Marvel Rivals doing better than any other Blizzard game

Here it is: https://www.thegamer.com/marvel-rivals-holding-onto-players-much-better-other-live-services/

I don’t know how long honeymoon phase last for those delusionals who think Rivals will eventually fail, but for the first reports Marvel Rivals is doing better than any other Blizzard game and even any other recent live service game.

In the report they compare different games 6 weeks after it’s release and guess what.

In 6 weeks:

Marvel Rivals lost 3% of it’s avg players while OW2 lost 53% of it’s players and Diablo IV lost also 53% of it’s players (with their Vessel of Hatred DLC they lost 74% of it’s players).

It’s pretty safe to say this game is here to stay.

What will OW2 do when they release so loved heroes like Deadpool, Daredevil, Thanos?
Or when they start doing PvE events?
Or when they start doing collabs with MCU movies/tv shows?

I bet in a few months we’ll be calling Rivals “the real OW killer”

TBH OW kinda died before MR when it went to OW2 but thats just my opinion. MR sorta sped up the process unfortunately and they’ll need to anchor down and push back against the seas themselves to win people over.

This Honeymoon is going to get really hot once Johnny Storm makes his way to Mahvel. So… It will last at least until season 15 of Overwatch.

I hope so, Em.

Um… Release a bondage Kiriko skin?

Uh… 7v7?

Collab with World of Warcraft… Again?

I am never going to call it that, but it already killed Overwatch for me if we are being honest.

And then for Rivals S2 who knows: Blade, Ultron, Deadpool, Gambit… there is estimations if they keep adding heroes each 45 days as promised, they have enough content for 850 years.

You, me and 50% of it’s players. Here there is another article talking about that: https://www.thegamer.com/marvel-rivals-overwatch-killer-better-worse/

i feel like the boy left behind when the pied piper took all the kids away from the town. now im stuck in this ghostville called OW when I should be in MR. I’d play MR more but it just doesn’t run as smoothly on my last-gen hw.

some of us want more MR and less OW, but we’re stuck here (for now).
rooting for the competition because i think it will bring about new game direction.

I have a mid end HW and it runs fine. I can run it constantly at 144 FPS with an AMD 6800 GPU.
You may need turn off Lumen reflections that’s worse than Raytracing and you’ll barely notice a difference in the graphics.

Oh, please. That’s ridiculous. I can’t believe you’d say such a thing.

It’ll be a bondage Juno skin.

makes you wonder if ow had competition before if people would have stayed as long

even with min everything, MR still feels a bit janky and cluttered. just a vague, undiagnosed “slightly unoptimized” feeling…that many people have reported. it might be the HW or it might be the engine. But for my last-gen hardware, OW2 runs much better in terms of fluidity and loading times, while MR just isn’t quite there. That’s ofc my $0.02 but as someone in the top 1% of reaction time i get annoyed at even +/- 10ms deltas. I still run a ps/2 kb because 7 ms over usb is still 7ms.

i really think Tim Ford (lead engine dev) got it right with the polish and refinement of the OW engine (OW2 was slightly worse because reasons). Definitely one of the few I respect from Team4. The OW engine is brilliant, holding it’s own against entire MR franchise who arguably had a head-start with Unreal.

Maybe the Rivals players will finally stop posting about Rivals in Overwatch communities then.

One can dream.

EDIT:

The funny thing is, apart from Counter-Strike 2, Overwatch 2 is really the only big F2P live-service shooter game that we have any kind of realistic player numbers for (I say ‘kind of realistic’ because most of the PC playerbase is still on Battle.net, but no-one knows the actual proportion). And no, that ‘Activplayer’ site doesn’t count - if I guessed numbers, they’d be just as valid as that site.

Counter-Strike 2 playercounts are down ~6% for the last 30 days, pretty significant considering the size of that game’s playerbase.

Valorant is no-longer in the ‘most played’ list on the Epic Games store, where it has pretty-much been a mainstay since it launched there (it’s #6 though, not like it has cratered or anything). Safe to assume Valorant playercount is down to some degree as well.

Fortnite is still #1 (Victory Royale) over everything and nothing even comes close - and I"m not just talking about the Epic store.

Rivals has had an impact pretty-much everywhere, but all live-service games are really just fighting over Fortnite’s crumbs - it’s why they all adopted the same monetization model.

Funny thing is, at the end of the day, the most popular live service, third-person shooter game that allows you to play as Marvel characters is… Fortnite.

But if the doomers actually leave, who will make the wonderful threads about Twitch numbers and Steam charts? :scream:

Thats the single point where OW wins Rivals, it’s engine. But will also be the reason Rivals will advance 4x times faster than OW.

