Less than 24 hours

It took less than 24 hours,

through simple online interaction,

to find hundreds (not an exaggeration) of:

  • retired tank players, that would come back to try 6v6 mode
  • various tank duos that quit or play other roles, that would like to try 6v6 mode
  • various players who dislike tanking but still play it, that would like to try 6v6 mode
  • various players who can’t stand tanking and play other roles instead, that would like to try 6v6 mode
  • and some extreme examples, like a madman, who used to play hundreds of games of just tank, that doesn’t play OW2, that would like to try 6v6 mode

Why do I say this?

I’m not no influencer, no streamer, no YouTuber,

I’m just a random guy who made a random post on social platform,

but getting 100+ comments like this, in the span of less than 24 hours?

Total insanity.

hundreds of people looking to try it out is one thing.

but i hope you understand theyd have to double the current tank playerbase for the long term to not affect the queue times.

My buddy played a ton of tank before OW2. Hasn’t touched it since. He kinda follows the 6v6 discourse. I don’t think he would stay beyond the first week or so. I believe he’s just moved on from OW, though he hasn’t said that, although he hasn’t expressed a ton of excitement either.

I feel like there’s some context missing. What did you do exactly? and what exactly are they responding to?

Right now, I’m just guessing that you ran a poll or something on Twitter, but I don’t see how this would be new information. Other people have done this before as well and gotten the same results (unless this isn’t a poll).

I think the thing that we should be focusing on here is ‘Fun Factor’.

6v6 would allow for the ‘Fun Factor’ of the tank role to come back. As it stands now, the Tank is the single most influential character in the roster, and it can feel pretty cruddy to have to try to work around tank diff.

Counterswapping is painful, it’s a real issue, and it can’t be combatted in the 5v5 setup. You absolutely need 2 tanks to make it fun to be a tank again. This way, counterpicking isn’t such a big deal. So what if one of the 2 tanks directly counters you? You still counter their other tank, and the tank not being countered can do their job.

Granted, tanks would need to be toned down quite a bit to make this work, but I think overall this is where the game should have been from the get go, this whole single tank being the main determining factor of win/loss is just bonkers.

what you said is irrelevant,

also, these aren’t hundreds of people “looking to try it”,

these are hundreds of people who would prefer playing 6v6 over 5v5,

based on the way they present their comment, sometimes going on and writing 4+ sentence paragraph on why they hate/love the either aspects,

usually it comes down to

  • Lonelyness
  • Single person that gets blamed
  • Punching bag
  • Want to have a duo tank
  • Dislike low-skill unkillable RaidBoss gameplay
  • Too much pressure on one person
  • Never play but would love to in 6v6
  • haven’t played OW2 since change, but would come back/become one of their favourites
  • Friend duo (or in essence duo dynamic)
  • Off tank mains
  • [inserts their favourite combo]
  • Find 2 tanks way more enjoyable
  • 5v5 is the reason they hate tank now
  • Them and their friends stopped playing
  • Used to Flex but now they hate tanking
  • Used to play tank constantly, don’t play much OW2 anymore
  • Several people that just stated they loved 6v6

That’s about a rough scoop, I could go into more detail but that would be for too long.

would you express excitement over a game that changed in a way you didn’t like? suddenly, in a way nobody asked?

I made a MEME

hit the nail on the head

“Oh no, hundreds out of tens of thousands of tank players would come back if their preferred way of playing the game were to return. Better kowtow to their demands!”

“better stay on 5v5, because queue times are more important than role enjoynment”

“What? There are even less tank players, hmmm, I know, let’s buff tanks even more, that’ll fix it”

“Oh no now DPS are complaining they dont get to have fun, and sometimes Tanks are the bottleneck because they abuse Tank”

Better buff DPS, whoops now tanks are miserable again

“if we open this restaurant, we instantly require the amount of chairs and tables to fill by random peple

“otherwise we will never be successful!!!”

Anecdotally, with my friend group there are 6 of us.
That alone is something that make us all look forward to trying 6v6, because none of us played as a 6 stack.
Only one person in that group did I play with back in OW1.

That said, the one I have been playing with for years and I used to duo on tank.
Now he plays tank and I almost entirely play tank in Mystery Heroes, queueing as DPS/Support when playing QP, regardless of whether my friend has selected tank.

The others in the group, one is a pure support main who will stay that way regardless of format.
One is a support main who used to be a Zarya main.
Another is a DPS/support main who used to primarily play Rein with the Zarya main.
The last is a Hanzo main who used to also play Sigma.

So, in my group, 5/6 are comfortable playing tank in a duo-tanking context.
I’ll occasionally play tank.
One who still primarily plays tank but kind of hates it.
3 who have swapped roles because they don’t like solo tanking.

The other day the 100% support main was spectating some of our matches as a 5 stack in MH.
Our former Rein main randed Rein, I randed DVA, my tank main in OW1.
We had a blast, steamrolling through them.
She commented that she’d absolutely love to be a support with our duo tanking.
I’ve duo tanked with all of them in MH, and have enjoyed basically all combinations.
Hell, the Hanzo main can be difficult to work with, when he’s playing DPS, but when he’s randed Sigma in MH while I’ve been a tank, we synergise well.

I had no issue back in OW1, hitting flex and just accepting whatever role it gave me.
I want that back.

I mean, looking at it through Blizz’ eyes, they might care about the general health of the game as opposed to whether tanks are enjoying themselves. I hate to always bring up queue times, but they are a consideration.

its not a new restaurant bro, its a restaurant that already closed due to not enough customers. theyre attempting to reopen it but they have to exceed whatever they did last time. and many potential customers already said their goodbyes.

cuz they instead of the usual meals, they started to make more trash meals, and less variety

How’s general health of the game gonna go if nobody is going to play tank in 5v5?

Are they gonna do 4v4 next?

I think this is a pedantic way of looking at the issue. If 100 people stand up, think of the other thousands who don’t stand up?

Do you personally disagree with the 5v5 vs 6v6 debate? Do you think 5v5 is fine where it stands now? Please don’t take this as an attack towards you, it’s not meant to be, I’m just genuinely curious why you’d paraphrase in such a demeaning way?

If you find the game to be perfectly fine the way it is, I’d have to ask if you’d ever played 6v6 prior? If so, what are your takes on the 5v5 vs 6v6 debate?

Source: Trust me bro?

Thats fine, but keep in mind that people who like 5v5 dont usually come to the forums to complain or praise about it. Not to mention that the OW1 playerbase is not a concern anymore. The game works without them good enough.

Sure, people would play tank, but for how long? How dedicated are they? What is the percentage that feels the same way? How will OW2 players react when confronted with the old problems?

Keep in mind that we need to DOUBLE the tank playerbase, to not get the queue times of OW1.

Not to mention the power loss of the tank role in general when they need to nerf every single tank.

How do we get 2 tanks to play per team in 6v6? I still don’t know what format around which all these discussions revolve.

Sounds about right!

I can definitely relate to the feelings they shared. Being the only Tank on the team can be pretty stressful and a little lonely. Im excited for 6v6 RQ to return. I believe it will have a good, positive impact on OW2.

You’re missing something here.

Role enjoyment and queue times are directly correlated.
An enjoyable role can’t have a low population of players.

If tanking in OW1 was that great, why was it the least popular role?

The answer to that might be 2 things:

  1. Tanking in OW1 was indeed miserable
  2. Tanking as a role is inherently not popular.

The concept of something being niche needs to be more broadly understood.

There are things in life that are neither “good” nor “bad,” but rather different.

Well that’d increase the pool if tank players. Isn’t that a good thing?
