Latency Spikes and Spectrum ISP

I’ve been experiencing persistent and unpredictable latency spikes when connecting to Overwatch servers via Spectrum. This issue has been ongoing since around November and has become a consistent problem during gameplay, leading to rubberbanding, input delay, and even occasional disconnects.

I’ve tested multiple configurations, including direct-to-modem, but the issue persists. PingPlotter, WinMTR, and ICMP logs show large spikes contemporaneously with in-game issues. Other applications like video calls and other games occasionally suffer as well, but Overwatch is consistently affected the most — I assume because it’s more sensitive to jitter. That other hero shooter that must not be named also had some issues when I played it.

I’ve spoken to Spectrum support multiple times, but so far they’ve brushed it off or claimed the line looks fine — even when I’ve shared logs that clearly show spikes up to 900ms+ before stabilizing again.

Their twitter support is suggesting “mitigation” issues (I don’t buy it). Is there a test IP I can use? Are the old ones to the login servers still good? They’re obviously still up as I keep pinging them.

Any other suggestions for what I might do?

They are no longer publicly listed and the old IPs aren’t pointing at the game servers.

This change occurred when Blizzard stopped providing evaluation of WinMTRs/PingPlotter results and put that process back in the hands of ISPs.

If you’re seeing spikes to 900ms in the middle of any test (even outside trying to ping Overwatch servers) and then lower values right after that, those are just inflated response times on nodes that ignore ICMP requests. Most datacenters don’t allow direct pings as a DDoS protection mechanism.

Which server do you connect to most often? I’m also a Spectrum customer and play on ORD (Chicago) most of the time, but not running into this issue.

Can you run a simple WinMTR to 8.8.8.8 and post those results? You might need to break the hostnames from being links.

Did you run this test for almost an hour and a half? Ideally, you should only run it for 5–10 minutes. However, I agree with Spectrum about the mitigation because the “worst” column never starts affecting the “average” column.

Were you running a WinMTR during video calls that experienced this? The best way to track this down is to be running the test while it happens, then stop as soon as it does.

Yeah, those first few Charter hops are occasionally ignoring the request, so it’s going to show that way through the rest of the test. Every service you test will show the same results since you have to connect through your ISP.

Can you add a DxDiag here after exporting it from the tool?

The NIC driver was two years old there. I’ve gone ahead and installed the latest available from MSI. It acted like it was just repairing it so maaaaybe it’s just been corrupt this whole time. I’d previously tried to reinstall it in my troubleshooting so IDK TBH.

Okay, I noticed a few things that can affect overall performance, but probably not the issue you’re having. These things would be lack of pagefile space on the main OS drive (you want 20% free space), the Windows desktop is extended instead of duplicated (this can cause performance issues), and your GPU drivers are out of date (Driver Date/Size: 9/25/2024).

Speaking of Windows, the 24H2 update has been giving people a lot of problems in different games, some of Blizzard’s titles included.

I think it produced the same report both times. I’ve reuploaded it to see if it was just a Google thing. If that doesn’t do it, I might be willing to reinstall Windows just to see if some weird Windows BS.

I don’t think that’s necessary.

So I combed through the report and the majority of the errors, like probably 95% are from galaxyclient helper.exe. It’s crashing over and over and over. I recommend looking into that.

I don’t see anything related to the connection, or that would explain what’s happening.

Since you know the connection problem is happening to other apps and services, we’re really troubleshooting outside the scope of what this forum covers.

My only remaining suggestion is to make sure that only the ethernet connection you’re using is enabled in the Windows Network settings area. Some versions of Windows (like individual updates) like to scan through available connections, which can cause lag or disconnections.

But beyond this tip, I think you’ll need to continue troubleshooting either the individual pieces of network equipment (including your NIC) or the modem itself with the ISP.