Just look. They patched yesterday a new gamemode for playing football.

If they need to develop PvE they will simply need to install a framework with some WYSIG UI and they have 50% of the work done. Meanwhile for having PvE in OW they will need a team of few PhD engineers only for develop bots AI.

I knew that the fall that had been going on for a long time, slow thanks to the fact that Blizzard games benefited from the monopoly effect, would accelerate with the appearance of competitors better than them, but not to this point.

The excessive greed of decision-makers, the continual contempt for players (customers), and the self-sufficiency of developers, all the evidence was there to show us what was going to happen, but no one wanted to see it. Now it is no longer possible to play blind.

It is sad to have to say it, it is not for the pleasure of saying it, and not with the aim of revenge, but ABK deserves what is happening to it, and he has deserved it for years.

And unfortunately I don’t think it’s going to produce an electroshock at ABK or Microsoft to do everything to reverse the trend that’s started, no, they’re just going to try to make sure that games on the inevitable decline are pressured to get as much profit as possible, before the profits disappear, and the game is virtually dead, like HotS.

Team 4 continue to improve their engine too. They’re working on DX12 support and a new lighting system (yes, another one lol) at the moment.

Tank (the Overwatch engine) isn’t the most dynamic of game engines - it’s pretty-much only good for Overwatch and it has some pretty huge limitations (like requiring an always-on connection to Blizzard, so no custom servers or map editing). But it’s pretty good at being a base for Overwatch.

Yhh. Surely they are spending millions with PdH developpers while Rivals with some incompetent developers and UE5 only need click in a few buttons for doing those things.

I mean i like marvel rivals and OW2, but i admit, compared to right NOW, Marvel rivals regularly consumes twice the gpu usage ( 80-120W vs 40-60W) of 220W on my 3060’s settings.

So it tends to use twice as much power for frankly, tf2 akin graphics even on low settings. or 40 fps marvel rivals vs 80 fps ow2.

However i remember at Ow2’s launch, i also noticed it was MUCH worse at power usage imho than ow1, for mostly similar graphics, and it burnt out my last card.

I don’t think Ow2 was more optimized for then, just that modern devs seem to be baselining their games for the current most popular cards and then as gpu creep comes up, devs optimize for whatever the common card is then.

There’s a reason doom runs on a pregnancy tester or mri machine at like 1 mb of ram but oldschool runescape went from like 4-8 mb of ram for ‘high detail’ to like 700 mb for runelight and osrs prif.

I’ve still heard that Marvel rival’s Unreal engine 5 is currently unoptimized and has a memory leak after a few hrs that crashes long sessions, like if you play 4+ hrs straight without relogs, it can crash a ranked game, but otherwise it’s like a fun refresh of ow1.

There’s like 40 new heros, the healers can actually duel while the dps get super dives and ko ults, the 8s stand still immortality ults are a bit boring even vs zen, who moves faster and has it less longer. (honestly wouldn’t mind a zen treatment to A luna ‘nerf’. Faster movement for lower uptime/radius).

But it’s a fresh new game, dailies are like 20 minutes and stack up with rerolls while Overwatch routinely feels like a chore at 45 minutes a day x 7 days a week = 6 hrs of dailies a week for the battlepass.

In marvel rivals, quests are treats like
o Deal 5000 damage
o Get 15 assists with 1 of 5 characters (Adam, Mantis, Hulk, Starlord, etc0
o Shield 2000-5000 damage

Weeklies

  • Deal 30000 damage
  • Take 30000 Damage
  • Get 50 kills as 1 of 5 characters.

Meanwhile in ow2, every single quest is

  • Play 3 - 400 games in a row as ALL / TANK which also blocks your other quest’s credit
  • Play 4 games as healers who can heal with weapons
  • Play 5 games as healers and heal 25000 hp with only 200 hp moira orbs
  • 3 star a hero mastery course nobody wants to play
  • Play pve that doesn’t exist.
  • No re rolls

Honestly i feel like im gonna finish up the current purchased ow2 battlepass then just stop doing a hr of dailies in ow2 anymore. It always felt like a chore and the weeklies needing like 10 hrs a week to do on rate vs Marvel Rivals technically letting you save up all weeklies to complete the battle pass for 40 days just sounds better to me.

We live in a modern economy jobs and layoffs are happening and outsourcing is a concern and every game wants a 2-10 hr a week battlepass ± hearthstone/wow /fortnite/other games.

If there’s one complaint, Marvel rivals moderates flames / League toxicity less since it’s f2p, new, and doesn’t seem to handle reports as well, but i hope eventually that gets managed but i just ignore people who flame and stop healing them and let them die over and over again.
