Mei 11th: What If Mei couldn’t use her wall from spawn?

Ni Hao Friends! and welcome once again to THE MONTH OF MEI Season 3!
A month long project where I post threads about Overwatch best girl Mei, every dei, for the entire month of… well… May.
Todei’s topic: Trolls

We’ve all been there, the game begins, and someone picks Mei, you wait for the doors to open, dreading the inevitable, and then it happens, the door opens only for a blue wall of ice to block it off again. you have a Mei Troll.

Nobody likes it, so why not change it? They’ve done it with abilities in the past, making them unusable in spawn, so why not Ice wall too? in that case, in order to Mei troll properly, they’d have to get out of spawn first, going backward, and then put up the wall, during which time your team has the chance to get out around her. and also she’ll have her back to the door while she waits which would be a dead givaway.

Thank you for reading, and Check out the SUPERTHREAD™ (linked below) for more Mei all month long!

I mean this is a pretty good idea, there is no real reason Mei needs to use her ice wall in spawn.

They disabled Symmetra’s TP in spawn as a lazy fix to a glitch, and that ability actually HAS legit uses in spawn.

Disable Mei wall in spawn. I’m for it.

A nerf to trolls I love it

i mean, its not really that big of a deal. I feel like the time could be used for better stuff

Why not haha.

I do like using my wall in spawn and never come across troll meis anymore but if it helps someone then go for it.

Even if they look down as they exit and place it as soon as they exit you can still just report them

Maybe I’m wrong, but this doesn’t seem like it would take all that much time to implement.

then again I’m not a programmer.

Blizzard needs to hire this person. Seriously why isn’t this already a thing? Good idea OP!

Lol, no. As I said in the post above you, I’m not a programmer. and I don’t think Blizzard is hiring people just to have ideas.
They already have Michel Chu.

My wig is on fire, the tea is everywhere, I can’t stop quaking and my house is a mess. What have you done.

It depends on the code. Let’s assume the code is what I think it looks like, so in this case tbe fix will be:
While(IsInSpawn(PlayerOnHero(Mei), TeamOf(EventPlayer))
{
Mei.DeployWall(EventPlayer, flase);
}

That’s assuming they have a conditional action that says “deploys an entity if the ability in slot 2 is used and the primary fire buttonbis clicked” or something along those lines. Though, the game’s code is probably a lot more complicated than I think it is due to the massive amount of heroes and maps and all of the other stuff that’s in the game.

My suggestion is adding a “while” loop (a loop that checks if the condition inside it is true, and if it is true then it executes the code whithin the loop itself until the condition is false) that checks if the Mei player is whithin the borders of their spawn room, and while this condition is true they won’t be able to deploy walls. It’s a pretty easy fix if you already have the code typed down.

Hey good ideas can make money. One can dream anyway. :sweat_smile:

Yes please, it’s annoying sometimes

Sure why not, they did it with Sym so why not with Mei :smiley:

Kinda is…if a troll mei walls off door at start of lijang tower then other team gets a head start, leading to better inital positioning and advantage for 1st fight

This shouldve been stopped 2 years ago

Won’t you just run out the door looking down mashing the E button?

So that’s why I couldn’t use it anymore. That’s pretty disappointing =\ coulda been useful to get to the top on Kings row

maybe, but at least then the team has the chance to be right there with her and end up on the outside

I could immediately think of a use for walling in spawn.

Placing a wall horizontally on a map like Hanamura second defense to clear Hammond mines in the doorway.

Seems like a stupid change because trolls will be trolls regardless of how wall mechanics work in spawn.

I’m on console (Xbox specifically) and I don’t know what it’s like everywhere else? But it’s become so much of an expected thing to be ice walled into Spawn that I will figure out which door the Mei is standing at, and if possible go to a different exit entirely.

Of course this never happens in Comp, but QP and Mystery Heroes it’s almost a standard (so much so I’ve watched my own teammates change doors if I pick Mei or had someone come on voice already telling me not to put a wall up). It’s expected, and in some cases mid-match when it’s the last countdown to quickly contest a point (like Anubis), having to stop and run to the other exit thanks to your own Mei being intentionally obnoxious could cost the entire match. Sometimes seconds do count, and it’s not fair to have a game affected and the team’s general mood tilt over it (because fact is, people pissed off don’t play as well as they do when level headed).

Having it spawn-blocked would be fantastic, and yeah true she could run out of the door and still manage it, or have to stop to turn around, but as the point was already made that time would allow the team to still get out of spawn. Heroes who can jet out quickly (Genji or D.Va as two examples), that ice wall isn’t going up fast enough to stop them. A Hanzo can climb it if the wall isn’t gap-free pinned to the spawn’s door frame, Widow can grapple elsewhere, some heroes can simply walk through the gap and keep going, etc etc. There’s escapes for spawn even if not everyone is able to fit through and you know, three of six heroes getting out could be the three of six who are capable of holding point till everyone else catches up versus no one making it until the other team gets the best positioning.

Personally I don’t feel the “can still ice wall but has to position” point really counters spawn-blocking her ice wall.

So best just roll over and take it right?
