Network - Latency Issues

I’ve been suffering hitreg issues with almost every hero, mostly projectile ones and even sometimes with hitscan heroes too, it’s really annoying because I can see the impact and blood effect but no damage is dealt, also I used to have 50-60 ping, now is at 88 MS.

WinMTR v0.92 GPL V2 by Appnor MSP - Fully Managed Hosting & Cloud Provider ~~~~

Hey there Rorik, thanks for providing that WinMTR test data. The test here shows 1% packet loss beginning from the first ‘hop’ and persisting through all subsequent hops:

192.168.100.1 - 1 :warning: | 884 | 883 | 0 | 0 | 20 | 0 |

This first hop is the connection from your computer to the router or modem (depending on which device you’re connecting to). Packet loss is relatively common to see with unstable WiFi connections, so if you are using WiFi, try testing a direct connection to the router or modem via ethernet cable. Note that we do not directly support wireless connections. If you find that WiFi is the problem, you can contact the support team for the WiFi device or the wireless router.

If you continue to experience the packet loss & hit registry – or if a wired connection isn’t an option – this would be an issue to bring up to your ISP, as they may need to run some diagnostic tests on your modem or router and/or temporarily replace the device to determine what is causing the packet loss. Keep in mind that you can request to speak with a “level 2 or level 3 technician” when contacting the ISP, as the front-line representatives typically only have access to basic diagnostics and troubleshooting tools. In addition, I encourage forwarding the WinMTR data to whomever you speak with when contacting the ISP, because if they’re able to interpret the data, this may enable them to diagnose and resolve the issue more quickly.

I hope that this information has provided further insight into the situation and helps get things fixed up so you can get back to playing as normal!

Thanks for the quick reply, here’s a quick video I made to better describe my problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIkuxpIIDPY
I’m playing on a wired connection so I really don’t know what is going on with the game, it feels like all my movements and shots are “delayed” from everyone else on the server, sometimes there are network warnings in-game and sometimes not.

My connection is stable and this is the only game that give me issues, anyways thanks for the help I will try to talk to my ISP.

Your video shows that you’re having packet loss, that’s the orange icon with the lightning bolt through it.

UPDATE: I’ve talked to my ISP and they said that my connection is good and stable, also the router is working fine.
This is the only game that has packet loss, so idk what could be the cause, I’ve tried everything so I guess I’m quitting the game.
Thanks for the help tho.

Rorik,

The information in that winMTR actually doesn’t explain your problem at all. You’re getting way too many noreg shots to be explained by a single dropped packet once in a while or an average latency of ~30 to the servers. It’s still possible we didn’t catch the packet loss correctly with that test, but I want to deviate for a sec from this troubleshooting line. It makes a little more sense to try a couple other things than keep worrying about one dropped packet for now.

I think something else is going on here - probably quality of service related. Try updating your network drivers, and if you have a killer network card, install the Killer Network Manager, then disable Advanced Stream Detect.

If neither works, do you have a separate modem and router? If so, bypass the router to wire directly into the modem by ethernet. If that works, it probably means it’s a router firewall settings like Quality of Service there.

All of my drivers are up to date, I have an Intel I211 NIC if that helps, also my PC is connected directly to the modem via Ethernet.

I also did another WinMTR test, this time with no packet loss.

Average latency is still in the ~50 range when it gets to this Equinix node in Chicago which is right next to the servers. I suspect the root issue is not actually related to routing, but instead something that will impact only the game connection and not the testing tool.

Examples:

  • Addons
  • ISP throttling due to bandwidth issues due to covid 19 impact on global network usage
  • Quality of Service software on the computer or router

If the root issue is ISP throttling, it will not show up in the network test and it will not be something we can fix. Many ISP are putting high priority on business and education networks to ensure their users are able to continue their normal life while staying home from work/school.

What we can try from here:

  • Restore the game files to default temporarily
  • Check for Quality of Service software on the computer. Examples: Killer Control Center, Alienware Command Center, Dell SmartByte, HP Connection Optimizer, Asus Command Center, MSI Dragon Center, and other similar software. Basically anything that says it’s trying to make your network "Better’ could be a factor here.
  • Check for Quality of Service settings on the router. Not all routers will have this, contact the device provider for details (in most cases the ISP)
  • Test a different network temporarily

I do sincerely hope the info helps. Let us know how things go!
