork—and better manners—regardless of language barriers.

Ping and stock communication options, like Overwatch 2 has had so far, are critical to not only the enjoyment of the game for many, but in many cases are critical to gameplay. A player who can’t highlight enemies they see or communicate with their team at all is a big hindrance. Overwatch relies on players having at least this basic level of communication available. Not only that, but being able to easily say “hello” and “thank you” is a vital part of maintaining a friendly atmosphere.

Stricter limitations were likely put in place to stop spam, however only today I have witnessed many people spamming “hello” and character voice lines seemingly freely. The game usually does display a warning that a player will be muted if they have/continue to spam voice lines, but that is not occurring now. It seems to be totally arbitrary whether any given player will have their communications limited.

Blizzard, whether this was intentional or a bug, free use of the stock communications and ping system is a vital component of the game, and must be restored. For the people who can’t speak, for the people who can’t type, for the people who speak different languages, and simply for everyone who wants to communicate with other players simply and effectively, these new limitations must be removed.

yeah i thought something was wrong with my keybinds and that maybe they got reset.

was trying to say thank you and no matter how many times i pressed my keybind for it nothing happened, and then i got the message saying i had to wait to use anymore communication.

it makes no sense and if it’s a bug they need to fix it asap.

User Angela has made a similar thread on the Bug forum, which demonstrates the importance of the communication commands and precisely why limiting them hinders accessibility.

This issue is affecting how I communicate in the game. I am mute in real life, I cannot sit and type for 30s to say thank you or group up in the middle of the game. I cannot communicate using voice chat even if I want to. Why is blizzard actively taking away accessibility options from this game?

even in a fresh game i am unable to say comms like “yes” or “no” the first time I press it in a fresh game if I’m looking directly at another player. The timer cooldown isn’t the issue its that they bugged something

I’m having the same problem, even things like my ultimate is charging, thanks and group up isn’t working at all… Only thing that seems to work now and then is “hello”, I have a speech disorder and can’t talk. So I use the ping wheel to say hello, thank people who help me, say you’re welcome, inform about my ultimate etc. But now I can’t do anything, I can say hello every 4-5 min though, absolutely ridiculous restrictions.

more than likely they are doing it because it gives out too much information.

For Quickplay this needs to be restricted. But for competitive play, absolutely not.

It’s absolutely infuriating, especially when you try to do a sound cue but it does nothing, so you try again and again and each time nothing happens until it tells you you’re using too many voice lines. Not sure if it’s a bug or intentional, but either way it’s extremely frustrating

what?

saying thank you, group up, etc is giving too much information?

Neither should be restricted, but if one had to be, it’d be Competitive. Competitive play can live without people saying “hello” and “thank you”; Quick Play is, by Blizzard’s own definition, where it’s okay to mess around a bit, be more relaxed, and be friendlier. (Not that anyone should be rude in Competitive, but you get the idea.)

But, as I said, the communication binds and wheel should not be restricted in either mode, and if this is a bug and not an intentional restriction, it’s one which demands priority attention.

blame League of Legends devs, they did it first in their game.
